Riding in the Maglev train of Shanghai at 431km per hour

This magnetic Maglev train is the fastest commercial train in the world with its top speed of 431 km per hour. It was built together with Siemens and the elevated monorail tracks cover a length of 30 km. There are two train stations, one in the financial heart of Pudong and the other one at Shanghai Airport.

Munich was also considering such a Maglev project between the airport and the city centre but it was too expensive. The costs in Shanghai were above 43 million dollar per km of track and that was ten years ago.

We were expecting a train ride like in a rollercoaster with a fast acceleration but it was a smooth transition, you didn't feel the increasing speed. Looking out the window was something else, the speed was quiet frightening. In the middle of the track both trains slowed down to about 300 km per hour, allowing them the pass each other in a safe way. The moment they cross each other, you hear a loud bang and the window shakes. It goes so fast that you don't even see the passing train, only a light flash.

Our journey from Brussels to London with the Eurostar and Eurotunnel

The Eurotunnel connecting France with the United Kingdom under the North Sea is an incredible piece of architecture and technology. The high speed train Eurostar departs from Brussels and after 25 minutes you are in Lille to pick up the last passengers. It is fun to drive through the French country side expecting to see the first glimpse of the sea.

It was however not the case, the train slows down and for a long distance you have on both sides of the tracks high fences with barbwire. This is to stop people without papers crossing the border to the UK via the tunnel, not to mention how dangerous it could be. 70 minutes after our departure in Brussels, the train dives into the Eurotunnel.

After 20 minutes of darkness, we see the first light on the UK side. Strange to know we were under the sea. After a comfortable ride, the train arrives on time in St. Pancras International train station London. The total journey took about 2 hours. An excellent alternative for Europeans who don't like to fly. Before making my way to the hotel, I have a closer look at the St. Pancras station.

Coming back from London in Business Premier Class, I receive a dinner menu from Mr. Raymond Blanc, the Culinary Director of Eurostar and also Two Michelin Star Chef of restaurant "Le Manoir". The document informs me that he works with traditional dishes and a fresh and creative approach. I almost didn't touch the food and it was below the level of a low quality restaurant. It is surprising that a two Star Michelin Chef associates his name to such quality. Is this only about financial gain? Because of this opportunism, I am never going to visit his restaurant.
