The Uspenski Cathedral with its altar of icons, Helsinki

This Orthodox church called Uspenski Cathedral is a large and young church which was completed in 1868. The Russian influence is clearly visible via small domes and towers on top of the church. The Uspenski cathedral is located on a hill near the harbour of Helsinki. The church is famous for its icons which are on display for the public, some on an individual basis but mainly integrated in an altar wall. Visitors are not allowed to come close to the altar. A very interesting church with icons, wall paintings and an inner dome.

  4. Very lovely and artistic spot. Would have never guessed that this was not an older church ( of course in the US, that would be very old) Lovely shots!

  7. Religious buildings have to be some of the most beautiful designs around the world. Religious or not, they are always worth checking out whichever country you're in.

  16. You found another beautiful building to photograph. I really like the reddish color exterior. The altar is quite spacious and well-lit for ceremonies.
