Liberty Falls at Chitina

Almost arriving to the deserted ghost town of Chitina, you drive by the Liberty Falls on your right side. From on the bridge you occasionally see bears walking alongside the river. We went down to get closer to the waterfalls.

There were a few young men camping here, enjoying a fisher's trip. Once a year they catch salmon, between 50 and a 100 fish, and freeze it in. According to them, only locals can apply for such a permit. They were preparing their camp fire for the evening so that they would not be surprised by wildlife.

  1. This is for sure a beautiful and rugged wilderness! Wonder if those cute little mushrooms are poisoness? They look like it! Glad you had no encounters with bears! They just love salmon.
