Plaza Sotomayor and the Naval Headquarters, Valparaiso

This square is one of the landmarks of Valparaiso with buildings of the Port Authorities and the Naval Headquarters. The Navy building is called Armada de Chile, which in facts means navy. It is about 100 years old and contains blue and grey marble. The decorations make this an exceptional building which has a dominant place on Plaza Sotomayor.

In the middle of the square you find a monument for the Navy Captain Artura Prat, who died in the naval Battle of Iquique. His ship the Esmeralda was sunk by the Peruvians. He is one of the most commemorated heroes of Chile with statues, ships, squares, streets, universities and even his portrait is printed on Chilean bank notes. Below his statue you see the ethernal flame burning.

  2. Usually our eternal flames are in graveyards, I have never seen one right in town on cement. Everyone can see it this way and it is appropriate. This is surely a mixture of new and very old buildings!
