Giant Malaysian Independence flag on Merdeka Square, Kuala Lumpur

Merdeka Square is for us one of the most beautiful areas of Kuala Lumpur. In the middle stands a 95 meters flagpole holding the Malaysian flag. In 1957 the Malaysian Flag replaced the Union Jack when the country became independent from the UK.

On Merdeka Square are many architectural treasures like the Royal Selangor Club, the old city hall, the Sultan Abdul Samad building and some art museums. Most buildings are in colonial style. I love the picture of Kristel in front of the artificial waterfall.

Merdeka Square is voor ons één van de mooiste pleinen van Kuala Lumpur. In het midden staat een vlaggenstok van ongeveer 95 meter hoog, hieraan siert de Maleisische vlag. In 1957 verving deze de Union Jack toen het land onafhankelijk werd van het Verenigd Koninkrijk. 

Op Merdeka Square staan veel architecturale schatten zoals de Royal Selangor Club, het oude stadhuis, het Sultan Abdul Samad paleis en enkele kunstmusea. De meeste gebouwen zijn in koloniale stijl. Ik hou van de foto van Kristel voor de kunstmatige waterval.

Experiencing different kitchens at Restaurant Makan, Kuala Lumpur

Double Tree by Hilton is a very beautiful hotel in KL. In our opinion it has one of the best restaurant of KL for tourists to try out the local cuisine. Makan is a big restaurant but has a cozy interior with several separate dining area depending on the culinary region. Makan is in fact the Malaysian word for eating.

All food is prepared on the spot by cooks in open kitchen. Each cooking display has fresh quality products and is perfectly decorated. Makan gives you the possibility to explore Malay, Chinese, Indian, Peranakan, Kristang and Iban cooking. Be brave and try as much as possible, this is a unique opportunity.

Some appetizers are served at the table, all main courses and dessert you may collect from the open kitchens. Our first appetizer was a meat soup served out of a long wooden pipe. The waiter was pouring the soup and meat out of the pipe at our table, never seen such a preparation before. All flavors and preparations were very good and tasty. Would you like to try Makan? Go for it, it is the best way to explore the high level Malaysian cuisine in one evening.

Double Tree by Hilton is een heel mooi hotel in KL. Naar onze mening heeft het het beste restaurant van KL om de lokale keuken uit te proberen. Makan is een groot restaurant maar is gezellig ingericht met afzonderlijke ruimtes, die elk hun eigen regionale keuken vertegenwoordigen. Makan betekent eten in het Maleisisch.

Alles wordt ter plaatse door Chefs klaargemaakt in open keukens. Iedere stand gebruikt verse kwaliteitsproducten en is prachtig gedecoreerd. Makan geeft je de mogelijkheid de Maleisische, Chinese, Indische, Peranakan, Kristang en Iban keuken op één avond te ontdekken. Wees moedig en proef zoveel mogelijk, dit is een unieke ervaring.

Sommige voorgerechten worden aan tafel geserveerd, de hoofdgerechten en desserts kan je kiezen aan de keukens. Als eerste voorgerecht kregen we vleessoep geserveerd uit een grote houten pijp. De ober serveerde dit rechtstreek uit deze pijp aan tafel, het leek wel een stuk boom. We hebben nog nooit zoiets gezien. Alle bereidingen en smaken zijn zeer goed. Zou jij ook Makan willen proberen? Gewoon doen, het is de beste manier om een ruim spectrum van de Maleisische keuken op hoog niveau te ontdekken op één avond.

Sze Ya Temple hidden in an alley, Kuala Lumpur

In the heart of Chinatown Kuala Lumpur, we saw a blue facade of a temple, it almost resembled a normal house. It was in fact a small gate, giving access to the courtyard of the Sze Ya Temple. You could feel the history of the more than 150 year old temple. Older Chinese men were sitting on a bench in wondered what these foreigners did here. How could they even find this place?

Although there were no visitors, candles were lit. There was smoke inside the temple and the altar was spectacular. Above the altar hung a wooden boat consisting of three floors, displaying many carved images of Chinese men. We felt this is a very active temple were not many tourist enter.

In hartje Chinatown van Kuala Lumpur zagen we een blauwe facade van een tempel, het leek net een huisje. Het was echter de toegangspoort van de Sze Ya Tempel verborgen op een klein koertje achter deze gevel. De tempel is meer als 150 jaar oud en dat voel je. Twee oudere Chinese mannen zitten op een bankje en kijken vol verwondering dat er hier westerlingen komen. Hoe hebben ze in godsnaam deze plaats gevonden? 

Alhoewel er geen bezoekers waren, stonden overal brandende kaarsen. Er hing wat rook in de tempel en het altaar was spectaculair. Boven het altaar hing een houten boot bestaande uit drie verdiepingen met daarin gekerfde beeltenissen van Chinese mannen. Dit is een zeer actieve tempel waar bijna geen toeristen komen.

Skybar and Gobo Grill at Traders Shangri-La Hotel, KL

The Traders Shangri-La Hotel at KLCC Park in the city center of Kuala Lumpur is famous for its Skybar. The bar is located on the top floor and offers excellent views on the Petronas Towers. In the bar, there is a large indoor swimming pool. The lights of the Skybar were dimmed and the room filled with blue and red lights. Careful you don't fall into the swimming pool.

Many people find this the place to be for evening drinks. The sexiest and hottest place in town. All window tables were reserved. When entering the music was very loud and we already knew this is not our style. We decided to eat something in the Gobo Grill restaurant in the same hotel.

The Gobo Grill restaurant also had a bar with Champagne Tower. The house brand is Perrier Jouet with flowers painted on each bottle and glass. We had a table at the window and the wall next to us was decorated with a giant red wine glass. We have to admit it was special.

We selected a few items a la carte: beef tartar, lobster bisque, smoked salmon and the wagyu entrecote. The wagyu beef was very good but overall, was the food average and too expensive. There is a clear gap between the branding of the hotel and the level of the cuisine.

Het Traders Shangri-La Hotel aan KLCC Park in het stadscentrum van Kuala Lumpur is beroemd voor zijn Skybar. De bar is gelegen op het bovenste verdiep en biedt uitstekende zichten op de Petronas Torens. In de bar, bevind zich een binnenzwembad. Alle lichten waren gedimd, rode en blauwe neonlichten zorgen voor wat sfeer. Opgelet dat je niet in het zwembad valt.

Vele mensen vinden dit "The Place to Be" voor een avonduitje. De meest sexy en heetste plaats van Kuala Lumpur. Alle tafeltjes aan het raam waren gereserveerd. De muziek stond er heel luid en we beseften onmiddellijk dat dit niets voor ons was. We besloten iets te gaan eten in het Gobo Grill restaurant van hetzelfde hotel.

In het Gobo Grill restaurant heeft men een bar met Champagnetoren. Het huismerk is Perrier Jouet, hun flessen en glazen zijn beschilderd met witte bloemen. We kregen een tafeltje aan het raam en de muur naast ons was beschilderd met een reusachtig rode wijnglas. We moeten toegeven dat dit onze aandacht trok. 

We kozen enkele gerechten van de menukaart: rundertartaar, kreeftenbisque, gerookte zalm en Wagyu entrecote. Het Wagyu vlees was zeer goed maar in het algemeen waren de gerechten van gemiddelde kwaliteit en veel te duur. Er is een duidelijke kloof tussen de branding van het hotel en het niveau van de keuken.
