Stepping across the Equator line in Quito

The Equator line is at a latitude of zero degrees which a marked by the tower monument in Quito and the yellow line on the ground. We took the opportunity to have our picture taking with Kristel in the Southern Hemisphere and me in the Northern. Funny. A visit to the museum in the tower is possible and you get nice views of the surrounding mountains.

In general the seasons do not change on the Equator line, it is always warm tropical weather. That’s what we thought but we didn’t take into account that Quito is on an altitude of about 3.000 meters. This causes a drop in temperature. So we are wearing a jacket in a so called tropical latitude destination. Be well prepared.

We already passed the Equator line twice by ship, once in the Galapagos and once on a cruise from Chili to Peru. This is celebrated on board. It was our first encounter on land and probably our last.

De evenaar ligt op een hoogte van nul graden en wordt hier in Quito aangeduid door het toren monument en de gele lijn op de grond. We trokken een foto van ons beiden met Kristel in het Zuidelijk halfrond en ik in het Noordelijke. Grappig. Een bezoek aan de museumtoren is mogelijk en biedt leuke zichten over de omringende bergen.

In het algemeen veranderen de seizoenen op de evenaar niet, het is er altijd tropisch warm. Dat is wat we dachten, maar we hadden geen rekening gehouden met de hoogte van Quito, die ongeveer 3.000 meter is. Dit veroorzaakt een grote daling in temperatuur en daarom dragen we ook een jas op deze zogenaamde tropische evenaar lijn. 

We hadden reeds twee maal de evenaar overgestoken per boot. Eens op de Galapagos eilanden en ook eens op een cruise van Chili naar Peru. Dan wordt er feest gevierd aan boord. Dit was ons eerste treffen met de evenaar op land, en waarschijnlijk ons laatste.

Let the cruise games begin, crossing the equator, Ecuador

It is a tradition that crossing the equator is celebrated with a special event. On cruise ships, this is a pleasant celebration consisting of games, music and dancing. Contrary to this on long distance cargo or military training ships it is an initiation for beginning sailors. The rough sailors test the newcomers to see if they are up for a life at sea.

On the Celebrity Infinity cruise ship the officers organised pool games. The team of experienced officers (Shellbacks or sons of Neptune) took it up against the passengers (Pollywogs). There were two water competitions: synchronised water ballet and an inflated boat race in the swimming pool. The crew lost from the passengers.

The afternoon ended with the Production Dancers and Singers on the pool deck. Everyone had a great time and we never saw the pool deck so crowded.

Het is een traditie dat over de evenaar varen wordt gevierd. Op cruise schepen is dit een aangename gebeurtenis bestaande uit spelletjes, muziek en dansen. In tegenstelling tot lange afstand vrachtschepen en militaire trainingsboten waarop beginnende matrozen ontgroend worden. De harde zeebonken testen nieuwkomers om na te gaan of zij wel bestand zijn tegen het harde leven op zee.

Op de Celebrity Infinity organiseerden de Officieren waterspelen. Het team ervaren officieren (de Shellbacks of de Zonen van Neptunus) namen het op tegen de passagiers (de Pollywogs). Er vonden twee waterspelen plaats: gesynchroniseerd waterballet en opblaasboot racen in het zwembad. De bemanning verloor van de passagiers. 

Men sloot de namiddag af met een optreden van de productiedansers en zangers. Iedereen genoot er van en we zagen het zwembaddek nog nooit zo vol.
