Make reservations to assure your free visit to the Reichstag, Berlin

We will end our article series about Berlin with the Reichstag or the German Parliament. For us this is one of the most impressive buildings of the capital which should not be skipped during your city trip. This is also the opinion of many tourists because it is always busy. In front of the Reichstag you find the information centre where you reserve your time slot for the free visit. When you are lucky you only have to wait half an hour. Every 15 minutes, a new group of people is allowed to enter the building.

What is the most efficient way to plan a visit to the Reichstag? Just go in the morning and reserve your ticket for the afternoon. There are many other attractions in walking distance which you can visit first. A few examples are the Brandenburger Tor, Unter den Linden, the Basilica, the Holocaust memorial and several museums.

The Reichstag dates from the late 19th century but was heavily damaged by a fire in 1933. When it was refurbished, they replaced the dome by a fantastic glass construction with an observation platform. From the top you have excellent panoramic views of Berlin. This visit is also very popular in the evening hours when it is already dark and the city lights are on. Don't miss out, this is Berlin at its best.

We gaan onze artikelreeks over Berlijn eindigen met de Reichstag of het Duitse parlement. Voor ons een van de meest indrukwekkende gebouwen van de hoofdstad dat niet mag ontbreken op je city trip. Dit is ook de mening van vele toeristen want het is er altijd druk. Aan het monument vind je een informatiecentrum waar je de bezoektijd en kaartjes kan vastleggen voor een gratis bezoek. Met een beetje geluk moet je maar 30 minuten wachten. Ieder kwartier laat men een nieuwe groep mensen toe in het gebouw.

Wat is de meest efficiënte wijze om de Reichstag te bezoeken? Ga je plaatsen reserveren in de ochtend en bezoek het gebouw in de namiddag. Er zijn hier vele andere bezienswaardigheden op wandelafstand die je eerst kan bezoeken. Enkele voorbeelden zijn de Brandenburger Tor, Unter den Linden, de Basiliek, het Holocaust monument en verschillende musea. 

De Reichstag dateert van de laat 19de eeuw en werd zwaar beschadigd door een brand in 1933. Gedurende de restauratie heeft men de koepel vervangen door een fantastische glazen constructie met observatieterras. Van de top heb je een uitstekend zicht over Berlijn. Dit bezoek is ook mogelijk en zeer populair in de avonduren wanneer alle lichtjes van de stad aan zijn. Mis deze kans niet, het is Berlijn op zijn best..

A world tour art collection in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London

It was not my intention to visit this museum but passing by such a beautiful building you get curious. Walking into the main lobby is an experience, from the dome a modern glass art piece comes down. It is very large and impressive just like the museum with its collection of five million pieces. On the right side of the entrance you find the Sculpture Courts with statues and stained glass windows. Walking through the museum you have areas displaying art from France, the UK, China, Korea, Japan,… It continues, just too much to give an impression of everything.

In one of the rooms, I was confronted with a large glass container. Inside it laid the Ardabil Carpet, one of the most detailed and largest Islamic carpets made in Iran, previous Persia. It is about 500 years old and the glass box prevents you from walking on this fragile carpet made of silk and wool. To preserve the state of the carpet, the light is only lit ten minutes every half hour.

In the middle of the museum there is an inner courtyard with outdoor garden and the back of the building looks totally different than the front façade. Even the canteen is amazing with the columns, stained glass and modern chandeliers. A pity they put crap furniture in it with plastic chairs. On my tour, I also liked the silver wear, the stained glass, a very old wing piano and off course the building itself. When you are in London you should visit this free museum it is just fantastic.

Het was niet mijn intentie om dit museum te bezoeken maar als je zo’n mooi gebouw voorbij gaat, wordt je nieuwsgierig. Binnen stappen in de lobby is een ervaring, een modern glazen kunstwerk daalt neer uit een mooie koepel. Het is enorm groot, net als het museum met zijn collectie van vijf miljoen kunstwerken. Op je rechterkant vind je de “Sculpture Courts” met hun beeldhouwwerken en sierglas. Als je door het museum wandelt, toont iedere zaal je kunst uit een specifieke regio of land: Frankrijk, de UK, China, Korea, Japan... Het gaat maar door, teveel om overal een impressie van weer te geven.

