Amazing salmon and fresh products at Gamla Saluhallen, Helsinki

The Gamla Saluhallen is the first covered market area of Finland. It was built in 1889 and looks a bit run down from the outside. We nearly missed this interesting building. We saw a cruise ship of Siversea in the port and from that pier we could take a better picture. It started raining and we looked for shelter in this covered market hall. This was a nice surprise. Most shops had a classy wooden stand and all products seemed to be of high quality. We were impressed with the seafood. Salmon was available in all kinds of sizes and preparations, marinated, with herbs, with pepper, smoked… All merchants were offering fresh products and at some stands you could have a sample while enjoying a drink. We found it funny that they also had Deer Kebab, something we had never seen before.

  7. Seeing the word Reindeer makes me a bit sad, (I don't really care for the taste of it) Americans never mark it as Reindeer but it is at any rate! This market is so pleasing to my eyes! I'd find lots of tasty things to bring home from here! Except, you guessed it no Reindeer! :)

  15. This place reminds me of the stores inside Quincy Market in Boston. The deer kebab looks big enough for several people to eat.
