General Impressions of Fairbanks, north Alaska

Fairbanks is one of the most northern cities in the world. During the summer you have 24 hours a day light. During the winter it is dark and cold with freezing temperatures of 50 degrees below zero. While we were here it was exceptionally warm.

For European standards, this is a very small city with only 32.000 inhabitants. In Alaska it is the second largest city of the state. Alaska is pure wilderness and you also see this in Fairbanks. You have lots of green, water, wooden constructions and the old town refers back to the Gold Rush. On our way we even saw an old train wagon used as a restaurant now.

As dancers we loved to name of the local dance studio, the Elbow Room. It was indeed small and empty. Probably not many people dance here. The Fairbanks visitor center is nice, you find there a bush plane from the bishop of Alaska.

The city is trying to be appealing for tourism, has nice parks alongside the river, monuments and statues. When you see Eskimo’s, huskies and the link to Siberia, you know it is cold here during the winter.

  7. The dogs look right at home there.
Can't imagine there being light 24/7 in summer, or dark & cold in winter. I expect the people who live there know no other way..
