The new style and kitchen of Restaurant Belle Epoque, Middelkerke

It is hard for restaurants to survive at the Belgian coast. During the holiday season everyone gets enough customers but during the winter and off season you just have too many restaurants for the availabe demand. We tried restaurant Belle Epoque a few times and most tables were empty. The food was at fair prices and of average quality. You have to jump out if you want to run a restaurant off season.

We assume that for this reason, the Belle Epoque paritcipated in the Belgian version of Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmare, or the “Chef in Nood”. The restaurant was certainly not a nightmare but needed some support. Two Star Michelin Chef Stéphane Buyens of the “Hostellerie Le Fox” is the VTM - TV coach trying to improve the business of restaurants in need. We must admit that the restaurant has improved a lot; the interior of this splendid house with seaview now displays a touch of class. The restaurant has a new small card and focusses on fresh sea products. The quality of the dishes is very good. We certainly can recommend this restaurant and wish the owners a lot of success.

  1. Your photos are making me oh so hungry! What a charming place to visit, from the first sight of the outside to venturing inside. I promised myself that I will one day walk about our downtown area and snap some photos (they will not even begin to compare) to the photos you take. Too much chrome and glass and metal, as they seem to plow down the old and build new around here, far too often. Enjoy your weekend.

  4. Oei, dat is niet mijn smaak. Alleen de zeetong trekt me aan. Alle kleine vissoorten zijn niet mijn ding. Gelukkig vonden jullie het smakelijk.

  7. Seems like lots of competition during the winter. I imagine it is hard to maintain quality and still make money when there is little customers. But from your pictures, everything looks delicious.
