Views from the 70m high belfry of the Ypres Cloth Hall

The Cloth Hall of Ypres is an amazing building dating from the 13th century altough it was completely destroyed during the First World War. Its 70m high belfry has been added on the UNESCO World Heritage list and contains a carillon containing 49 bells which were luckily silent when stood next to them.

After a long climb on very small stairs, we reached the top of the tower. Walking around on the observation deck we can see the Menen memorial hall, the beautifull facades of the market and side streets. The sky was clear enough to view the entire city.

Remembering the First World War in Flanders Fields Museum, Ieper

In a few weeks time we will enter the new calendar year, 2014. This is a special year for Flanders region and Ieper in Belgium, 100 years after the start of WWI. It was here that the German troops battled for four years against the allied army. Millions, soldiers and civilians lost their lives in this war. The Flanders region was one of the heaviest battlefields ever.

The museum shows authentic pictures taken by soldiers and civilians; a lot of it is digitalised and displayed on light boards. You have the possibility to read newspaper articles of this war period, see the propaganda posters, arms and gear of soldiers.

We were extremely impressed with video messages from actors playing a role of a person in the First World War. The persons walk into a big high quality screen, just like they are there with you and tell their stories: a soldier in the trenches, a nurse on the battlefield, civilians on the run, a German army officer….

When you leave the museum, you pass under a series of banners displaying the past wars and current armed conflicts with the most recent ones: revolution in Syria, revolution in Yemen, Libyan civil war, war in south Ossetia, Gaza war, Lebanon war, civil war in Palestine…. and these are only the conflicts started in the last 5 years. Going back in history, the list seems endless.

Food art and top quality in Restaurant Sint Nicolas, Ieper

We wrote already several times about this fabulous two star Michelin restaurant in Ieper and keep going back to it. Sint Nicolas is without any doubt our favourite restaurant but unfortunately a three hour drive from where we live. The food presentation is real art and we are sure the chef needs a lot of patience to finish each plate.

We always take the menu “Talent & Passion”. It is each time a discovery of many ingredients, taste, unknown preparation techniques, excellent presentation, classic dishes with a modern touch and we can continue like this. There are just not enough words to describe the talent and quality of the Chef.

Why do we love food? Restaurant St. Nicolas, Elverdinge

We personally love food, experience taste, creativity, new ingredients, to learn while eating, and to experience the art of wine pairing. All restaurants do this on their own level and we are convinced that each Chef tries to make the best possible meal for his customers. Here in Elverdinge, at Hostelerie St. Nicolas, they achieve the highest standards. The Michelin Guide rates this restaurant at two stars and only three other restaurants have a higher rating in Belgium. Restaurant St. Nicolas is truly one of the best restaurants of Belgium.

For us this article is very special, we love food and wine and like to write about it on our blog. This blog article is our 1.000nd contribution to Blogger and we published about 10.000 pictures in the last three years. We had to select a subject matter which is close to our heart. Isn’t food something we all need and love?

The menu selected was called: “Culinary enjoyment in the sun”. Maybe this was for us in Belgium, the last sunshine of 2012, because we now expect the winter to make its entrance. The food and wine selection was excellent as you can see on the pictures below.

Our best overall restaurant experience, Hostelerie St. Nicolas

For our 100th article of Belgium on this blog, we had to write something special. Like all Belgians, we love food and restaurants, so the choice was easy. We just visited restaurant St. Nicolas in Elverdinge, a two star Michelin restaurant, with the amazing chef Franky Vanderhaeghe and hostess Sandra Nys. This time we were so impressed that after our visit we wrote a positive letter to the Michelin Guide. This restaurant must be a candidate for a third star. The Maitre explained restaurant St. Nicolas works with classic products with a modern presentation.

The amuses are just fantastic and super creations of the chef. The first starter is served in three different preparations, which is a special concept we have not seen before. We will try to describe the plates which tasted excellent and are super pieces of art. This is a top restaurant and without doubt my favourite place, above all the three stars I have visited until now. A culinary travel in the unknown which stole my heart. The wine selection with all courses was excellent.
