General impressions of Monte Carlo on a rainy day, Monaco

It is hard to get a good impression of Monaco when it is raining all day long but we tried our best to explore the mini state built on a hill. With a map in our hand it is even difficult to find your way around because all the streets are on different height levels. The best way to go from on point to an other in under the ground and use stairs or elevators. What a strange construction.

We took a few shots of the Monaco marina with its super yachts. On the hill you see the two towers of the famous Monte Carlo Casino. We spend some time in the Royal Palace and Museum which was interesting and where we found shelter against the poring rain. It was however not allowed to take pictures in the palace.

In many places in Monaco you don’t feel welcome as a tourist, if there is one country in the world who doesn’t need the income from tourism, it is most likely this mini state for the ultra rich.

Het is moeilijk een goede weergave te maken van Monaco wanneer het de hele dag regent maar we deden ons best om deze ministaat gebouwd op een heuvel te ontdekken. Met een stratenplan in de hand was het zelfs niet eenvoudig je weg terug te vinden daar de straten allen op verschillende hoogte niveaus aangelegd zijn. De eenvoudigste wijze om van de ene naar de andere plaats te gaan is onder de grond door gebruik te maken van trappen en liften. Wat een rare gedachte zoiets te bouwen.

We namen enkele foto’s van de jachthaven met zijn super boten. Op de heuvel zie je de twee torens van het Monte Carlo casino. Terwijl we schuilden voor de regen hebben heel wat tijd doorgebracht in het Koninglijk Paleis met museum. Het bezoek was interessant maar men mocht er geen foto’s nemen.

In Monaco worden toeristen niet echt gewaardeerd, je voelt je er niet welkom. Als er één land is in de wereld die geen inkomsten nodig heeft uit toerisme zal het waarschijnlijk wel deze ultra rijke mini staat zijn.

The forbidden world of Alain Ducasse and the ultra rich, Monaco

The square at the Place du Casino in Monaco is probably the most idyllic spot of the mini State. You are surrounded by beautiful buildings like the Hotel de Paris, the Opera of Monte Carlo, the Casino and the Brasserie of Café de Paris. The facades of the buildings are real pieces of art. Unfortunately it was raining but still super cars were arriving like this red Ferrari.

We didn't want to enter the Casino because we believe as a player you have the odds against you. Even as frequent cruise ship passengers we never play when the odds are against us, only with coupons or when skill is involved.

We were however interested in Hotel de Paris. It is the home of one of the most famous chefs in the world, Mr. Alain Ducasse. He has about twenty restaurants all over the world and three of them have been awarded three Michelin Stars. His flagship restaurant is here in Hotel de Paris, it is called "Le Louis XV".

After dining in already 35 Michelin Star restaurants, we intended to have a look at the restaurant and the menu. Entering the lobby of the hotel, we were stopped by the porter who decisively refused us access. We couldn't believe this. Probably only famous people and euro millionaires are allowed in. We find this scandalous and will never ever consider again making reservations in an Alain Ducasse restaurant in the world.

Het plein aan Place du Casino in Monaco is waarschijnlijk het meest idyllische plaatsje van de mini Staat. Je bent omringd door mooie gebouwen zoals Hotel de Paris, de Opera van Monte Carlo, het Casino en de brasserie van Café de Paris. De gevels van de gebouwen zijn echte kunstwerken. Spijtig genoeg regende het maar er kwamen toch nog super auto's aan zoals deze rode Ferrari.

We waren niet van plan het Casino binnen te gaan daar je als speler de winstkans tegen hebt. Zelfs als regelmatige cruise passagiers spelen we nooit aan boord als we de kansen tegen hebben, alleen met coupons of bij vaardigheidsspelen.

We waren echter wel geïnteresseerd in Hotel de Paris. Het is de thuishaven van de wereldberoemde chef Alain Ducasse. Hij heeft ongeveer twintig restaurants waarvan er drie, drie Michelin Sterren werden toegekend. Zijn hoofdrestaurant is in dit hotel en noemt "Le Louis XV". 

