Mental strength in Ballroom Dancing, Smiley and Angel

This week we danced two competitions in the German Open Championships in Stuttgart. It is the best appreciated tournament in the world and the statistics speak for themselves, 5.100 couples from 57 countries have registered. Almost all WDSF top ranked couples in Ballroom Dancing for amateurs and professionals are here in Stuttgart. Let the dancing begin.

Our first competition was the Senior I A Standard with 53 couples participating. We didn’t dance to the best of our ability and end the competition in place 40 leaving couples behind us from Canada, South Africa, Germany, France, Finland and Russia. We were disappointed not to reach the second round.

The next day it would even be harder in the Open World Ranking, adding the top 50 couples in the world. During the warming-up we felt pressured and had too much stress, we were very critical on everything we put on the floor. Angry about our performance of the previous day made us start the main competition in a poor mental state. Our dancing was however much better. In total 156 couples participated and we end in place 122, leaving couples behind us from Russia, Germany, China, Italy, South Africa, Finland, Austria and The Netherlands. Again a big disappointment and we need to reflect on how to improve our dancing.

We are very conscious that technique is important but realized this week that our mental strength is blocking us from achieving results. We both have our mental weaknesses and it is very difficult not to be affected by this. From today onwards we will work as hard on our mental approach as on technique. Our philosophy will be “Smiley and Angel”. Many of you will think, what is this for crap? Well, let me explain.

Internally, I (Filip) am energetic, powerful and very critical. These combinations lead to frustration, never being happy about practice sessions and this causes many fights with Kristel. Most of the time we end our training sessions unhappy with the performance and the way we interact with each other. My (Filip) commitment will be “Smiley”, stop being critical, be happy, enjoy dancing in practice sessions and on the competition floor. Search for the right balance between dance quality and energy with the focus on cleanness and enjoyment. It will be though but I am looking forward to a positive mental approach, SMILEY!

Kristel is even more energetic, her drive and energy still boost her where she needs to wait, slow down, use the music to express the right feeling and emotion. She needs to let go, give in to the music and stay calm “Angel”. It is hard to listen, to let your head rest, lay it down on the pillow of sound while slowly ending the phrasing in music to add energy at the right moment without destroying the softness and sweetness, “ANGEL”.

Well we identified our new mental goals and will try to embody the personalities of “Smiley” and “Angel”. A story from the lessons learned on the competition floor of the German Open Championships 2014.

Laten we dit even verduidelijken.

  2. You are RIGHT!!! On the dancing show we watch, the judges are hard and pick out every little thing. But they always advise to remember that you dance for fun because you love it. Worry and stress never make for wins. Just think it is the two of you loving what you are doing and have fun. Dance only for yourselves. This is what the judges say.

  3. Thank you for writing. You were very open and honest.
In your dance level all must be the same, both physical and spiritual side.
And waiting for a companion when both might internalize learnings in a different time.
Let's not forget that dancing is fun. I'm thinking of you and your dancing!

  5. Sorry to hear how disappointed you are with the results but they don't sound too bad to me. Just to get into those competitions must need a very high standard. As you say , you need not only physical and technical ability but a strong positive mental state swell. Maybe you just need to relax and enjoy yourselves and not worry about the results and then it will happen.

  8. Smiley and Angel? Well, I understand the change that you're hoping will occur. I get nervous just reading about your competitions - I can't imagine the stress of dancing. It's no good feeling disappointed in each other. The dancing is not worth the fighting! Good Luck - keep dancing (calmly, with happiness and energy).

Lieve groeten, Dietmut
