Celebrating two birthdays at Restaurant Arenberg, Heverlee

It was the first time we visited restaurant Arenberg with our grandparents and parents together. There was also a special occasion for this event. Greta Vandensande celebrated her 60 anniversary and her father Robert became 85. We start with some pictures of the family.

Restaurant Arenberg is a one star Michelin restaurant and we have been here a few times. They offer a great lunch package in which you can choose between 3 starters, 3 main courses and 4 desserts. We tried several dishes and they were all top quality.

Restaurant Arenberg has currently the exclusive right to serve a newly developed fish from the University of Leuven, called the Omegabas. The Chef prepared a Ceviche of Omegabas which was excellent. Some at our table tried the salad with roasted pork neck.

Together we tried all main courses, the young duck, the Lomo of Duroc Batallé and the seabream. As dessert we took the classic Dame Blanche and for the birthday boy of 85 years old, a soup of strawberries and pomegranate. It was a great afternoon and we are very pleased with the family pictures.

Het was de eerste keer dat we samen met onze ouders en grootouders Restaurant Arenberg bezochten. Het was dan ook een speciale gelegenheid. Greta Vandensande vierde haar 60ste verjaardag en haar vader Robert werd 85. We starten met enkele foto's van de familie.

Restaurant Arenberg is de trotse eigenaar van één Michelin Ster en het is genieten bij elk bezoek. Ze bieden een zeer goede lunch formule aan met keuze uit 3 voorgerechten, 3 hoofdgerechten en 4 desserts. We probeerden verschillende schotels en alles was van top kwaliteit.

Op dit moment hebben zij het exclusieve recht Omegabaars te serveren. Het is een nieuwe vissoort ontwikkeld door de Leuvense Universiteit. De Chef combineerde de Omegabaars met een uitstekende Ceviche. Enkelen van ons kozen voor de salade met geroosterde varkensnek. 

Samen probeerden we alle hoofdgerechten: de jonge eend, de Lomo of Duroc Batallé varken en de zeebrasem. Als dessert nam iedereen de Dame Blanche behalve de jarigen die een soepje van aardbeien en granaatappel kozen. Het was een prachtige namiddag en we zijn zeer tevreden met de familiefoto's.

The last Christmas lights of Leuven by night

The New Year has started and soon all Christmas light will disappear again. We decided to take a walk through the city of Leuven a take a few pictures of decorated buildings and squares. It was a cold evening and carrying a metal tripod without gloves is very uncomfortable. All our pictures were taken with a shot delay and an opening speed of 6 seconds. Impossible to do without the tripod and we were pleased with the results.

On the pictures you see: the "Oude Markt", the "City Hall and St. Peter Church", "Rector de Somerplein" with the crystal Cinderella shoe, the "University Library" and the area around the train station.

Het nieuwe jaar is begonnen en snel zal alle feestverlichting uit het stadsbeeld verdwijnen. We besloten een nachtwandeling te maken door Leuven en foto's te trekken van versierde gebouwen en pleinen. Het was heel koud die avond en het dragen van de metalen driepoot zonder handschoenen was een uitdaging. Alle foto's werden genomen met een vertraging en een lens openingstijd van 6 seconden. Iets wat onmogelijk zou zijn zonder de driepikkel en we waren zeer tevreden met de resultaten. 

Op de foto's zie je: de Oude Markt, het stadhuis, de St. Pieterskerk, het Rector de Somerplein met de kristallen schoen van Assepoester, de beroemde Leuvense Universiteitsbibliotheek en het gebied rond het trein station.

An evening at the carnival fair in Leuven

We like taking evening pictures of spectacular objects and where do you find a better place then at a carnival fair. We tried to add a mixture of thrill rides and family attractions. Although that very young kids nowadays also like high speed machines. Our favourite pictures are of the giant Ferris wheel and Extazy.

We were at the carnival fair together with Kristel's parents. While taking a few pictures group teenagers made my shots a lot more interesting. Isn't it nice to have so much fun.

We houden van avondfoto's te nemen van spectaculaire objecten en waar vind je dit meer dan op een kermis. We publiceerden een mengelmoes van snelle molens en familie attracties. Alhoewel kinderen nu ook van snelle machines houden. Onze favoriete foto's zijn van het reuzenrad en de Extazy. 

We gingen samen met de ouders van Kristel naar de kermis. Terwijl ik enkele foto's van de familie nam kwamen tieners mijn shots wat opvrolijken. Is het niet leuk zoveel plezier te maken?

Mixed feelings of restaurant Zarza in the Bondgenotenlaan Leuven

We have been twice to restaurant Zarza in Leuven. The restaurant is located in the Bondgenotenlaan, one of the main shopping streets of Leuven. The stylish mansion gives a warm feeling to its visitors, you enter the main dining room and are impressed. After our first visit we were very pleased, a good menu at reasonable prices. The wine pairing was good.

Our second visit was disappointing, they worked with mediocre products and the portion of beef tartar was too small. If the Chef blows you away with the taste and his creativity, we don’t mind small portions, we go for the experience. But if you get a small portion which doesn’t jump out, the card house collapses fast. Maybe they deserve a third chance but they are far away from Michelin Star quality and the prices are rather high.

We zijn reeds twee maal naar restaurant Zarza geweest in Leuven. Het is gelegen in de Bongenotenlaan, één van de belangrijkste winkelstraten van Leuven. Het stijlvolle herenhuis geeft zijn bezoekers een warm gevoel, je komt de eetruimte binnen en je bent onder de indruk. Na ons eerste bezoek waren we heel tevreden, een goed menu tegen redelijke prijzen. De wijn selectie was ook goed. 

Ons tweede bezoek was teleurstellend, ze werkten met mindere ingrediënten en de portie rundstartaar was te klein. Als de Chef je kan wegblazen met smaak en creativiteit zijn kleine porties aanvaardbaar, zelfs normaal, we zijn er om te proeven en te leren. Maar als je een kleine hoeveelheid krijgt dat er niet uit springt, valt het kaartenhuisje snel in elkaar. Misschien verdienen ze een derde kans maar hun niveau ligt ver weg van een Michelin Ster en het is redelijk prijzig.

Scala and the Kolacny Brothers in Stadsschouwburg Leuven

On rare occasions, we attend a concert but were very pleased to have selected a performance of Scala and the Kolacny Brothers. This is a choir bringing a mix between classical and modern music. The girls’ choir has more than 200 members and the Kolacny Brother perform internationally. They became very popular in the USA after the movie “Social Network” for which they did the trailer music. Below I have added YouTube fragments of a modern song “I Fail” together with Regi and “Creep” from the “Social Network” movie. Hope you enjoy it. The building of the Stadsschouwburg was also impressive as you see on the pictures.

Af en toe gaan we eens naar een concert en zijn we zeer blij dat we een voorstelling van Scala en de Kolacny Brothers hebben gekozen. Dit is een koor die een mix tussen klassieke en moderne muziek brengt. Het vrouwenkoor heeft reeds meer als 200 leden en treden internationaal op. Ze werden zeer populair in de Verenigde Staten na de film “ The Social Network” waar zij de muziek voor de trailer hebben gemaakt. Ik heb enkele YouTube fragmenten toegevoegd om u een indruk te geven. Een modern lied, “I Fail” met Regi en “Creep” van de film “Social Network”. Ik hoop dat je het leuk vind. Het gebouw van de Stadsschouwburg was ook indrukwekkend zoals je ziet op de foto’s..
