The ambience in the streets of Antwerp during the summer

Walking around the statue of Brabo on the Main Square is ideal to cool down. In the background you see the Cathedral. The streets are lively, the ambience is top, many people enjoy the last sunshine, the summer was ending.

Tour trams drive tourists around this multi cultural city. From the docks, I could take a picture of the graffiti together with a historical building. But also in the middle of the Meir, you find some graffiti but in this case it was vandalism. At the Central Station, one of the most beautiful of the world, there stood a giant Ferris wheel. Antwerp is recognised as fashion metro pole and this is clearly visible in the shops.

Op een warme zomerdag koelen mensen wat af door rond het standbeeld van Brabo te wandelen op de Grote Markt. Op de achtergrond zie je de kathedraal. De stad is vol leven, de sfeer is top en vele mensen proberen nog de laatste zonnestralen mee te pikken. 

Gekleurde trammen (busjes) rijden toeristen rond in deze multi culturele stad. Van op de kaaien neem ik een foto van graffitikunst in combinatie met een historisch gebouw. Maar ook op de Meir vind je graffiti, dit keer is het echter vandalisme. Aan het Centraal Station, één van de mooiste van de wereld, stond een reuzenrad. Antwerpen is wereldwijd erkend als een modestad en dit is te zien in de winkels..

Main square Antwerp, Grote markt Antwerpen

The main square of Antwerp is rather small but has many guild houses from the 16th century, most of them having a restaurant on the ground floor. In the first picture you can see the Cathedral of our lady in the background. The city hall is very special and was build between 1561 and 1565 in a Renaissance style with Italian and Flemish influence.

In front of the City Hall you see the statue of Brabo throwing away the hand of the giant Antigoon who forced everyone who wanted to cross the Schelde to pay a toll fee. Brabo stopped the giant by cutting of his hand. The city was named according to this legend, Antwerpen (Ant = hand, werpen = throwing).

De grote markt van Antwerpen is nogal klein maar met vele ambachtshuizen uit de 16de eeuw, waarvan in de meeste een restaurant wordt uitgebaat. Op de eerste foto kan je de OLV kathedraal op de achtergrond zien. Het stadhuis werd gebouwd tussen 1561 en 1565 in de Renaissance stijl met Italiaanse en Vlaamse invloeden.

Voor het stadhuis zie je het beeld van Brabo die de hand van de reus Antigoon in de schelde gooit. Brabo heeft zijn hand afgehakt waarbij hij een eind maakte aan de verplichte tol voor iedereen die de Schelde wou oversteken. De naam van de stad komt voor uit deze legende.