In één van de zalen werd ik geconfronteerd met een glazen container waarin het tapijt van Ardabil ligt. Dit is één van de meest gedetailleerde en grootste islamitische tapijten ontworpen in Iran, het vroegere Perzië. Het is gemaakt met zijde en wol en is ongeveer 500 jaar oud. De glazen kooi vermijdt dat mensen er op stappen en beschermd het tegen vuil. Om de toestand van het tapijt in stand te houden wordt het slechts 10 minuten per half uur verlicht. 

In het midden van het museum ligt er een binnenplein met open lucht tuin. De achterkant van het gebouw ziet er totaal anders uit dan de voorgevel. Zelfs de kantine met zijn zuilen, glaswerk en moderne lusters is verbluffend. Het is wel spijtig van het plastieken meubilair dat hier niet in het klasse gebouw past. Op mijn ontdekking door het museum was ik ook onder de indruk van het zilverwerk, de sierglazen, een oude vleugelpiano en het gebouw zelf natuurlijk. Als je in Londen bent moet je zeker dit gratis museum bezoeken, het is gewoon fantastisch..

The Neo Gothic Museum of Natural History and its treasures, London

London is a city with fantastic museums and most of them have free entrance like the Natural History Museum. If you would like to support the museum, you are however free to make a contribution while visiting. This is a very good concept; people assess themselves how much they would like to give. The museum is focussing on biology and has a collection of dinosaur skeletons, minerals, precious stones, fossils, mammals, birds, insects and lots more. On the first floor there hangs a cross-section of a 1.500 year old Sequoia tree trunk from California.

For me, the Neo Gothic building from 1864 was the most fascinating piece of art. The façade and shape of the main entrance are similar to a church with two clock towers. The building is in excellent shape and the columns supporting the arched doorway are carved master pieces. As soon as you enter, you see the skeleton of a dinosaur in the main hall.

The best views of the main hall are from the upper floors, while climbing the stairs; you face the statue of Charles Darwin with his world famous book, “The origin of Species” and his Evolution Theory. Life on earth has evolved and this process has taken millions of years. His views are not aligned with the creation of Adam and Eve by God in the Book of Genesis. In today’s world both Darwin’s views and the Bible get more than a billion followers. In the modern era the gap between religion and science is growing but both have their values.

Enjoy the views of the main hall and if you would like to visit the museum, it is located near the metro (underground) station of South Kensington. You will not regret it.

Londen is een stad met fantastische musea en de meeste bieden gratis toegang aan, net zoals het Museum voor Natuurgeschiedenis. Als je het museum wil steunen kan je gedurende jouw bezoek een bijdrage geven. Het is een goed concept daar de bezoeker zelf bepaalt hoeveel hij wil geven. Het museum richt zich op biologie en heeft een collectie dinosaurus skeletten, mineralen, zeldzame stenen, fossielen, zoogdieren, vogels, insecten en nog veel meer. Op het eerste verdiep hangt er een doorsnede van een 1.500 jaar oude Sequoia boomstam uit Californië.

Voor mij is het Neo Gotische gebouw uit 1864 een fascinerend staaltje architectuur. De gevel en vorm van het middenstuk zijn gelijkaardig gebouwd als bij een kerk met twee kloktorens. Het gebouw is in uitstekende staat en de zuilen die het inkomportaal ondersteunen zijn ongelooflijk mooi ontworpen. Van zodra je de hoofdhal binnen gaat, word je geconfronteerd met een dinosaurus. 

De beste impressie van de hoofdgalerij krijg je op de bovenverdiepingen. Terwijl je de trap opklimt kijk je naar een standbeeld van Charles Darwin bekend van zijn boek “De oorsprong der soorten” en zijn Evolutie Theorie. Het leven op aarde heeft zich ontwikkeld over miljoenen jaren. Zijn visie is niet te verzoenen met het Scheppingsverhaal van Adam en Eva uit de bijbel. Zowel Darwin en de Bijbel hebben meer dan een miljard volgers. In de 21ste eeuw wordt de afstand tussen religie en wetenschap steeds groter maar beiden brengen waarde bij aan de gemeenschap. 

Indien je het museum wil bezoeken, het is gemakkelijk bereikbaar met openbaar vervoer en ligt op wandelafstand voor het metro station South Kensington. Je zal er geen spijt van hebben..