Na reeds gedineerd te hebben in 35 Michelin restaurants, wilden we dit exclusieve restaurant en zijn menu eens zien. Toen we de lobby binnen wandelden werden we echter tegen gehouden door de portier die ons categoriek toegang tot het hotel weigerde. We konden het gewoon niet geloven. Waarschijnlijk is Hotel de Paris enkel toegankelijk voor beroemdheden en euro-miljonairs. We vonden dit schandalig en zullen nooit meer overwegen reservaties te maken in een van de restaurants van Alain Ducasse..

Monte Carlo Aquarium in the Oceanographic Institute, Monaco

When we first heard about the aquarium we were not really interested although a friend had recommended it to us. We have been to the Sealife centers in Belgium and The Netherlands, the aquarium in the Dubai Mall in the Emirates and the Seaworld in Orlando and San Diego. What could an aquarium in Monaco offer us?

We were motivated by the weather, it was raining and we found shelter inside the aquarium. To our surprise, it was excellent. The aquarium is specialised on the Mediterranean Sea but also features other regions with tropical fish. Next to many coral displays it also features a Shark Lagoon.

It is one of the oldest aquariums in the world. It was founded in 1903. It is however not easy to find it. We recommend you to visit the port Hercule of Monaco and walk via the Fort Antoine to the aquarium. It is not always easy to take picture of moving fish but I was pleased with these shots.

Toen we de eerste keer hoorden over het aquarium in Monaco waren we niet echt geïnteresseerd. Een vriendin had het ons nochtans aanbevolen. We hadden reeds de aquaria van het Sealife centrum in België en Nederland, het aquarium in de Dubai Mall in de Emiraten en Seaworld in Orlando en San Diego bezocht. Wat kan een aquarium in Monte Carlo ons dan nog bieden? 

We werden echter gemotiveerd door het slechte weer, het was hard aan het regenen en we konden schuilen in het aquarium. Tot onze verrassing was het gewoon uitstekend. Ze zijn gespecialiseerd in de Middellandse Zee maar tonen ook tropische vissen uit andere gebieden. Naast veel koraal heeft men er ook een haaienbaai. 

Het is een van de oudste aquaria ter wereld, opgericht in 1903. Het is wel niet gemakkelijk het aquarium te vinden. We bevelen je aan de Hercules haven te bezoeken en via het Fort Antoine naar het aquarium te wandelen. Foto’s nemen van bewegende vissen is moeilijk maar we zijn toch tevreden van deze serie..

Robust walls and a modern organ in the cathedral of Monaco

Our pictures of this cathedral are a bit weak; we were so disappointed in the weather in Monaco that we almost didn’t see the beauty of this cathedral. The whole day it was poring, our legs were completely wet and we carried an umbrella around on our holiday. Long live the nice weather at the Cote d’Azur.

The cathedral is small but the façade holds marvellous details. The inside of the building looks a lot taller, probably the intension of the architect. Make something look big although it is small. The painting on the inner dome ceiling is fantastic. The most impressive was a modern organ; the blue shine was just perfect. It took me probably ten attempts to make a sharp picture, the light was very difficult. This is also the church were you find the Royal graves of Prince Renier II and Princess Gracia.

Onze foto’s van de kathedraal zijn een beetje zwakjes, we waren zo teleurgesteld in het weer in Monaco dat we de schoonheid van deze kerk bijna niet zagen. Het was de hele dag aan het gieten, onze benen waren volledig nat geregend en we sleurden een paraplu mee op onze vakantie. Lang leve het goede weer aan de Cote d’Azur. 

De kathedraal is klein maar de gevel bevat super mooie details. De binnenkant van de kerk lijkt heel wat hoger, waarschijnlijk de intentie van de architect. Laat iets groot uitschijnen dat in feite klein is. Het schilderwerk aan op de koepel is fantastisch. Het meest indrukwekkende was echter het moderne orgel, het blauwe schijnsel was gewoon perfect. Het heeft me waarschijnlijk tien pogingen gekost om een scherpe foto te maken, het licht was heel moeilijk. In deze kerk vind je ook de Koninklijke graven van Prins Renier II en Princes Gracia..
