The Holmens Kirke or the church of Holmen in Copenhagen

This church received its name because it was built in 1619 alongside the Holmens Kanal. Like many Lutheran churches it is rather sober. We particularly liked the wooden benches behind closed doors so that the visitors are a bit locked in during the mass. Similar to many churches in Scandinavia you see a boat hanging at the ceiling to pray for the men at sea. The baptismal bath was small but a real piece of art.

  16. So many intricate carvings inside. I did not know about the ships hanging from the ceiling, but it makes sense because the sea is their livelihood.

  17. I love the angle of the church that you got through the tree. Very nice composition. Also find it very fascinating that a boat is hanging from the ceiling. What a powerful reminder to remember men at sea. Fascinating church, even though you cannot leave during the mass.
