The tomb of Christoffel Columbus in the Cathedral of Sevilla

That this is one of the largest churches in the world is clear as soon as you enter. The arched ceilings are so high that you are intimidated. How did they ever build such a construction more than five centuries ago?

Facing the mid ship and wall in front of us, we see a giant organ. At first sight we thought there was a mirror because we saw two organs. It was not a visual effect; there are really two giant organs around the fabulous wooden carved choir. Other interesting pieces of art in the church are a silver altar, wooden altars, a silver fresco wall and many beautiful paintings.

At the end of our tour we see four big men in ancient soldier uniform carry a coffin. These are the remains of Christoffel Columbus. Many countries and churches claim to have remains of this Spanish adventurer who discovered the new world but in Sevilla it is scientifically verified. Columbus is here, at least a part.

Dat dit één van de grootste kerken ter wereld is wordt duidelijk van zodra je binnen gaat. De booggewelven zijn zo hoog dat je wordt geïntimideerd. Hoe hebben ze dit ooit opgetrokken meer dan vijf eeuwen geleden?

Kijkende naar het middenschip en de muur voor ons zien we een enorm orgel. Eerst dachten we dat er een spiegelreflectie was want we zagen er in feite twee. Beide reuze orgels stonden er echt tegen het in hout gekerfde koor. Andere interessante kunstvoorwerpen in de kerk zijn het zilveren altaar, houten altaars, een zilveren fresco muur en vele mooie schilderijen. 

Aan het eind van onze tour stonden vier soldaten in antieke uniformen. Op hun schouders rust een kist. Dit zijn de overblijfselen van Christoffel Columbus. Vele plaatsen en kerken beweren ze een graf van deze Spaanse ontdekker van de Nieuwe Wereld te hebben maar hier in Sevilla is dit wetenschappelijk gecontroleerd. Columbus is hier, althans een stukje van hem.

The New Church with the "Lange Jan" tower and Abbey of Middelburg

The church tower of 91 metres high is the symbol of Middelburg. You see the emperor's crown on the top of Lange Jan from many place in town. The crown is yellow and decorated with giant white balls which look like pearls. This crown is our favourite monument of the city.

The New Church to which the Lange Jan tower is connected is modest. It a mainly used as a choir and one of the walls is decorated with a bleu/white drawing. The organ is fabulous.

Since 900 years, you find an abbey in Middelburg. Most likely this is one of the biggest abbey complexes we have seen. After the first part of our visit we relax a bit in the inner court garden.

De 91 meter hoge kerktoren "Lange Jan" is het symbool van Middelburg. Op de top zie je de gele keizerlijke kroon versiert met grote witte bollen die parels voorstellen. De toren is zichtbaar van op vele plaatsen in de stad en is ons favoriete monument.

De Nieuwe Kerk tegen dewelke Lange Jan is aangebouwd is zeer eenvoudig. Het is een koorkerk en een van de muren is versierd met een grote gewaagde wit blauwe tekening. Het orgel is gewoon verbluffend. 

Reeds 900 jaar staat er een abdij in Middelburg. Waarschijnlijk is dit de grootste abdij dat we ooit hebben gezien. Na ons bezoek komen we wat tot rust in de heerlijke binnentuin.

Robust walls and a modern organ in the cathedral of Monaco

Our pictures of this cathedral are a bit weak; we were so disappointed in the weather in Monaco that we almost didn’t see the beauty of this cathedral. The whole day it was poring, our legs were completely wet and we carried an umbrella around on our holiday. Long live the nice weather at the Cote d’Azur.

The cathedral is small but the façade holds marvellous details. The inside of the building looks a lot taller, probably the intension of the architect. Make something look big although it is small. The painting on the inner dome ceiling is fantastic. The most impressive was a modern organ; the blue shine was just perfect. It took me probably ten attempts to make a sharp picture, the light was very difficult. This is also the church were you find the Royal graves of Prince Renier II and Princess Gracia.

