The gold cathedral of Quito

The cathedral is the most important church of the capital. We received a guided tour but could not take pictures inside. Security guards were strictly enforcing this rule. The exterior of the church is very dark and polluted because of traffic passing by.

Why do we report on this monument? Because of its gold. The church interior is fully covered with gold. It is probably the only church in the world that contains this volume. Nobody can tell how many tons are present but enough to pay of the full debt of the country. This richness of the church is in big contradiction with the poverty in Quito, still people remain faithful to the church and keep on donating.

  1. I love that door. I think it is not right to have so much gold there when the money from it could be used to pay debt or feed hungry people. Jesus was all about living simply and not money.

  4. Zeer mooie detailfoto's!
