The exterior of the cathedral of Sevilla with its crocodile

Sevilla is a fantastic city and this cathedral built in the 15th century is unique: it is the biggest Gothic construction in the world, it has an inner court full of orange trees, it is partially erected in western and Muslim architecture and houses a crocodile.

What a crocodile? Why? Well it is a bit linked to the Muslim architecture. Sevilla was from the 8th till the 12th century occupied by Arabs from northern Africa, from there the partial Muslim architecture and also the links between Spain and Muslim countries. In the 12th century the Emir of Egypt gave Sevilla a life crocodile and when it died, its body was mounted and hung at the ceiling of the cathedral entrance. Because its body decomposed over time it was replaced by a wooden replica. If this is not unique, we don’t know.

The 105 metres high tower with its carillon is unbelievable. On the top stands a half naked woman who turns with the wind. In Belgium this is most of the time a rooster but I to prefer the statue of a lady. Would they try to tell us a message? Are ladies turning with the wind and regularly change their opinion? Probably not, my imagination is in overdrive again.

We were impressed with the level of details: towers, roof decorations, shields, statues and above all the story in the last picture. Jesus together with a Muslim community at the Arabic entrance of the garden.

  4. An amazing intricate structure. It was very hot when we were there. I don't remember seeing the crocodile. Now the lady is not changing her opinion often she is showing men where to go as they often need directions.