Onze foto’s van de kathedraal zijn een beetje zwakjes, we waren zo teleurgesteld in het weer in Monaco dat we de schoonheid van deze kerk bijna niet zagen. Het was de hele dag aan het gieten, onze benen waren volledig nat geregend en we sleurden een paraplu mee op onze vakantie. Lang leve het goede weer aan de Cote d’Azur. 

De kathedraal is klein maar de gevel bevat super mooie details. De binnenkant van de kerk lijkt heel wat hoger, waarschijnlijk de intentie van de architect. Laat iets groot uitschijnen dat in feite klein is. Het schilderwerk aan op de koepel is fantastisch. Het meest indrukwekkende was echter het moderne orgel, het blauwe schijnsel was gewoon perfect. Het heeft me waarschijnlijk tien pogingen gekost om een scherpe foto te maken, het licht was heel moeilijk. In deze kerk vind je ook de Koninklijke graven van Prins Renier II en Princes Gracia..

A yellow white church in the hills, Katarina Kyrka in Stockholm

Talking about strange colours for a church, yellow and white. It certainly makes it unique for a religious building. We had seen a picture of the Katarina Kyrka in a book and had to search hard to find it. It is somewhat hidden in the hills around Stockholm. Arriving at the church it started raining. Luckily we found shelter inside the church. The interior was white, with blank walls and almost no decorations. The organ looked beautiful and the altar was very special because it was supported by columns. It quickly stopped raining, we took some exterior pictures and continued our walk to the hotel. Unfortunately by the time we arrived at the hotel, we were soaking wet.

Over vreemde kleuren voor een kerk gesproken, wit en geel. Het maakt het zeker een uniek religieus gebouw. In een boekje over Stockholm hadden we een foto gezien van de Katarina Kyrka en begonnen we aan onze moeilijke zoektocht in de heuvels van Stockholm. Toen we er aankwamen begon het hevig te regenen en schuilden we in de kerk. De binnenkant was wit met kale muren en er waren bij geen versieringen. Het orgel was zeer mooi en het altaar ondersteunt door zuilen speciaal. Het hield snel op met regenen, we namen nog enkele foto’s en vervolgden onze weg naar het hotel. Pech gehad, tegen de tijd dat we aankwamen waren we door en door nat van de stortbuien..

The hidden treasures of the St. Mary’s church in Rostock

From the outside, the St. Mary’s church in Rostock doesn’t look exceptional. Even when you enter this church desperately in need of maintenance and renovation, we were not impressed with the walls and columns. The stained glass windows were very nice.

It is only when you walk further into the church you get confronted with its treasures. In the mid ship on the left side is a fantastic organ. We have never seen such a big organ, covering several floors and it even has a balcony with seats integrated into the organ. It was made in 1770 in the Baroque style and contains 5702 pipes.

Visitors should certainly walk behind the altar to see the Astronomic clock that was built in 1472. Like most of these clocks you can read the signs of the Zodiac and positions of the moon and sun on it. These types of clocks are exceptional, certainly when they are so old and it is the first time we see one in a church.

Van aan de buitenzijde, lijkt de Sint Mariakerk in Rostock niets bijzonders. Zelfs als je de kerk binnen gaat zie je onmiddellijk de nood aan onderhoud en renovatie. We waren niet onder de indruk van de staat van de zuilen en muren. De sierramen waren wel heel mooi. 

Het wordt heel interessant als je verder in de kerk gaat en wordt geconfronteerd met de verborgen schatten. In het middenschip aan de linkerzijde zie je een enorm orgel dat verschillende verdiepingen omvat. Een geïntegreerd deel van het enorme muziekinstrument is een balkon met zitplaatsen. Het orgel werd gemaakt in 1770 en bevat 5702 pijpen. 

Bezoekers moeten zeker achter het altaar doorwandelen waar een astronomische klok uit het jaar 1472 staat. Zoals de meeste van deze klokken kan je hierop de stand van de maan en zon lezen alsook de elementen van de dierenriem. Deze klokken zijn al uitzonderlijk en zeker als ze zo oud zijn. Het was de eerste keer dat we zo’n klok in een kerk aantroffen..
