What are the top tourist attractions of London for a day trip?

What is a top attraction? For each person this could be different. So I am focussing on my own top 7 which is most likely interesting for most tourists. These sites are also the most famous ones except for the Shard, an 87 floor pyramid construction which is the highest building In Europe. Looking at modern architecture, I also added the London Eye to my top attractions list. This giant Ferris Wheel at the Thames colours blue in the evening and provides excellent views over the city.

To complete my top 7, I am adding 5 classical monuments that almost everybody knows. Maybe that's why they are in the top list, everybody wants to see them. Here we go: Buckingham Palace, the Tower Bridge, the Big Ben, Westminster Abbey and the Tower of London.

When you visit London for the first time, I would recommend you to visit all the 7 attractions in one day. During the summer period this is possible. Take into account that you spend a lot of time in the museums of the Tower. Enjoy your day trip and see the best of London.

  3. I really agree with your picks, and they are pretty much exactly what we saw, on our last trip there with a few more highlights. Kensington Palace was wonderful too, and we stayed not too far from it, and walked and walked all around from there to Buckingham Palace, but also the great pickle! Gherkin building! My daughter had one of her college interns in London and she always liked keeping the Gherkin building in her sights, and she would never get lost, or so she said! Thanks for posting these lovely photos! I shall go through them once more now!

  4. Of all your pictures, I think I like the first one of Big Ben, and the first one of the tower bridge with the boat. Now, what is in The Shard, office buildings? And why do they call it that? I think I will Google it, I have never heard of it, it is fascinating!
