Visiting the NASA John F. Kennedy Space Center, Cape Canaveral

This is the NASA site which has been used to launch all Space Shuttle flights and is also known as Cape Canaveral. The exhibitions show not only the Space Shuttle but many used unmanned rockets and jets. The most amazing part of the Space Center is the tall building where the Space Shuttle was prepared for a mission and when ready rolled out to the launch site on giant movable platforms.

The launch site is located near the sea, miles away from the maintenance building. When a launch takes place, the complete area around the launch site is evacuated. This no access zone is several square miles big. Staying in the zone would cause severe ear damage because of the laud explosions.

All visitors can try out the “Shuttle Launch Experience”. It is a launch simulator which tries to give you the feeling of being an astronaut. It was fun and looked professional. We are however sure that the real deal can not be simulated. The forces unleashed during a Space Shuttle launch must be incomparable to this family ride.

  7. I had no idea it was open to the public like this. Must be quite fascinating but I certainly wouldn't want to be cooped up in a space station situation for hours, let alone weeks on end.

  11. This is a fun and historic place to visit. I am glad you had a chance to see it while in Florida. It looks like you had a very close view of the launch site in your 8th picture. Did you still have to take a tour bus to see it close up?
