Homer Spit, the place to be for fresh fish and sea food

The small fisher’s village of Homer is located in the south of the northern state, connected to the Gulf of Alaska. This is the highest point where cruise ships dock. It is not surprising tourists come here by ship, the driving distance from Vancouver is about 4.000 km. We came by car from Palmer, with stops it took us about 8 hours.

At the beginning of the Spit, we made a stop to look at the mountains of Kenai National Park. It is raining but we still saw snow when the clouds flew by. On the spit you find many restaurants and shops, some of them connected by a boardwalk. It is fun to browse around.

Fishers and tourists bring in their fresh catch of the day. Big halibuts are hanging on a wooden plank, ready to be deboned. As a tourist you can request them to send your frozen halibut to your home. A sign warns us it can be slippery when wet or frosty, most likely they mean every day of the year. Strange people these Homer Sapiens.

Our favorite place was the Fresh Catch Café. By coincidence we entered this wooden restaurant looking for shelter of the strong rain. Not hungry yet, we decided to have a glass of white wine at the bar with a small bite: freshly cooked shrimps with a Bloody Mary cocktail sauce and sashimi of red salmon. The sashimi was not on the card but the Chef made it especially for us. We absolutely wanted to taste raw Alaskan salmon. The next day we had dinner in this restaurant and would strongly recommend the Fresh Catch Café on your visit to Homer, Alaska.

Land's End Premier Oceanfront Resort Hotel, Homer

This hotel in Homer is located on the Spit on walking distance from the boardwalk shops and fresh fish restaurants. Our room was located directly on the beach. In good weather conditions this would be great but it was cold and raining. It is a rather old hotel but probably the best you can get on the spit. Most people are camping.

We liked the possibility to walk on the beach to a restaurant. There was however a lot of noise during the night from fisher boats leaving the port. Homer is the halibut fishing capital of the world, the main reason why most tourists come here.

Bear viewing in bad weather conditions at Katmai National Park

What should have been one of the highlights of our holiday turned out to be below expectations due to the weather circumstances and the information provided by our Dutch touroperator Askja.

The day started at Emerald Air Service office where our floatplane was ready for take-off. We had to sign a declaration that we took the trip on our own risk and that bear viewing in the wild (while hiking) could result in injury or death. After signature we got a briefing and rubber walking boots up to above our waist. This you will need to cross the wetlands and creeks.

The flight took about 1,5 hours and we landed on a river in Katmai National Park. It was raining hard and luckily we were prepared for this. Rain proof jackets, pants, a cap and gloves. The pilot stayed with the plane and a guide took the lead in the hike. We were with six participants, all unarmed. Careful, know what you are starting with, it rains about 80% of the time in Katmai during the summer period.

The aim was to approach large size male grizzly bears, exactly the opposite of what we were told in Denali National Park. There live about 2.200 bears in Katmai so you are guaranteed to see them. During the approach everyone walks in one line so that the bear doesn't see a whole group approaching him. The risks are minimal because we are a neutral element in this ecosystem. Each time the bear notices us, we stop and continue approaching him in a circle movement. We do this until we are at a distance of about 50 meters in an open field.

In case the bear would approach you, just stand still. If he would come too close or charge towards the group, you need to start shouting and clapping together. He will go away because he never attacks multiple preys together. If you start running or go backwards, you are in trouble. When the bear sees you as prey he could run up to a speed of 50 km an hour. We never came into a dangerous situation with bears and saw four male grizzlies from close by, all weighing above 600 kg. Hard to imagine that when they are born, they only weigh about half a kilo.

After a very wet hike of about three hours we returned to the floatplane. The whole hike we could see bears around us in the meadows. It was becoming very cold, heavy rain and wind made us soaking wet. The water stood high in our boots and there was no possibility to change clothing until after the flight. When you do this ensure that you have dry cloths in your car and not in your backpack.

We would return to Katmai National Park to see the bears fishing on salmon at the Brook Falls. In July this is the best place to see a large number of bears. We are extremely disappointed with the Dutch Tour Operator Askja and also Emerald Air service not taking us to that location instead. Like in many other places, we are of the opinion Aksja doesn't provide the right information to its travelers. A very poor service.

Scenic drive from Palmer (Matsu Valey) to Homer, Alaska

This trip by car takes about 5 hours and has a lot to offer. We recommend to leave early in the day so that you can enjoy the sceneries and make a few stops on the route. When you have a Mile-Post it should be easy to identify the view points and attractions.

At the lakes and open fields you can spot birds. We saw seagulls, ducks and bald eagles. Unfortunately our eagle pictures were not sharp enough. The snowcapped mountains are always intriguing to watch. We drove a 4 wheel drive Cherokee Jeep, which could come in handy on all kinds of terrain.

We are very pleased with our lake reflection pictures and we did an amazing short bush hike. From a hill top we could see the clear blue water with people kayaking. Alaska is never boring, even when you have to drive long distances. On the Sterling Highway you need to be careful for crossing moose.
