Best airplane spotting in the world, Maho Beach, St. Maarten

When you like swimming, sun, parties and airplanes, this is the place of your dreams. Maho Beach has all the spectacular elements to make your beach day a great adventure. Each time we are in St. Maarten we spend a day here.

From the Sunset Bar we enjoy the music, beer and swimming. Above us, we see the small planes landing. Occasionally, a large plane arrives. Everyone waves, shouts and takes pictures.

When the Boeing 747 of KLM departs, the pilots are waving back to the beach before driving to their position to take off. Don't stay behind the Jetstream of the large planes because the force will throw you into the sea.

Long distance pictures of airplanes flying by, Herent

After buying a 150-600mm Tamron lens, I was eager to take some close-up pictures of birds in the garden. There were only small birds flying around and hiding in trees. Concluding this was a waste of time, I focused on aircrafts making their approach to Brussels International Airport, about 15 kilometers to the west.

To my surprise it was possible to make good shots even though the airplanes were very far from the location I stood, probably about 2 km. On the pictures you see the colorful planes of TAP Portugal, Air Arabia, Aeroflot, Aegean, Iberia and the tour operator Thomas Cook. All tough we fly a lot, we have not yet tried any of these companies.

Nai Yang Beach airplane spotting, Phuket

This fabulous beach is located in the north east part of Phuket. Nai Yang Beach is ideal for people who love to take a walk and see airplanes. We were a bit unlucky because the two times we went there it was raining. This is not a real problem because even in the rain it stays warm in Thailand. It was however more difficult to take pictures and to protect my camera from the water.

We combined our walk with a brunch in the Indigo Pearl hotel and walked a few kilometers north on the beach to the airport. On your way you pass by palm trees, see wild dogs, eagles and many locals who enjoy swimming and fishing. Sometimes there are turtles on the beach.

The location where the airplanes land is unbelievable. Phuket International Airport is rather busy and airplanes land continuously. We have some nice pictures of Bangkok Air, Thai Airways, Jetstar and Air Asia.

Bear viewing in bad weather conditions at Katmai National Park

What should have been one of the highlights of our holiday turned out to be below expectations due to the weather circumstances and the information provided by our Dutch touroperator Askja.

The day started at Emerald Air Service office where our floatplane was ready for take-off. We had to sign a declaration that we took the trip on our own risk and that bear viewing in the wild (while hiking) could result in injury or death. After signature we got a briefing and rubber walking boots up to above our waist. This you will need to cross the wetlands and creeks.

The flight took about 1,5 hours and we landed on a river in Katmai National Park. It was raining hard and luckily we were prepared for this. Rain proof jackets, pants, a cap and gloves. The pilot stayed with the plane and a guide took the lead in the hike. We were with six participants, all unarmed. Careful, know what you are starting with, it rains about 80% of the time in Katmai during the summer period.

The aim was to approach large size male grizzly bears, exactly the opposite of what we were told in Denali National Park. There live about 2.200 bears in Katmai so you are guaranteed to see them. During the approach everyone walks in one line so that the bear doesn't see a whole group approaching him. The risks are minimal because we are a neutral element in this ecosystem. Each time the bear notices us, we stop and continue approaching him in a circle movement. We do this until we are at a distance of about 50 meters in an open field.

In case the bear would approach you, just stand still. If he would come too close or charge towards the group, you need to start shouting and clapping together. He will go away because he never attacks multiple preys together. If you start running or go backwards, you are in trouble. When the bear sees you as prey he could run up to a speed of 50 km an hour. We never came into a dangerous situation with bears and saw four male grizzlies from close by, all weighing above 600 kg. Hard to imagine that when they are born, they only weigh about half a kilo.

After a very wet hike of about three hours we returned to the floatplane. The whole hike we could see bears around us in the meadows. It was becoming very cold, heavy rain and wind made us soaking wet. The water stood high in our boots and there was no possibility to change clothing until after the flight. When you do this ensure that you have dry cloths in your car and not in your backpack.

We would return to Katmai National Park to see the bears fishing on salmon at the Brook Falls. In July this is the best place to see a large number of bears. We are extremely disappointed with the Dutch Tour Operator Askja and also Emerald Air service not taking us to that location instead. Like in many other places, we are of the opinion Aksja doesn't provide the right information to its travelers. A very poor service.

Flying CityJet Fokker 50 to London City airport, Rotterdam

The best way to fly from The Netherlands to London is from Rotterdam (The Hague) airport. For us the airport is close by, about 15km from our home and you arrive in London City Airport, close to the center of the UK capital. What more can you wish for.

We booked KLM but the flight was executed by CityJet with a Fokker 50 propeller plane. A nice experience to fly such a small propeller aircraft made by the former Dutch company Fokker. The sound is completely different and it flies slower. The trip is however short, just crossing the North Sea and you are in London.
