Choosing death over slavery by the Romans, the fortress of Masada

After the fall of Jerusalem in the year 70, a thousand Jews escaped via the Judean dessert followed by the 3.000 Roman soldiers who tried to capture them as slaves. They found the 400 metre high hill of Masada on which the remains of the palace of King Herod stood. In building this palace, many workers died by falling from the cliffs. For this it is known as place of the flying slaves. Via a narrow and steep path the Jews reached the top and closed all passages for the Roman soldiers. This fortress was designed to survive a long period and there was enough water and food supplies. All attacks from the Romans failed until after three years of occupation they could build a ramp on the other side of the hill. The leader of the Jews, Eleazar ben Yair, discussed the situation with the elderly and they decided it was better to die than to be slaves. All men killed their families and by means of a draw, ten men killed all the remaining people of the community. At the end the last one fell on his own sword. In the morning when the Romans conquered the hill, they only found silence and death. Each year these events are remembered by Israel and Jewish soldiers walk through the dessert, climb the hill of Masada and swear an ode that Jews will never be slaves again.

The Tomb of Jesus and the Resurrection, Church of the Holy Selpuchre

Last travel article (13) related to the important historical places in the “Life of Jesus”.

In the heart of the Church of the Holy Selpuchre, you find the tomb of Jesus. This is the 14th and last station of the Via Dolorosa. The tomb itself is located in the centre of the church and underneath an amazing dome with sun light coming through a hole in the ceiling. Around the tomb they built a chapel which is managed by Greek Orthodox and Armenians Priests. The cues to enter are very long and even here in the holiest place of Christianity, the Priests are trying to sell articles and have turned this into a commercial activity. Even inside the chapel, two feet away from were Jesus had his resting place. When Jesus visited the Temple of David, he found that commercial activities together with religion were inappropriate. It is a pity that these Priests don't respect this. Above his last resting place, there is a painting of the Resurrection. Inside the chapel we were not allowed to take pictures. Will Jesus also be the Messiah of the Jews and Muslims? Will he return via the Golden Gate to the Temple Mount? Maybe time will tell.

The Dead Sea is the only sea in the world where you can not dive.

The Dead Sea is located in the south of Israel and is know by many people because this is the place where you can float without knowing how to swim. Due to the high salt level in the water people can not sink. It is unbelievable but true as you can see in our pictures, we both float even with our hands and feet in the air at the same time. What many don't know is that this is also the lowest point on earth, it is 393m below the official sea-level. Being surrounded by mountains, it is hard to imagine this. Mountains above water but below sea-level. The Dutch think they have a low country but the is a different ball game. It is called the Dead Sea because there is almost no live possible, so don't drink the water it is dangerous. On the beach there are plates informing you that swimming is dangerous because of the high salt level, you have to make sure you don't drink the water or get it into your eyes. After our floating experience we enjoyed a real swim in the pool of the beach resort. The outside pool is covered with cloth because the shade temperatures rise here above 40 degrees.

The Stone of Unction in the church of the Holy Sepulchre

Travel article Nr. 12 related to the important historical places in the “Life of Jesus”.

In the church you see a replica of the Stone of Unction on which Jesus was laid down after his death in the presence of Mary. The body was cleaned with a sort of oil. This is the 13th station of the Via Dolorosa. The wall paintings in the church are displaying these events from the moment he is taken down from the cross. Many Christians touch the beautiful stone which is a symbol of the preparation process of the body of Jesus before he is taken to his tomb.

Passing through the Judean dessert with many surprises

On our way from Jerusalem to Masada we had to go through the Judean dessert. We did not get bored; the mountain ranges were steep and high. We had some stops on the way where we could shoot picture of flowers and the rough landscape of the dessert. The bus passed rather close to rock formations and deep canyons. We also saw a group of camels. The landscape was sometime yellow, brown and grey. On our left side we saw the Dead Sea a place we were going to relax in the afternoon. Half way in the direction of Masada we were stopped by a military post for a security check. The Israelis do these checks in the dessert to avoid attacks from Jordan which is just on the other side of the Dead Sea.

Touching the rock on which Jesus died, the church of the Holy Sepulchre

Travel article Nr. 11 related to the important historical places in the “Life of Jesus”.

In this article we are describing stations 10 to 12 of the Via Dolorosa: Jesus is stripped of his clothing, he is nailed to the cross, and he dies in front of the eyes of his mother. The cross was erected between two rocks where the blood of Jesus fell on; this is the place visitors want to see and to be near. The rock is inside the church and surrounded by a chapel you can enter via the first floor. Here it is very crowded and people have to wait to approach the site. If the chapel is not full with visitors you have an opportunity to touch the rock where Jesus was crucified. Underneath the altar, there is a hole through which you can put your arm to touch the rock. By doing this, we touched the rock where Jesus died, and in Bethlehem the place where Jesus was born. It was a very special experience.

The oldest church in the world, the church of The Holy Sepulchre, Jerusalem

This is really the oldest church in the world, it originates from the year 326, and it is almost 1.700 years old. The church is built on the hill of Golgotha where Jesus was crucified, buried and resurrected. Stations 10 to 14 of the Via Dolorosa are located in the church. We will come back on that later. There are many Christian streams and in the church you find a Greek Orthodox, Armenian and Roman Catholic part. All these different styles in one church is very unique. For us this church has touched us the most because of the historical events and different styles. This is not just a statement. because we have already visited more than a hundred churches.

Hierop komen we later terug.
