The world’s most famous bell tower, the Leaning Tower of Pisa

On our Leaning Tower pictures the clouds are even more present above the sky of Pisa. We like our second picture where I took a shot of a roman vase together with the tower. I was looking at the vase through our camera lens end saw the possibility for this photo. When interested you can climb the tower and go to the observation deck. At a certain moment the wind was blowing so hard that Kristel had to support the tower from falling.

Talking about the risks of collapsing, the Leaning Tower has been straightened several times in order not to fall over. The tower is about 56 metres high and was built over a period of 200 years. The soil was just too weak and the low construction sunk already in one direction.

In Belgium we had several bell towers who faced these problems, we just didn’t complete them. Here in Pisa they continued and have to restore and support the construction regularly. Is this architectural excellence or failure? We fear that the marble tower will eventually collapse. When is the question?

Bij de hellende Toren van Pisa foto’s zijn de donkere regenwolken nog meer aanwezig. We waren heel tevreden over onze tweede foto met de Romaanse vaas samen met de toren. Ik keek door de lens naar de vaas en zag ineens de mogelijkheid voor deze foto. Indien geïnteresseerd kan je ook in de toren naar boven klimmen naar het observatiedek. Op een bepaald moment was het zo hard aan het waaien dat Kristel de toren wat ondersteunde.

Maar de risico’s voor instorting door overhelling zijn werkelijk aanwezig en de toren is reeds verschillende keren rechter gezet. Hij is 56 meter hoog en werd gebouw over een periode van 200 jaar. De ondergrond was gewoon te zwak en bij de start zonk de toren reeds weg. 

In België hebben we deze problemen ook gehad bij kerktorens, men heeft ze gewoon niet of lager opgetrokken. Hier in Pisa deed men gewoon verder en als gevolg moeten ze regelmatig de toren ondersteunen en rechter zetten. Is dit een geniaal staaltje van architectuur of falen? We vrezen dat op een bepaald moment de Toren van Pisa toch zal vallen. De vraag is wanneer?

The Cathedral Square or the Piazza dei Miracoli, Pisa

For a first Pisa article, we decided not to start with the Leaning Tower, the building everyone in the world knows. The Leaning Tower is one of the monuments located on the square of Miracles. The walled area is also recognised by UNESCO.

We were very unlucky that Pisa was covered by dark clouds but couldn’t resist taking pictures of the Pisa Cathedral and the Baptistery. The 1.000 year old cathedral is enormous and built in grey marble. In the façade you find many fresco’s and sculptures. We couldn’t enter because there were several religious celebrations on going.

There are some great statues in the square like the little fountain with angels. On the edge of the grass field you find souvenir shops. Kristel started smiling when she saw the shops but I didn’t feel like buying overpriced souvenirs again. It resulted in a surprise reaction. This is the evidence that a man can also surfer while being on holiday.

Voor een eerste Pisa artikel besloten we niet onmiddellijk te schrijven over de Toren van Pisa, het gebouw dat iedereen in de wereld kent. De scheve toren is één van de erkende monumenten op het veld van de mirakels. Dit ommuurd veld is erkend als UNESCO werelderfgoed.

We hadden veel pech met het weer, het was zwaar bewolkt maar we konden het toch niet laten foto’s te nemen van de kathedraal en het Baptisterium. De duizend jaar oude kathedraal is enorm en gebouwd in grijs marmer. Op de gevel staan veel details, mozaïeken en beeldhouwwerken. Toeristen werden niet toegelaten in de kathedraal daar er verschillende religieuze diensten bezig waren. 

Op het plein staan ook mooie standbeelden zoals de kleine fontein met engelen. Aan de rand van het grasveld zijn de winkels open. Kristel begon reeds te lachen toen ze dit zag maar ik voelde er niet veel voor weer over prijsde souvenirs te kopen. Dit leidde tot een verrassende reactie en het bewijs dat een man ook op vakantie kan afzien.
