Ben's Café and brasserie at KLCC, Kuala Lumpur

It was hard to find a restaurant at the KLCC where we could relax and enjoy some western food. We tried out Ben's Café because it was not so crowded and the interior looked relaxing.

We choose a sandwich with chips, a hamburger with fries and a wrap. After one hour, we were ready to hit the city again. It was necessary to eat something before diner late in the evening.

Modern architecture of the Putrajaya Steel Mosque, Kuala Lumpur

The full name of this modern mosque is very difficult to remember, it is the Masjid Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin. As a tourist it is better to refer to the Steel or Iron Mosque. It is the biggest mosque of the region and has a capacity of 24.000 believers. When we visited it outside the praying times, there were less than ten people. Completely different than the Pink Mosque which is always crowded.

You feel that tourists don't come here. The entrance is free and we were accompanied by a private guide who explained the modern architecture. The mosque is only open since 2010 and for us, a true art piece of architecture.

The entrance gate is arch shaped and the ceiling supported by a maze of curved steel bars. After passing this corridor you enter the courtyard or garden. In front of you, you have the main entrance of the Steel Mosque. The praying hall is enormous and feels a bit dark. Maybe because it was cloudy outside.

The outdoor temperatures were very high but inside it was cool. How is it possible to adjust the temperature of such a big space without having a gigantic air-conditioning infrastructure? We can only conclude it is because of the brilliant design of the mosque. The metal materials are colder than wood and stone. The square construction has been built alongside the river, a bit elevated so that it receives a lot of wind. There are no walls, all sides are open from the ground level up to the very high roof. Around the praying floor, on the same level, they made a wide perimeter of cold water. The opening of the side walls is larger above the water and the wind together with the cold water temperature cool down the interior of the Steel Mosque.

This is not only a modern building but also top architecture. Kuala Lumpur is the fastest growing city in South East Asia and modern Muslim architecture is booming. The Steel Mosque is only one example of many: the Pink Mosque, the Petronas Headquarters offices and the most famous are the Petronas Twin Towers. Technology, creativity and budget seem endless.

White church Immaculate Conception, Fairbanks

During the summer, against the blue sky and in the sunlight, the little white wooden church stands out. You really feel its presents at the Chena River. During the winter when everything is covered in snow and ice, it will disappear and only the blue cape of Our Lady on the roof will be visible. We wonder why Our Lady stands on a green snake, it is the first time we see this.

The church was built in 1904 and has interesting stained glass artworks. Some show stories out of local daily life, people are dressed warmly for the winter, it snows and they sell bread on the market. We have to admire this modern work in a predominantly conservative State. The stained glass in the wooden entrance doors represent angels, the more classic interpretations of church art.

It was Father Francis Monroe who was responsible for building the first Roman Catholic Church in Alaska. In the beautiful landscaped garden with flowers beds, stands a small interpretation of the Lourdes Cave.
