Red telephone booths and busses at Charing Cross Station, London

London is a modern city but it stubbornly holds on to traditions. In a time era where everyone has mobile phones, you still see the red telephone booth in the street. At Charing Cross Station they even have four in a row, I wonder if they are ever used at the same time? Or is this just nostalgic?

Before entering the train and tube station, I take a picture of a taxi which is camouflaged as the Union Jack. At this place, you see the most crazy colours and drawings on taxis, double deck busses pass by every few minutes.

In front of Charing Cross Station on Strand street, you see the Eleanor Cross which is a replica of the Whitehall cross, a type of marking point to calculate the distance to London. It is a very good location because Trafalgar Square and Charing Cross Station are right in the heart of the city centre.

The station has a nice hotel and a beautiful glass roof. In the hall you can access the train platforms or select one of the two underground metro lines of the tube. The available tube lines are Northern and Bakerloo. Public transport is very easy and well indicated.

  1. You are right, the English are known for hanging on to tradition, but hey, makes it fun for the rest of us to visit! LOL I think a stakeout at the phone booths to see if they ever are used would be interesting.

Maybe the London people do not have a Nokia or iPhone :) though I love those red telephone booths - amd funny taxies, and of course their busses, too.

  10. Oh just seeing all these pictures of London really makes me want to get back over there! I like those red telephone booths too, we took some pictures of us in them, because to us they are a big deal! There is a family across the farmer's field that has one at the end of their driveway! No working phone, but the booth is still neat to see!

  11. Those phone boxes do stand out and look lovely. Brighten up the place. We used to have the same here long ago, all gone now in this city.

  18. It's so cool seeing red telephone boxes all over the UK. Though the cities are undeniably modernised, when you look further, there are still a lot of stuff that evokes nostalgia. Thanks for this post!
