Spirit Houses of the Eklutna orthodox cemetery, Matsu Valley

This little cemetery belongs to a small Eskimo and Indian community in the Matsu Valley. It is almost like everyone is family from each other, it is such a closed orthodox community. The two small orthodox churches together with the cemetery have been named Eklutna Historic Park. You pay a small entry fee and the family guides you around. Reluctantly they also opened the church so that we could have a look. Before taking pictures it is best to request permission.

We absolutely wanted to visit this cemetery for its colorful wooden houses placed on the graves. They were smaller than we imagined but it was still an extraordinary experience. What is the story behind these Spirit Houses?

When a person dies, he is buried on the cemetery and the family puts a blanket over the soft ground. After a few weeks, they place a wooden house on top of it, paint in the colors of the tribe. The spirit of the deceased rises up from the grave and starts living in the house.

Dit kleine kerkhof behoort tot een Eskimo en Indianen gemeenschap in Matsu Valley. Het lijkt wel dat iedereen familie van elkaar is in deze beperkte orthodoxe kerkgemeenschap. De twee houten kerkjes samen met het kerkhof worden het Eklutna Historic Park genoemd. Je betaald een kleine inkom en een familielid geeft u een korte rondleiding. Met tegenzin worden de kerken ook geopend zodat bezoekers binnen kunnen kijken. Vooraleer foto's te nemen moet je toestemming vragen.

We hadden graag dit kerkhof bezocht omwille van de gekleurde houten huisjes die men op de graven plaatst. Ze waren echter kleiner dan verwacht maar het was nog steeds een buitengewone ervaring. Wat is het verhaal achter deze geestenhuizen? 

Als een persoon sterft, wordt hij begraven en de familie legt een deken over de vers omgewoelde grond. Na enkele weken wordt er een houten huisje over geplaatst en beschilderd in de kleuren van de stam. De geest en ziel van de overledene rijst uit het graf en gaat in het huisje wonen.

Cemetery de las Corts, Barcelona

Normally we would not have noticed this cemetery but in the middle there stood a beautiful chapel. We could see it from the street side but had to walk around the block to find the cemetery entrance.

It is a very special place. Some of the tombs are like little chapels or statues. We had never seen such walls in which coffins are stored in. Sometimes up to seven levels high. Relatives have to climb a ladder to put flowers in a small iron holder.

In the background you see the soccer stadium of F.C. Barcelona or the famous Camp Nou. We are sure the noise during matches can be very loud on the cemetery de las Corts. Happiness of life and silence of death so close by.

Normaal gingen we dit kerkhof niet gezien hebben maar in het midden stond een heel mooie kapel. We konden ze zien van aan de straatkant en dienen het volledige blok rond te lopen om de ingang van het kerkhof te vinden.

Het is een heel speciale plaats. Sommige graven lijken net kapellen of standbeelden. Het is voor het eerst dat we muren zien waarin men de lijkkisten schuift en bewaard. Soms wel zeven boven elkaar. Familieleden klimmen op een ladder om een bloemetje in een kleine ijzeren houder te plaatsen. 

Op de achtergrond zie je het voetbalstadium van F.C. Barcelona of het beroemde Camp Nou. We zijn er zeker van gedurende de matchen het gejuich sterk aanwezig is op het kerkhof van de las Corts. Blijdschap uit het leven en de stilte van de dood zo dicht bij elkaar.

Mausoleum General Eloy Alfaro Delgado, Montecristi

This is for sure the most impressive monument of Montecristi. The tomb of General Eloy Alfaro Delgado who was 22 years President of Ecuador He was the one responsible for holding together Ecuador and uniting the population of the different regions.

Next to the mausoleum you see a train because President Delgado built the railway system of Ecuador. His regime ended in 1911 when pro-catholic military took over the country. He spend his last year in jail after which he was killed in the streets of Panama by fanatics. The mausoleum has been constructed in Montecristi, the city in which Delgado was born. The tomb contains several statues and gold leave images carved into the walls.

Dit is zonder enige twijfel het meest indrukwekkende monument in Montecristi. Het graf van Generaal Eloy Alfaro Delgado die 22 jaar president was van Ecuador. Hij was verantwoordelijk voor het land samen te houden en de verschillende bevolkingsgroepen te herenigen. 

Naast het mausoleum zie je een trein want president Delgado is de pionier die de spoorwegen in Ecuador heeft geïntroduceerd. Zijn regime eindigde in 1911 met een pro katholieke staatsgreep. Zijn laatste levensjaar bracht hij door in een gevangenis waarna hij werd vermoord in de straten van Panama door een bende fanatiekelingen. Het mausoleum werd opgetrokken in Montecristi daar dit zijn geboortestad was. Het grafmonument bevat verschillende standbeelden en goudblad verwerkte gezichten in de muren.

Poconchile village and cemetery, a green valley in the desert

It is written with white stones on the mountain slope, welcome to Poconchile village. With this message the small community is greeting its visitors who stop for a refreshment or some food. From the higher roads you see clearly the green oasis of the Poconchile valey.

The church of this small village was destroyed by an earthquake and is currently being rebuild. This is a very long process. The most interesting is the cemetery. There are almost no tombstones and most of the graves are marked with a wooden cross. Even though this is a very dry region you see lots of flowers. At the back of the cemetery you find the oldest graves.

Het staat met witte stenen geschreven op de berghelling, welkom in Poconchile. Met deze boodschap groet de kleine gemeenschap bezoekers die stoppen voor een drankje of wat eten. Van op de hoger gelegen wegen zie je duidelijk de groene oase van het Poconchile dorp. 

Hun kerk werd vernietigd door een aardbeving en wordt momenteel herbouwd. Dit is een langdurig proces. Het meest interessante was het kerkhof. Er zijn bijna geen zerken en de meeste graven worden gemarkeerd met een houten kruis. Niet tegenstaande het een droog gebied is zie je hier veel bloemenkransen. Achterin op het kerkhof liggen de oudste graven.
