Celebrity Infinity sails out of Arica with a carnaval performance

Carnaval is very popular in Arica with more than 5.000 dancers. Just like in Rio de Janeiro, people dance and celebrate in honor of the sun, the main goal of the South American carnaval. We were surprised to see all these locals from Arica perform in the cruise port.

The captain incurred a delay because his passengers did not want to get on board. At the last moment the walking bridge was lifted on the ship and the carnaval performers still continued dancing and making music. Most passengers stayed on the balconies and on the main decks to wave goodbye to this colorful group.

The black bird on the docks had also many colors. It is the first time we encounter such a bird. Notice the indian like colors on its head, is it part of the carnaval? We certainly admire it. Goodbey Arica, we leave Chile behind us now.

Carnaval is heel populair in Arica met meer als 5.000 dansers. Net als in Rio de Janeiro vieren mensen ter ere van de zon, het hoofddoel van het zuid Amerikaanse carnaval. We waren verrast deze groepen te zien optreden in de haven.

De kapitein vertrok met wat vertraging daar zijn passagiers terughoudend aan boord kwamen. Op het allerlaatste moment werd de passagiersbrug opgetakeld terwijl het carnaval in volle ornaat verder ging. Men bleef dansen en muziek maken. De meeste passagiers stonden dan ook op hun balkon of op het open dek om deze kleurrijke mensen vaarwel te zwaaien. 

De zwarte vogel op de kaai had ook vele kleuren op zijn kop. Het is de eerste keer dat we zo'n indiaan vogel zien. Maakt hij deel uit van het carnaval? Je kan het enkel bewonderen. Vaarwel Arica, we verlaten Chile voor heel lange tijd.

The masks of Venice to celebrate carnival and now decoration in our living room

When we say carnival, we think of cities like Aalst (Belgium), Köln (Germany), Rotterdam (The Netherlands), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), the Caribbean and also Venice (Italy). Probably the Venice carnival is one of the most traditional in the world. Look back in to history at masked parties and you see similar carnival masks as the ones they sell in Venice.

Many of the cruise ships departing in Venice have a masked ball at night. Both men and women wear small masks to cover their faces, eyes and cheekes. The masks of Venice are real pieces of art and you find them in almost every shop. For us it is the most distinct product of this Italian city.

For centuries Venetians were wearing masks for several months a year. They loved disguise themselves. It is hard to imagine how many different kind of masks there are but the pictures give you an idea. We bought two and Kristel tried them on. Now they hang on our living room wall.

Als we over carnaval spreken denken we aan steden zoals Aalst (België), Keulen (Duitsland), Rotterdam (Nederland), Rio de Janeiro (Brazilië), de Carabbien en Venetië (Italië). Waarschijnlijk is het carnaval in Venetië het meest traditionele in de wereld. De maskers van de meeste historisch gemaskerde ballen lijken heel sterk op de exemplaren die in Venetië worden gemaakt en verkocht.

Op de vertrekkende cruise schepen worden er ’s avond dan ook regelmatig een gemaskerd bal georganiseerd. Zowel de mannen en vrouwen verbergen hun gezicht, ogen of kaken achter een elegant masker. Het zijn echte kunstwerken en je kan ze overal kopen. Voor ons is dit een typisch product voor deze Italiaanse stad. 

Eeuwen lang droegen inwoners van Venetië maskers gedurende verschillende maanden per jaar. Ze hielden er gewoon van zich te vermommen en de grote verscheidenheid op de foto’s geven u een idee van de omvang. We kochten er twee en Kristel probeerde ze uit. Nu hangen ze trots aan onze woonkamermuur.

Pretty in pink: the colour topic of the month

Visiting blogs of my blogrol, I see many people who publish something in pink. It is the topic of the first of September and I have already seen excellent cars, flowers and flamingos. Our small contribution is a pretty tropical lady during the summer carnaval in Rotterdam. In pink off course. At 6 o’clock this evening you can expect our Top Commentator article, we didn’t forget.

