The Anglican Church in Singapore, St. Andrews Cathedral

Churches in South East Asia are rather rare, the predominant religions are Buddhism, Islam and Hinduism. The St. Andrews Cathedral is located in the city center of Singapore and originates from the colonial period during the 19th century.

It is hard to approach the church since the large garden is protected by a high fence. Only at the corners of the garden, a garden gate could be opened. The church is completely white and the interior simple. We were a bit surprised to find so many books at each chair.

Singapore’s newest main attraction “The Marina Bay”

The Marina Bay is the most impressive district of Singapore. It is modern with views of the city centre but also new constructions like the Marina Bay Sands Hotel, the Gardens at the Bay, the Singapore Flyer (giant ferry wheel), the Formula One circuit and we should not forget the older statue of the Merlion.

A mythical sea animal protecting the port of Singapore is partially a lion and a fish. The Merlion is continuously spitting water and one of the most photographed statues of the city. The views from the pier are amazing.

The top of the Marina Bay Sands hotel is in the shape of a ship. It is called the Skypark and rests on top of the 55th floor of the hotel. It contains an observation deck, a bar, a restaurant and a 150 meter long swimming pool. On the ground level you see a piece of art looking like a giant lotus flower.

Nice evening views at Haven Lobster and Seafood restaurant, Singapore

It is hard to find an affordable restaurant with a view in Singapore. The Haven Lobster and Seafood Restaurant fulfills both criteria. The food and drinks prices are for the Singapore standards reasonable and you have an excellent view on the Boat Quay river and the parliament building. A first impression does a lot, the lady host greeting potential customers is great. Her appearance, joyfulness and smiles convinces you before you even see the menu. I am a bit disappointed, we didn’t take a picture together with this lady.

Like in many Singaporean restaurants the fish and seafood is kept alive into glass tanks. You even see fresh King Crab. We had several shrimp dishes and some happy hour beers. It was late in the evening but still warm enough to sit outside on the river bank.

Flowers in Singapore. Trying out my new Vitacon Macro Lens.

In 2013, I bought my first good camera, a Nikon D7100 with AF-S Nikkor 18-200 mm lens. After about 1,5 years I still do not know the ins and outs of the camera but learned a few things. The two most frequent situations I would like to improve were Macro photography and food pictures. In Singapore, we bought a Vitacon combination Lens (Macro and 72mm wide angle) which improves both types of photography.

The pictures below show examples of shots taken with the macro lens. When taking the pictures you need to stay still and come really close to your subject. Taking normal pictures with this lens is impossible. We are pleased with the results.
