Our 15th year wedding anniversary

We are now married for 15 years and still in love. Time to compare some pictures. The left one was taken on our wedding day and the right one this year. My hair is gone but Kristel is still there.

The Old Box – 1988: Kristel in a Grand écart or split

As a nine year old girl, Kristel was a gymnast and grabbed every possible opportunity to improve her skills. On this picture, you see her doing a split next to a snooker table. While her father played snooker with friends, she practiced.

The Old Box – 1986: In the army now, military school of Zedelgem

“In the army now” was a popular song of the band “Status Quo”. When it was released in 1986 we were playing and singing it all the time. This had a special reason.

At the age of 16, I started at military school in Zedelgem Brugge. In the army you do as you are told, so when they added me to the medical support troops I knew something must be wrong here. I did not want to become a doctor or nurse. In your second year, depending on your results you can change your orientation to land- air- or sea forces. It was nothing for me and after half a year, I returned to a civilian school to study maths and economics.

The Old Box - 1994: Kristel with the Voice of Europe, Eddy Wally

This picture was taken at one of the many short performances of Eddy Wally. He was a popular Flemish singer who started his career in 1960 after working as a merchant. That’s in fact the place where he started and continued singing for decades.

His biggest hit is Chérie with which he stood 3 weeks number one in the music charts Ultratop 50. Next to giving concerts all over the world, he was a frequent guest in talk shows and soap series.

In 2012, the Belgian population gets confronted with reality of life when Eddy Wally like many normal old people goes living in a retirement home and ends his singing career at the age of 80.

The Old Box: The one eyed cowboy from Belgium in 1978

In our Old Box series we go back in time for family and friends. On this picture you can see Filip, we guess at the age of 8, in 1978. This is about 35 years ago. Playing a one eyed cowboy in those days was still acceptable. If an 8 year old boy in 2013 would dress up like that, friends and family would be worried. Don’t forget, in those days we did not have computers, Playstations, Gameboys, Nintendo’s or X-Boxes.

The Old Box: The Holy Communion of Kristel in 1987

This is only the second "Old Box" publication, each month we will try to write something to surprise our followers and family. In this article we go back to the Holy Communion of Kristel in 1987. She was always special my wife, instead of wearing traditional white she preferred light blue.

It must have been a special day, your first in sharing of the bread and receiving the symbolic body of Christ. Your first host and what a preparation cycle in the form of catechism you had to participate in to get here. As a kid you probably don't think of the Last Supper but about the celebration party with your family after the church ceremony.

The old box: Occidental Fun Club, Puerto Plata in 1998

We decided to occasionally publish a picture from at least a decade ago and share an experience from a different era. A week ago, we posted an article about the summer carnival in Rotterdam and when I saw the picture below, well, there it is carnival every day.

The picture was taken in 1998, about 15 years ago. I had more hair, big glasses and a large moustache. In those days, this seemed normal to me. How strange. We stayed in the Occidental Gran Hotel Playa Dorada in Puerto Plata on the Dominican Republic. What I remember is the entertainment, discos and of course the cocktails.

During that holiday, I was for the first time confronted with real dancing, the salsa, merengue, batchacha and mambo. In the disco, all people performed like professional dancers. One year later, I took up dancing in Belgium.
