General Impressions of the city centre of San Juan, Puerto Rico

The city of San Juan is a collection of colourful houses and fantastic architecture. If you would take away the palm trees, you could convince people that you are in an old European city. In one of the more narrow streets we find a garage with a painting of a men carrying a Puerto Rican cloth, it is simple but made an impression.

In several spots around the city we are confronted with hundreds of pigeons. Some locals attract pigeons with food and help tourists to take pictures. In return from a small contribution, they will try a lot to provide you with the best possible shots. The facades of houses show many details but be careful to look where you step. The city was built on a hill. Kristel exaggerated a bit in the gym during the morning and she had a hard time climbing the steep streets. The result is a slim body but you don’t get it for free.

De stad San Juan is een verzameling van kleurrijke huizen en fantastische architectuur. Als je de palmbomen wegdenkt, kan je mensen overtuigen dat dit een oude Europese stad is. In één van de smalle straatjes vinden we een garage met schilderwerk van een man die een Puerto Ricaans symbool omhoog houdt, het is eenvoudig maar maakt indruk. 

Op verschillende plaatsen worden we geconfronteerd met honderden duiven. Sommige inwoners lokken de duiven met eten en helpen toeristen bij het maken van de meest onmogelijke foto’s. Voor een kleine bijdrage doen ze alles om voor je de beste shots te maken. De gevels zijn rijkelijk bezet met details maar pas op waar je stapt. De stad werd gebouwd op een heuvel. Kristel had die ochtend wat overdreven in de fitness met de cross trainer en de steile beklimmingen waren toch zwaar voor de onder druk staande spieren. Het resultaat is echter een slank atletisch lichaam, maar dat krijg je niet gratis..

Music and entertainment in the port of San Juan, Puerto Rico

Sailing into the harbour of San Juan doesn’t feel like arriving on a tropical island. This is a major city with a population of 400,000. Most buildings look like white apartment blocks but once you go into the city it becomes obvious there are many historical houses. On the edge of the capital you see the Fort of San Felipe del Morro and above the houses, the dome of the University of Puerto Rico which is also impressive.

Before docking we see several port vessels, cruise ships and the city airport. We are welcomed by musicians and a dancing group in traditional clothing. Some men are dressed like demons and wear typical Vejigante masks. The rhythm of the music makes you want to dance.

De haven van San Juan binnenvaren voelt niet aan alsof je een tropisch eiland bezoekt. Dit is een grootstad met een populatie van 400,000 en lijkt op een verzameling van witte appartementsblokken. Eens je de stad intrekt zie je echter veel mooie historische huizen. Aan de rand van de hoofdstad staat het Fort van San Felipe del Morro en boven de daken van de stad zie je de indrukwekkende koepel van de universiteit van Puerto Rico. 

Voor we aanmeren zien we nog verschillen boten van de havenautoriteit, cruiseschepen en tevens de stadsluchthaven. We worden verwelkomt door muzikanten en dansers in traditionele kledij. Sommige mannen zijn verkleed als duivels en dragen Vejigante maskers. Het ritme van de opzwepende muziek zet je zelf aan tot dansen..

The Cathedral of San Juan Bautista, half covered in the shade

After a short intermezzo in Europe, we return to the blog articles of the Caribbean and Florida and will publish the remaining articles of our December holiday. We are starting in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where we try to take a picture of the cathedral. It is half covered in shade and we can’t find a position to take a better shot. No worries, the interior of this church completed in 1540 is very beautiful.

We enter and are amazed by the ceiling, this is without any doubt the most impressive church we have seen on the Caribbean. Maybe this could be expected, Puerto Rico with its population of about 4 million people has the best running economy of the region and is the most industrialised. Just have a look at the dome and the stained glass, you can easily compare it to the rich churches in Europe. The most impressive is the statue of the Virgin of Providence with behind her the flag of the Puerto Rico. During 2012 and again in 2013, the pope is going to visit the cathedral of San Juan.

Na een kort intermezzo in Europa, brengen we terug blogartikelen over de Caraïben en Florida. Deze zijn van onze grote rondreis in december. We beginnen in San Juan, Puerto Rico, waar we een overzichtsfoto van de kathedraal proberen te maken. Ze staat half verborgen in de schaduw en we vinden geen mogelijkheid een betere foto te trekken. Maar niet getreurd, de binnenkant van de kerk gebouwd in 1540 is heel mooi. 

We gaan binnen en zijn verbaast door de schoonheid en afwerking van het geboogwelfde plafond. Dit is zonder enige twijfel, de meest indrukwekkende kerk uit het Caraïbisch gebied. Misschien ligt dit wel binnen het verwachtingspatroon, Puerto Rico met zijn 4 miljoen inwoners heeft de best draaiende economie en is sterk geïndustrialiseerd. Kijk maar eens naar de koepel en de sierglas ramen, je kan het makkelijk vergelijken met de rijke Europese kerken. Het meest indrukwekkende was een beeld van de “Maagd van de Voorzienigheid” met achter haar de vlag van Puerto Rico. In 2012 en wederom in 2013 zal deze kathedraal bezoek krijgen van de Paus..
