Exploring the historical capital of St. Kitts, Basseterre

First we need to find money, we had spent almost all our dollars on a private tour and we had to look for a bank. That was the easy part, at the clock tower of Circus, a small version of Piccadilly Circus in London, we enter a bank. At the cash dispenser we take out some dollars. What is this? These are St. Kitts dollars and we were expecting US dollars. After showing several id's, driver licences and signing multiple forms we finally get the currency we requested. On our way to the city now.

Basseterre is in fact a collection of historical wooden houses, behind port Zanté you have a large shopping centre. The shops offer different kinds of souvenirs and the pirate theme is again popular. We liked the Bay Road, the flowers in the city and the Wesley Methodist church.

Eerst moeten we wat geld afhalen want we hebben bijna alles opgemaakt aan onze privé tour. Aan het Circus, een kleine versie van Piccadilly Circus in London, vonden we een bank. Even de dollars pinnen in klaar is Cees. Wat krijgen we nu? Dit zijn St. Kitts dollars in plaats van de gewenste Amerikaanse. Na het tonen van verschillende identiteitsbewijzen, rijbewijs en het tekenen van allerlei documenten, krijgen we ons geld. We zijn klaar om de stad te verkennen. 

Net achter het monument van Port Zanté ligt een leuk winkelgebied, hier vind je allerlei souvenirs en het piraten thema wordt weer volop gebruikt. De stad Basseterre is in feite een verzameling van oudere houten huisjes, de Bay Road is mooi, de Methodist church ook en je ziet er vele bloemen..

Co-Cathedral Immaculate Conception, Basseterre, St. Kitts

This cathedral is located right in front of Independence Square one of the park areas of Basseterre. It is the first time we hear of the concept Co-Cathedral. Why is that? It means that two churches are linked and together and they represent one cathedral district. Where is than the other Co-cathedral? Well it is located in St. John's, the capital of Antigua.

The exterior of the 400 year old church looks strong and it probably is because it survived this long in a territory of hurricanes. The church garden is amazing, you see many flowers but above all, an incredible palm tree in front of the church tower. The interior of the church is simple but behind the altar you find three beautiful stained glass art pieces. They are integrated into the tick walls and the deepness provides a quality impression of light.

De kathedraal is gelegen aan Independence Square, een park in het stadscentrum van Basseterre. Dit is de eerste keer dat we van het concept CO-kathedraal horen. Wat is het? Twee kerken zijn in geest met elkaar verbonden en samen vertegenwoordigen ze een religieus gebied. Waar staat dan de andere CO-kathedraal? Op een ander Caraïbisch eiland Antigua, in de hoofdstad St. John's. 

De buitenkant van deze 400 jaar oude kerk lijkt robuust en dat is het waarschijnlijk ook na zolang te overleven in een gebied geteisterd door orkanen. De kerktuin is mooi met vele bloemen, maar de palmboom in de vorm van een waaier is uitzonderlijk. De binnenkant van de kerk in eenvoudig en sober, achter het altaar vind je drie unieke glasramen. Ze zijn verwerkt in diepe nissen van de achtermuur. Dit geeft een betoverend lichteffect..
