Santa Cova and wonderful trail, Monserrat

The Santa Cova is a small chapel covering a cave in the mountains of Montserrat. The half building constructed against the mountain wall looks very fragile. One big storm and it could be gone. This is the impression we got.

For us however the mountain walking trail is one of the best we have ever done. From the cathedral it takes you about 45 minutes to reach the chapel and a bit longer on the way back. Coming back is a lot tougher because it is uphill. We were surprised so many tourists were taking on this challenge. It is well worth it, the views and statues on the trail are amazing.

De Santa Cova is een kleine kapel die tegen een grot is aangebouwd in de bergen van Montserrat. Het halve gebouw staat tegen een bergwand en lijkt ons heel fragiel. Één grote storm en het kan weggeblazen worden. Dat is de impressie die het ons naliet. 

Voor ons is dit één van de mooiste bergwandelingen die we ooit hebben gemaakt. Vertrekkende aan de kathedraal, doe je er ongeveer 45 minuten over de kapel te bereiken. Terug wandelen is echter moeilijker daar het deze keer bergop is. We waren verrast dat vele toeristen deze uitdaging aangingen. Het loont zeker de moeite, de zichten en standbeelden langs het wandelpad zijn ongelooflijk.

The Virgin and Cathedral of Montserrat

The abbey village of Montserrat is located at a height of about 1200m. Left from the monastery and its cathedral you see the oval shaped rock formations of the Catalan highlands. From the Main Square you do not yet see the grandeur of the cathedral.

Once you reach the inner courtyard, the entrance of the cathedral becomes visible in all its glory. It is covered by statues and decorations. Inside the church it is a bit too dark but arches and the large art collection make up for this.

At the back, people are queuing to enter the chapel of the Virgin of Montserrat. She is a black saint and highly worshiped.

De kloosterstad van Montserrat is gelegen op een hoogte van ongeveer 1200m. Links van het gebouw en zijn kathedraal zie je de ovaal gevormde rotsformaties van het Catalaanse hooggebergte. Van op dit hoofdplein zie je nog niet de ingang van de kathedraal.

Eens op de binnenplaats van het klooster, wordt het inkomportaal zichtbaar. Deze glorieuze poort is bedolven met beelden en versieringen. Binnen in de kerk is het wat donker maar de sierbogen en kunstcollectie maken alles goed. 

Achteraan, wachten rijen mensen om de kapel te bezoeken. Hier staat het beeld van de Maagd van Montserrat. Een zwarte dame en heilige die aanbeden wordt.

Mountain views and General Impressions of Montserrat

Montserrat is an incredible town, high in the mountains of Catalunya. It was very difficult to find it on the GPS system but we managed. We left our car at the foot of the mountain and made our way up via a cable car.

This monastery and wine village is a unique setting with spectacular buildings and panoramic views. When you decide to go even higher, you are able to take a train to the peak of the mountain, something we really recommend.

Montserrat is een ongelooflijke stad in de Catalaanse bergen. Het was zeer moeilijk te vinden via GPS maar uiteindelijk slaagden we er toch in. Onze auto bleef achter aan de voet van de berg en een kabelbaan bracht ons naar boven. 

Deze klooster- en wijnstad is een unieke plaats met spectaculaire gebouwen en panoramische vergezichten. Als je beslist nog hoger te gaan, kan je een bergtrein nemen tot aan de bergtop, iets dat we zeker aanbevelen.