Bij het bekijken van onze blogrol, zie ik dat veel mensen iets publiceren in het roze. Roos is dan ook het onderwerp van de eerste september en ik zag reeds mooie auto’s, bloemen en flamingo's. Onze kleine bijdrage is een mooie tropische vrouw tijdens het zomercarnaval te Rotterdam. In het roze natuurlijk. Vanavond, 18:00 stipt publiceren we ons maandoverzicht artikel met top commentators, we zijn het niet vergeten.

The old box: Occidental Fun Club, Puerto Plata in 1998

We decided to occasionally publish a picture from at least a decade ago and share an experience from a different era. A week ago, we posted an article about the summer carnival in Rotterdam and when I saw the picture below, well, there it is carnival every day.

The picture was taken in 1998, about 15 years ago. I had more hair, big glasses and a large moustache. In those days, this seemed normal to me. How strange. We stayed in the Occidental Gran Hotel Playa Dorada in Puerto Plata on the Dominican Republic. What I remember is the entertainment, discos and of course the cocktails.

During that holiday, I was for the first time confronted with real dancing, the salsa, merengue, batchacha and mambo. In the disco, all people performed like professional dancers. One year later, I took up dancing in Belgium.

We hebben besloten af en toe enkele foto’s te publiceren die minimum tien jaar oud zijn en onze ervaringen uit een ander tijdperk te delen. Een week geleden hebben we een artikel over het zomercarnaval van Rotterdam geschreven. Toen ik de foto hieronder terug vond, dacht ik, daar is het iedere dag carnaval. 

De foto werd genomen in 1998, ongeveer 15 jaar geleden. Ik had nog meer haar op mijn hoofd en onder de neus. Mijn vrouw vindt zo’n grote bril lelijk en van een schuurborstel onder de neus wil ze ook niets weten. Ik verbleef in het Occidental Gran Hotel Playa Dorada in Puerto Plata op de Dominicaanse Republiek. Wat ik er mij herinner is het entertainment, de discotheken en natuurlijk de Cocktails. 

Tijdens die vakantie werd ik voor de eerste keer geconfronteerd met echt dansen, de salsa, merengue, batchacha en mambo. In de discotheek leek iedereen wel een professionele danser. Een jaar later nam ik ook het dansen op in België..

The first pictures of summer carnival in Rotterdam, “Zomercarnaval 2013”

For years, I have been planning to go to the summer carnival of Rotterdam. Today was the highlight of the week with the Street Parade. The samba queen of the year 2013, Ms. Kim Geurtsen opens the parade and dances in front of the 2.000 people and groups participating. The street circuit that the parade follows in about 6,5km long and everyone joins in with the festivities.

We went by public transport because there were almost one million visitors in the Dutch metro pole. The theme this year is “Dance till you drop”. It is hard to imagine that this event was 25 years ago only celebrated by a few hundred people. It is already recognised as one of the top three events of The Netherlands. We knew that the carnival in the Dutch Caribbean was very popular but here in Rotterdam it takes on extreme proportions. We were lucky it didn’t rain and hope you will like the pictures of the 2013 summer carnival of Rotterdam. I must be one of the people who publish the first pictures of “Het Zomercarnaval 2013” from Rotterdam.

Reeds jaren willen we naar het Zomercarnaval van Rotterdam gaan. Vandaag was het hoogtepunt van de week met de Straat Parade. De Samba koningin van 2013, Kim Geurtsen opent de parade en danst voor de 2.000 deelnemers en groepen uit. Het stratenparcours is ongeveer 6,5km lang en iedereen viert mee. 

We gingen er naar toe met het openbaar vervoer want er waren bijna één miljoen bezoekers in de stad. Het thema van het jaar is “Dance till you drop”. Het is moeilijk te geloven maar dit begon allemaal 25 jaar geleden met enkele honderden feestvierders. Nu is het reeds erkend als een top drie evenement op nationaal niveau. We wisten dat carnaval op de Nederlandse Antillen zeer populair was maar hier in Rotterdam neemt het extreme proporties aan. We hadden geluk dat het niet regende en hopen dat je de foto’s van het 2013 Zomercarnaval leuk vind. Ik moet wel een van de eersten zijn die foto’s publiceert van het Zomercarnaval 2013, het is net gedaan..
