We start our pictures with the white church towers and an excellent reflection of the church in a modern office building. We are not sure why but this picture really appeals to us.

Inside the church you have many altars and statues. The high walls behind the altar are fantastic with tall stained glass art works. It brings light and color into the church. Looking up, we see a bleu inner dome. Is this representing the sky or heaven?

We vangen aan met enkele foto's van witte kerktorens en een uitstekende reflectie van de kerk in een modern kantoorgebouw. We beseffen niet waarom, maar deze foto heeft voor ons een hoge aantrekkelijkheidswaarde. 

Binnen in de kerk staan er veel altaars en beelden. De hoge muren achter het altaar zijn opgetrokken met enorme sierramen. Het brengt licht en kleur binnen in de kerk. Naar boven kijkende, zie je een blauwe binnen koepel. Is dit een weerspiegeling van de blauwe lucht of de hemel?

National Library of Madrid with Rubens and Van Dyck

The main entrance of the library is enormous and looks almost like a Greek temple. The staircases, facade and triangular roof top contain many statues. On top of the building plays the wind with the Spanish colors.

We start with some pictures of Rubens and his students. A very interesting exhibition free to the public. Most of the paintings and drawings have a religious link. The second part of the museum showed visitors the evolution of printing books and the start of electronic storage devices. There were also a few pieces of art related to calligraphy.

De hoofdingang van de bibliotheek is enorm en lijkt wat op een Griekse tempel. De trappen, gevel en het driehoekige dak bevatten vele standbeelden. Boven op het gebouw wapperen de Spaanse kleuren in de wind. 

We vangen aan met enkele foto's van Rubens en zijn studenten. Een heel leuke tentoonstelling gratis aangeboden aan het publiek. De meeste schilderijen en tekeningen hebben een religieuze toets. Het tweede deel van het museum richt zich op de geschiedenis van de boekdrukkunst en elektronische dataopslag. Er waren ook enkele calligrafie kunstwerken.

Cafe El Espejo wintergarden, Madrid

This coffee house and restaurant is located in a pergola green house, a so called wintergarten. It looks rather old but the sign above the entrance indicates 1990. It is strange to see such a construction in a warm city as Madrid. We would expect this more in northern Europe. The exterior has nice decorations, mosaic tiles and paintings. Inside the bar is an eye catcher and we also liked the stained glass.

Deze taverne en restaurant worden uitgebaat in een pergola veranda, een zogenaamde wintertuin. Het ziet er wel oud uit maar het bordje boven de inkom leest 1990. Het is raar hier in het warme zonnige Madrid zo'n constructie te zien. We zouden dit eerder verwachten in noord Europa. De buitenzijde is rijkelijk versierd met mozaïeken tegeltjes en schilderwerken. Binnen is de bar een pronkstuk en we waren ook verrast door het brandglas.

Modern tower architecture at Plaza Colon, Madrid

There are a few interesting statues and monuments on the Plaza Colon square in the center of Madrid. In the design of the square we like the water ponds which reflect glimpses of buildings around it. Sometimes people and birds make the water reflection even more special.

Located on the corner of Plaza Colon is the National Library. A very nice building worth a visit. They also hold temporary exhibitions which are free to the public. The most impressive building at Plaza Colon was however the modern brown glass tower with green roof. An amazing office building which makes a statement.

Er zijn enkele interessante standbeelden en monumenten te bezichtigen op Plaza Colon in het centrum van Madrid. In het ontwerp van het plein, houden we van de waterelementen die voorbijgangers glimpen geven van gebouwen rondom. De reflecties van vogels en mensen maken het nog specialer. 

Op de hoek van het plein vind je de Nationale Bibliotheek. Een heel mooi gebouw dat zeker een bezoekje waard is. Tijdelijke tentoonstellingen zijn er soms gratis te bezoeken. Het meest indrukwekkende gebouw op Plaza Colon is voor ons echter het bruine glazen kantorencomplex met groen dak. Het laat een sterke indruk na.

Hotel Crowne Plaza Madrid Airport

We went to Madrid for a weekend and stayed in the Crowne Plaza hotel near the airport. It is a simple hotel but has excellent beds and showers. Breakfast and dinner were of good price quality.

From and to Barajas airport, the hotel offers a free shuttle. This is also convenient if you wish to explore the city and take the metro from the airport. Taxi's in Madrid are expensive in this provides you a cheap solution without renting a car. We can recommend this hotel for a city trip.

Tijdens onze weekend uitstap naar Madrid verbleven we het Crowne Plaza hotel bij de luchthaven. Het is een eenvoudig hotel met uitstekende bedden en douche. Het ontbijt en avondeten waren van goede prijskwaliteit. 

Van en naar Barajas luchthaven biedt het hotel gratis shuttles aan. Dit is tevens een goede manier om de stad te bezoeken, je neemt gewoon de metro van op het luchtveld. Taxi's zijn duur in Madrid en deze shuttle in combinatie met metro biedt u een goedkope oplossing zonder een auto te huren. We kunnen dit hotel aanbevelen voor een citytrip.
