The three-master Mercator a merchant ship from 1932, Oostende

The Mercator is one of the main attractions of Oostende. It is now permanently docked in the yacht harbour and can be visited for a small fee. We were surprised that the interior of the ship was so big. Life on board for the sailors must have been very hard and movies show how the ship was sometimes at the mercy of the raging waves. I wouldn’t like to be on board when the sea is a bit rough. The ship sailed 54 official missions and brought back the remains of Father Damien from Hawaii to Belgium. The Mercator participated in many sailing competitions, World Exhibitions and was a training ship for sea cadets.

De Mercator is de belangrijkste bezienswaardigheid van Oostende. Het schip is nu permanent aangemeerd in de jachthaven en kan worden bezocht voor een kleine bijdrage. We waren verrast dat de binnenkant van deze driemaster zo groot was. Het leven aan boord voor de matrozen moet zeer hard geweest zijn. We hebben op het schip een film gezien van de omstandigheden op zee waar de Mercator aan de genade van de golven was overgeleverd. Op zo’n moment zou ik niet graag aan boord zijn. Het schip heeft 54 officiële missies gevaren en bracht het stoffelijk overschot van Pater Damiaan van Hawaii terug naar België. De Mercator heeft deelgenomen aan vele zeilwedstrijden, wereldtentoonstellingen en was een opleidingsschip voor zeekadetten..

Try some fish on the Visserskaai of Oostende

The fishers’ cay in Oostende “Visserskaai” is where some of the fisher boats arrive with their daily catch. You have an area were fresh fish directly from the sea is sold to the public but for people who are hungry, there are also fish stands who sell ready to eat products like escargot, mixed cold and smoked fish, shrimps… By the way, one of the specialities is dried fish as you see on the fist picture. It is something else than a burger or French fries.

De Visserskaai in Oostende is waar sommige vissersboten aankomen met hun dagelijkse vangst. Er is een marktje waar dagverse vis rechtstreeks wordt verkocht aan het publiek. Voor mensen die honger hebben kan je ook iets eten aan een kraampje. Deze verkopen escargots, koude en gerookte vissoorten, garnalen... Tussen haakjes, één van de specialiteiten is gedroogde vis zoals je op de eerste foto ziet. Het is toch iets anders dan een hamburger en frietjes..

The “St. Pieterstoren”, and the Petrus-Paulus church in Oostende

The Petrus-Paulus church is only 100 years old, it is in a neo gothic architecture. It replaced a church which a burned down accept for the original Saint Peter’s Tower dating from 1478. This church has been built to the model of the Dom in Köln. In the chapel at the back you find the grave of Queen Louise Marie who died in Oostende in 1850. We like to visit churches but this one was closed when we were there. More and more this is the case in Europe out of fear for theft. What a shame society shows less respect for other people’s property.

De Petrus-Paulus kerk is slechts 100 jaar oud, en werd gebouwd in de nieuw Gotische architectuur. Deze kerk verving de afgebrande originele kerk, behalve de Sint-Pieterstoren uit 1478. De nieuwe kerk werd gebouwd naar het voorbeeld van de kathedraal van Keulen. In de kapel, aan de achterzijde, vind je het graf van Koningin Louise Marie die overleed in Oostende in 1850. We houden er van kerken te bezoeken maar deze was terug gesloten. Dit komt meer en meer voor in Europa uit vrees voor vandalisme en diefstal. Het is toch heel spijtig hoe het respect verdwijnt in onze maatschappij..
