Medicine and modernism together at Sant Pau hospital, Barcelona

This hospital is a master piece of modernism architecture. It was completed in 1930 and one of the leading medical research centers of the world. You really see and feel the influence of Gaudi, realised by architect Montaner.

The individual buildings are amazing pieces of art. Every roof, wall and dome has a multitude of decorations. The facilities were connected with each other via underground tunnels so that medical staff could move quickly from one building to another. This building layout is still being used in today's hospitals.

To us, this is one of the best architectural treasures you can visit in Barcelona.

Casa Vicens, one of Gaudi's first big projects, Barcelona

You find this privately owned house called Casa Vicens in the Gràcia district. We like Gaudi's work but did not visit this house before. Since the owner lives here, you cannot enter the building but the facade alone provides many picture opportunities. It is the first time we encounter a privately owned building registered on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Its value is currently estimated above 30 million euros.

The main elements of Gaudi's style are found back in the facade. He worked with mosaics, many colored stones and titles, and used Moorish elements. His imagination knew no limits but was very labor intensive. Today we would think twice before starting such a project but Barcelona still takes on this challenge with the construction of the Sagrada Familia.

Building Anotni Gaudi's Sagrada Familia, Barcelona

The Sagrada Familia must be the most famous building of Barcelona and it is not even completed yet. Antoni Gaudi started working on it in 1910 and spent the last 16 years of his life living in poverty trying to work on this church.

Gaudi got killed into an accident very close to the church. At first, when they found his body, they did not recognise him and assumed it was a homeless person. The aim is to complete the church in 2026, hundred years after the death of Gaudi. We think this is impossible, the construction works progress very slowly. The main reason for this is budget. The Sagrada Familia is funded via donations and entry fees.

Compared to a few years ago, we almost see no difference to the exterior. Some parts are newly built and clean. Most of the facade is already black because of pollution. The sculptures are the most impressive elements of the church in this phase. Once completed it should be the main tower, representing Jesus with a height of almost 200 metres.
