Saphir Cup 2016 – WDSF Senior I Standard, Paris

This weekend we danced the WDSF Senior I Standard in Paris, a very good competition organised by Marc Couderc. We were surprised of the large number spectators, the venue grandstand was completely full. International competitors coming from all over Europe were cheered on by the crowd.

In our first round we could execute our main attention points and brought a quality aligned with our technical skill level. Since we started dancing intensively again since October, our physical shape is improving. The judges marked us 37 times out of 45 to qualify for the semi-final.

In the semi-final we were happy with our performance and ended the competition on place 11. With this result we climbed a few places on the World Ranking to place 78.

Our 15th year wedding anniversary

We are now married for 15 years and still in love. Time to compare some pictures. The left one was taken on our wedding day and the right one this year. My hair is gone but Kristel is still there.

Podium of the Belgian Championship Senior I Standard 2015

There are very few dance couples in Belgium which is a pity. On the contrary the level of the couples is excellent. In the highest Senior I Standard category only three couples could qualify for the 2015 Championship. We knew beforehand that the other two couples were better but nevertheless we tried to compete to the best of our abilities.

We are very happy with our performance but couldn’t for the first time this year take any markings from the top two. The 2014 Champions Robrecht Krikilion and Nadia Schepens lost all dances to Jean-Hugues Henneghien and Eun Sook Scherf, the new champions. We were marked third in all dances and can only admire the skills and dedication these couples show on a daily basis.

WDSF Senior I Standard – our Woodenshoe 2015 videos, Noordhoek

Yesterday we danced the WDSF Senior I Standard Woodenshoe in Noordhoek. The event took place in a church. It is always nice to dance in a special location. Thank you to Hans van der Zanden for recording our dances. It provides us good learning opportunities and memories for on the blog.

The recording are of the first round in which we dances up to a very good level. Our redance was even better and we progressed to the quarter final. Just like in Cambrils we end on place 13 with 12 coupes going to the semi-final. We were however very pleased with the dancing and the ranking out of 24 participating international couples. Hope you enjoy the videos of the Tango, Viennese Waltz, Slowfox and Quickstep.

Gisteren dansten we de WDSF Senior I standaard Woodenshoe in Noordhoek.

Dancing at the Costa Dorada, Cambrils

This weekend we were at the Costa Dorada to dance in a Senior I open standard world ranking and watch the European Championship Adults Standard. We had a great time and four out of our five dances were of good quality. We had hopes to progress to the semifinal but unfortunately we became 13th with 12 couples going through.

Currently we have a World Ranking position of 80 but because we didn't make this semifinal we will probably drop a few more places. The level of the European Championship was however spectacular and we watched all dances.

BDSF competition St. Michel in Ham, Senior I Standard

Last Sunday we danced a national competition in Ham. After our dance weekend in Marseille, Filip got a heavy cold. The whole week he went to work while being sick. There was no other possibility. In these circumstances, we couldn’t even practice once. Being registered for this competition, we decided to participate although our strength was low.

There were only two couples present in the highest class. We and Henneghien-Scherf, they are currently ranked 2nd on the Belgian Ranking, we are 3rd. The difference in dance quality this weekend was however enormous we got 3 first places, they got 22. Let’s hope we do better during the Belgian Championship in May.

WDSF Senior I Standard – Dance Sport Cup Malta

Last weekend we were in Malta for our third World Ranking competition, only 7 couples registered so it was a direct final. The participants came from Germany, Italy, Slovakia and Belgium. From the couples who already had 6 WDSF results, the lowest ranked couple was number 67 in the world. The others were higher. On paper we should end on the 7th place, which also materialised.

We had to do all five dances in a row and this was hard. Nevertheless we were pleased with our dancing and won the English Waltz from number 67 in the world. We end in 7th place overall but the adjudicators did not put us last each time.

These were the placings we received:
- 1 third place
- 2 fourth places
- 9 fifth places
- 10 sixth places
 - 23 seventh places

After this competition we enter the top 200 of the WDSF World Ranking at place 193. It will take a while to improve this position because our next international tournament will be in Cambrils (Spain) on 19 April.

Wijchen Swingt 2012 – Part 2 – Videos B-class first round and The Swing Dancers

As mentioned yesterday, below you find the video of our dancing in the B-class competition Ballroom Dancing in Wijchen. We selected the first round because there were 14 couples together on the floor. It gives you an idea how busy it can be and difficult to avoid hitting each other. Sometimes it is hard, people could fall or hit another couple. It would not be the first time someone is knocked down.

The second video shows a summary of “The Swing Dancers” who gave a demonstration. It is a group of 101 young people between 5 and 18 years old. This proves that dancing is also cool for kids and teens.

