Giant statues and take away sushi at the Central Station of Helsinki

When approaching the Central Station from the side, you immediately see the special clock tower with its green dome. It reminds me a bit of the Art Deco style of the Basilic of Koekelberg in Belgium. Very different is the front entrance where giant statues hold a light ball. The interior is sober and there are a few places where you can eat a snack. The train platforms are covered by a glass metal construction. We had to eat something small so a take away sushi was the best option. We enjoyed it so much that we took two boxes.

  3. Eliel Saarinen had designed the station and those statues who carries the light balls are designed by Emil Wikström. You can also take a train to Moscow and St.Petersburgh from there.

  5. That sushi looks pretty good for the train station. Love all of the trains in your part of the world. Makes travel so much easier. Very interesting contrasts between the front and back of this station.

  8. Railway Stations often seem to be a strange mixture of styles in architecture and this one certainly seems to be.

  9. indeed its funny that the interior does not fir the exterior design of this amazing building, I have been already there myself-I took once the train from Helsinki to visit my friends who live 5h up north from the capital, was a lovely winter trip:)

  12. Your sushi looks good. I wonder how it taste from a train station. Also, do you know if the giant statues are holding a ball lamp? Maybe it lights up at night.
