Historical Landmark in Miami, Villa Vizcaya and gardens

The Vizcaya villa has been built for Mr. James Deering in 1910. The mansion was designed based on models of European palaces and gardens. More than 1.000 people were employed in the construction phase. The villa is beautiful but our preference goes out to the Italian Renaissance gardens. They are very green because of the tropical climate and have sculptured bushes.

The mansion is no longer a residence but a museum. It is unfortunate that the villa needs more maintenance and refurbishment than what the local government is willing to invest. A real pity because Miami or a young country like the USA doesn’t have that many historical landmarks. We find this strange since President Reagan has used this villa for international diplomatic conferences.

Can you reach Vizcaya by public transport? Yes, Vizcaya is located in the Coconut Grove district and has his own Metrorail station.

De Vizcaya villa werd gebouwd voor Dhr. James Deering in 1910.

  11. It is always interesting to me seeing US "historical places" which are all so "young", and sadly, often not very well maintained as you mentioned. I think that is sad, as it is the history of the country.
