Make reservations to assure your free visit to the Reichstag, Berlin

We will end our article series about Berlin with the Reichstag or the German Parliament. For us this is one of the most impressive buildings of the capital which should not be skipped during your city trip. This is also the opinion of many tourists because it is always busy. In front of the Reichstag you find the information centre where you reserve your time slot for the free visit. When you are lucky you only have to wait half an hour. Every 15 minutes, a new group of people is allowed to enter the building.

What is the most efficient way to plan a visit to the Reichstag? Just go in the morning and reserve your ticket for the afternoon. There are many other attractions in walking distance which you can visit first. A few examples are the Brandenburger Tor, Unter den Linden, the Basilica, the Holocaust memorial and several museums.

The Reichstag dates from the late 19th century but was heavily damaged by a fire in 1933. When it was refurbished, they replaced the dome by a fantastic glass construction with an observation platform. From the top you have excellent panoramic views of Berlin. This visit is also very popular in the evening hours when it is already dark and the city lights are on. Don't miss out, this is Berlin at its best.

Modern buildings of the fast growing capital of Germany, Berlin

The capital of Germany, Berlin is one of the fastest growing cities of Europe. The city was heavily bombarded in World War II and during the Cold War, many areas were just empty places. One of the new developed areas is Potsdamerplatz. Everywhere you walk you see futuristic buildings emerging.

Some of them use glass and metal in a high rise construction others work with colours and unusual shapes like the Vattenfall building with the white shark fin. Near the Tiergarten you find the Intercontinental Hotel with its pyramid entrance. The enormous white buildings of the government administration can be noticed from a distance. No doubt that the O2 World Arena and the HumboldtBox Infocenter are some of the most eccentric constructions.

A different kind of stars in Restaurant Bocca di Bacco, Berlin

This trendy Italian restaurant is located in the Friedrichstrasse and is known to be popular with celebrities. Occasionally you find here some Hollywood movie stars and later in the evening the restaurant was full. So if they refer to stars, it has nothing related to the Michelin Guide.

As a starter we had the swordfish Carpaccio with a unique and strange combination of strawberries. The second starter like in most Italian restaurants was pasta with truffle. This is a respectable and good dish. As main courses we selected the duck and filet mignon. The main courses were good but not meeting our expectation given the high prices the restaurant was charging. In our opinion, a reasonable Italian restaurant with name and fame which is overpriced for the quality they are serving.

Congress centre or the modern “Haus der Kulturen der Welt” in Berlin

This congress or event hall in the “Tiergarten” area of Berlin is a typical example of architecture which is way ahead for its time. The so called pregnant oyster, as the locals call the hall, is about 60 years old and still looks modern. We had the opportunity to take a look in the grand concert hall.

It is surrounded by a pond and beautiful gardens. On the foreground you see a wooden piece of art. We couldn’t find any information on it but it made an impression. Walking in the direction of the Reichstag, the Parliament of Germany, you find a high black marble clock tower, named the Carillon. It has a special appearance here in the middle of the park and I see no real functional use of this bell tower.

Inside the Berliner Dom and the crypt containing Royal sarcophagi

When entering the church, you arrive in a kind of lobby with a staircase. This is something completely different than in our expectations. Here you buy your ticket. The church itself is one big circular space. We haven't seen such a shape for an entire church before.

How difficult must this have been to erect this enormous dome? The inside of the dome is decorated with gold and paintings in which yellow is a main colour. The side chapels are enormous and each one has its designated assignment like the altar, the organ and the coffins of the emperors. This cathedral is also known as the church of the emperors. In the cellar you find a big room with tens of sarcophagi. The underground area gives me the chills and is also the end of the visit.
