The small village and lake of Lecco, Italy

It was hard to find a parking place in Lecco but we managed to get rid of our rented car outside the village. We had to walk a few kilometers alongside the lake. This was refreshing, the wind and water provided a cool breeze.

In the village, kids were feeding swans on the edge of the lake. The water is crystal clear but very cold. We enjoyed the views and the mountains and decided to have lunch on a nice elevated terrace on a hill, overlooking the lake.

Het was niet eenvoudig een parkeerplaats voor onze auto in Lecco te vinden maar we geraakten hem kwijt iets buiten het dorp. We dienen echter wel enkele kilometers terug te wandelen langs het meer. De combinatie van zon, wind en water was echt verfrissend. 

In het dorp waren er enkele kinderen, zwanen aan de rand van het meer, te voederen. Het water is kristalhelder en koud. We genoten van de bergzichten en besloten te lunchen op één van de hoger gelegen terrassen met zicht op het meer.

Brunate Funicular and its views from the lighthouse, Como

One of the best attractions of Como is the Brunate Funicular. A small steep train takes you to a hill, 700m above the lake. Once on the top, you have very nice views over the city and there is a small church with fabulous wall paintings. The church is called Andrea Apostolo.

For the active hikers among you, go for the walk to the Faro Voltiano lighthouse. It is still a long climb of 1,5km but the views are well worth it. Don’t doubt, just do it.

Een van de leukste bezienswaardigheden in Como is de Brunate kabelbaan. Een klein treintje neemt je mee op de heuvel tot 700 meter boven het meer. Eens boven heb je heel mooie zichten over de stad en het meer. Hier vind je ook de Andrea Apostolo kerk met zijn fantastische fresco’s. 

Voor de actieve wandelaars onder jullie, raden we aan om nog 1,5km verder te klimmen naar de Faro Voltiano vuurtoren. De zichten zijn het waard, gewoon doen.

The Virgin of Quito from the El Panecillo Hill

Quito is located on a height of about 3.000 meters. From the El Panecillo Hill next to the Virgin statue, we look down to the capital. You see the two towers of the cathedral, colored houses and the mountains in the background. More than 2 million people live in Quito and some districts are challenging, like many capitals in South American. We would recommend to be careful for pickpockets. In the city center we were always accompanied by a security guard.

We start our hike on the El Panecillo trails to see the 45 meter high aluminum Virgin from different angles. Ecuadorians claim this is the only Virgin statue in the world with wings from an angel. We were impressed.

When returning to the top, we saw a primitive house where the father was doing the laundry together with his kids. His girl stood on the roof to have running water from a plastic tube. It makes you realise, we have nothing to complain about.

Quito ligt op een hoogte van ongeveer 3.000m. Van op de El Panecillo heuvel naast het standbeeld van de Heilige Maagd, kijken we neer op de hoofdstad. Je ziet de twee torens van de kathedraal, gekleurde huizen en de bergen op de achtergrond. Er wonen hier meer als twee miljoen mensen en in sommige wijken moet je wel voorzichtig zijn, net als in vele Zuid-Amerikaanse steden. In het stadscentrum werden we altijd begeleid door een beveiligingsagent. 

We maakten een wandeling op de El Panecillo wandelpaden om de 45 meter hoge aluminium Maagd van verschillende uitval hoeken te kunnen zien. De Ecuadoranen beweren dat dit het enige Maagd standbeeld is ter wereld met engelen vleugels. We waren onder de indruk. 

Toen we terug naar boven klommen, zagen we een primitief huisje waar een vader samen met zijn kinderen kleding waste. Het meisje stond op het dak met een waterslang om stromend water te simuleren. Het maakt u bewust dat wij geen reden tot klagen hebben.

Top Wallbergbahn hike at Tegernsee

When you like hiking, the Wallbergbahn up to a height of about 1.600m could be something for you. You can visit the mountain top with a cable car and book a return ticket. We decided to use the support to get to the top and return hiking. Don’t underestimate it, it took us around 3,5 hours and you really feel your legs the days after. We had a dance competition four days later and were lucky it was not a day earlier.

The views at the chapel were amazing. On our way down we saw the lake in the valley. We didn’t see many other hikers which made us relax in the nature. Occasionally we met some alp cows. A top hike on mountain slopes and woods.

Als je van natuurwandelingen houdt is de Wallbergbahn op een hoogte van ongeveer 1.600 meter misschien wel iets voor jou. Je kan ook de bergtop bezoeken met de kabellift via een return ticket. Wij besloten ons naar boven te laten brengen met de lift en we gingen wandelend terug naar beneden. Je mag dit echter niet onderschatten, het nam ongeveer 3,5 uur in beslag en je voelt krampen in je benen voor dagen. Wij hadden vier dagen later een danscompetitie en hadden geluk dat het geen dag eerder plaatsvond. 

De zichten aan de bergkapel waren ongelooflijk. Tijdens de afdaling zagen we het meer in de vallei. Er waren bijna geen andere wandelaars wat ons ontspande in de natuur. Af en toe zagen we zelfs enkele alpenkoeien. Een top wandeling op bergpaadjes en in de bossen.
