The commercialisation of God, Maria and religion, Scherpenheuvel

The modern world is commercial, this is a fact. With money, you can buy a lot. Not everything but enough. The priests and regilieus people have also seen an opportunity. Sometimes you have to pay a fee to enter a church and we thought that the House of God was open for everyone. In the Notre-Dame of Paris they have a real store inside the Cathedral. In the Church of the Holy Selpuchre of Jeruzalem, priests sell services on the tomb of Jesus. Here in Scherpenheuvel we saw a special store with statues of Maria, Jesus, Jozef, priests, angels, candles and many more. We think this is a special store that only a few of you have seen.

  1. There is something ironic and not quite right about selling religious icons next to pin wheels and ads for soda!

  2. I suppose the people that buy statues find them a help in their worship of God.

  3. If I ever make it to this quaint village, you can be sure I will not be stopping at the tourist shops! :S

  5. Oh my, church stores, I don't know what to make of this!!! We have a Jewish Synagogue that has things for sale in the foyer, like dreidels, paintings, and candles, things with Jewish history. And we have Christian book and gift stores, there is a chain of them. But they are not connected with any particular church. In your church gift shops I see items that are not really of any religious significance!!! Like in a regular store or a toy store.

Filip, zu deiner Frage: "did do increase the brightness of the colours?"..
Nein...meine Fotos sind original. Ich verwende keine Textur oder andere Fotoprogramme...

  10. I was going to write the same thing as Barb.. I thought there's something not quite right with all the mix but well, if someone's coming to get a religious icon then there's all that they'll care about I think..