We are publishing again after a period intense travelling

For a period of almost two weeks it was impossible to publish any article due to intense travelling and very slow and expensive internet at sea. We have however written a lot and will publish in the coming weeks more articles than usual.

Long waiting lines at the Eiffel Tower, Paris

The Eiffel Tower is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Europe. Some claim it is the monument that is photographed the most in the world. This iron tower of 324 metres high was built in 1889 for the world exposition in Paris. If you go to Paris for the first time, you have to visit the Eiffel Tower and that's what many people do. On this sunny day the waiting lines were very long. To have a good view, we recommend a walk from the Military School towards the Eiffel Tower. When the a sun shines, you can relax on the green grass fields or enjoy the walk. Undoutedly, the top attraction of Paris.

Citroën showroom on the Champs-Elysées, Paris

The least you can say about the Citroën showroom on the Champs-Elysées in Paris is that it is spectacular. Here they literally pile up the cars in a type of giant cylinder. They also have a racing section with a top model for rally racing. The Redbul colours on the car are flashy. One of the special cars in the showroom is the half-track Kégresse P19 from 1931. They invented rear-wheel drive power. They used the cars for expeditions in several continents and the Himalayas. To me it looks fragile, but that is probably normal for an 80 year old car.

The glory of Bavaria, Siegestor Munich

The “Siegestor” or the victory arch is located on the Ludwigstrasse very close to the beautiful Ludwigs church. Nice to visit both place of interest in one go. The monument was erected in 1852 for the glory of Bavaria and to honour the Bavarian army. The statue on the top of the monument displays Bavaria with her fighting lions. The sculptures in the walls and the finishing of the columns are on a detailed and high quality standard. Like many of the Munich historical buildings, they are restored and properly maintained. Standing in front of the victory arch, facing the city centre, you can shoot a picture of the Siegestor together with the “Theatinerkirche” and the famous city hall belfry. Munich is a city full of excellent photo opportunities, it is only a pity it was rather cloudy that day.

Net zoals zo vele andere gerestaureerde historische gebouwen in München blijft men aandacht geven aan onderhoud.

St. Benedikt church in Munich, a modern touch

As a semi active blog writer, I always keep my eyes open for interesting buildings or places to take a picture and write a short article about. Early morning, on my way from the hotel to work, I see a church in a side street half covered in the sun. Since I write frequently about churches I took this opportunity to have a quick look. The St. Benedikt church was constructed in 1881 by Mr. Marggraf. The church facade looks modern because it was reconstructed in 1951, 7 years after the bombing during the Second World War. When you enter the church you see a modern painting on the left side of the altar. I don't know the artist but it I certainly liked it. It could be in honour of the Priest Rupert Mayer, who was a leading member of the German resistance during the Second World War. A small but nice church.

Let's Dance Championships 2011 - Amstelveen

The Let's Dance Championships in Amstelveen was for us the first competition in theNADB C-Class. We expected a strong field in this town and we were right. Our dancing was up to our standards but we end in place 12 from 13 couples. We dislike the result but were happy with our dancing. It shows we will have to work hard to perform in this new class. We are looking forward to the next competition in Cuijck on 25 April, Easter Monday.

The Van der Valk Hotel and Restaurant chain in The Netherlands stands for quality at a reasonable price. We always enjoy visiting their restaurants. In Vianen, the restaurant is colourful, modern and has a nice summer terrace. As in most Van der Valk restaurants, we prefer the starters, they have many combination plates. The food presentation is good as you can see on the pictures. A place we can recommend.

Promotion to the NADB C-Class, Limburg Danst 2011

"Limburg Danst” is always a very pleasant competition. This year we were even more looking forward to this competition because we only needed 1 more point for promotion to the C-Class. In our endurance to promote on points instead of finals, we had already reached 18 finals in this Class. The first round and the semi-final went according or expectations, we directly qualified and reached the final. We knew that 4 couples would get promotion points so the 4th place was our goal. We didn’t dance as well as in the first two rounds. We got blocked in the English Walz and made 2 mistakes during the Tango. The Slow fox and the Quickstep went very well. The Final was over, there was nothing more we could do to influence the result. Only wait and hope it was good enough to get the point. During the price presentation the 6th and 5th place were announced and our relief was high. We got our promotion to the C-Class. Against our expectations we win the competition and this for the 3rd time in de row. We could not wish for a better result and will compete for the first time in the C-Class in Amstelveen. We would like to thank Herman and Michele Lak for the excellent support and lessons, without them this would not be possible. We love dancing for the Love2Move team and this has contributed to our results.
