Podium of the Belgian Championship Senior I Standard 2015

There are very few dance couples in Belgium which is a pity. On the contrary the level of the couples is excellent. In the highest Senior I Standard category only three couples could qualify for the 2015 Championship. We knew beforehand that the other two couples were better but nevertheless we tried to compete to the best of our abilities.

We are very happy with our performance but couldn’t for the first time this year take any markings from the top two. The 2014 Champions Robrecht Krikilion and Nadia Schepens lost all dances to Jean-Hugues Henneghien and Eun Sook Scherf, the new champions. We were marked third in all dances and can only admire the skills and dedication these couples show on a daily basis.

Er zijn heel weinig dansparen in België wat spijtig is. In tegenstelling is het niveau van de paren uitstekend. In de hoogste klasse Senior I standaard konden slechts drie koppels zich kwalificeren voor het 2015 kampioenschap. We wisten vooraf dat de andere twee paren beter als ons waren maar niet tegenstaande deden we alles binnen onze mogelijkheden om zo goed mogelijk te presteren. 

We waren wel tevreden met ons dansen maar konden voor de eerste keer dit jaar geen markeringen van de top twee paren afnemen. De kampioenen van 2014, Robrecht Krikilion en Nadia Schepens verloren alle dansen van Jean-Hugues Henneghien en Eun Sook Scherf, de nieuwe 2015 kampioenen. Na het krijgen van alle derde plaatsen kunnen we enkel vol lof kijken naar hun vaardigheden en de dagelijkse toewijding van deze dansparen.

BDSF competition St. Michel in Ham, Senior I Standard

Last Sunday we danced a national competition in Ham. After our dance weekend in Marseille, Filip got a heavy cold. The whole week he went to work while being sick. There was no other possibility. In these circumstances, we couldn’t even practice once. Being registered for this competition, we decided to participate although our strength was low.

There were only two couples present in the highest class. We and Henneghien-Scherf, they are currently ranked 2nd on the Belgian Ranking, we are 3rd. The difference in dance quality this weekend was however enormous we got 3 first places, they got 22. Let’s hope we do better during the Belgian Championship in May.

Vorige zondag dansten we een nationale competitie in Ham. Na ons dansweekend in Marseille, kreeg Filip een zware verkoudheid. De hele week moest hij werken terwijl hij ziek was. Er was gewoon geen andere mogelijkheid. In deze omstandigheden hebben we zelfs niet één keer kunnen trainen. Daar we toch ingeschreven waren voor deze wedstrijd besloten we toch deel te nemen niet tegenstaande onze krachten op waren. 

Er waren slechts twee koppels aanwezig in de hoogste klasse. Wij en Henneghien-Scherf, zij staan momenteel 2de op de Belgische ranking, wij 3de. Het verschil in danskwaliteit was dit weekend enorm, we kregen enkel 3 eerste plaatsen, onze tegenstanders 22. Laat ons hopen dat we het veel beter doen op het Belgisch Kampioenschap.

National BDSF Preselection Senior I Standard – DancePoint in Deurne

Last Sunday we danced a BDSF Preselection to qualify for the Belgian Championship in May 2015. This will happen automatically if we are able to participate in four qualifying competitions. We are however also focusing on the Belgian Ranking on which we are currently in position six. Let’s see where we end in the first half of 2015 because this was our last Belgian competition for 2014.

This week we had several practice sessions working on long term improvement of musicality and movement on the floor. We were pleased with the application of these techniques during the competition in Deurne. Our end result was place four out of four. The field was just very strong. Below you see a few pictures taken by Rob Ronda.

Vorige zondag dansten we een BDSF Preselectie ter kwalificatie van de Belgische Kampioenschappen in mei 2015. Dit zal automatisch gebeuren als we aan vier wedstrijden deelnemen, we willen echter ook hogerop geraken in de Belgische Ranking waar we momenteel plaats zes innemen. Laat ons zien waar we staan na de eerste helft van 2015 want dit was onze laatste BDSF wedstrijd van 2014. 

Deze week hebben we enkele keren getraind op onze lange termijn verbetering in muzikaliteit en beweging op de dansvloer. We waren tevreden met de toepassing van deze elementen tijdens de wedstrijd in Deurne. We eindigen op plaats vier van vier. Het veld was gewoon heel sterk. Winning the Belgium Championship Standard Ballroom Dancing Senior I B

Many dance couples close their competitive season with a highlight on the Belgium Championship or get a signal they need to train harder to achieve the expected results. This is one of the events you work and live towards. The BDSF federation as well as the Dansliga were organizing this Championship together for the first time which is most likely a big challenge. As dancers we were very pleased with the selection of the adjudicators: all seven juries came from different countries.

The morning sessions started with Novice competitions in the Latin. We still remember lively how stressed you can be as unexperienced competitor. We danced our first round Senior I B standard around noon and the final one hour later. As experienced dancers we had no stress, everything was executed as planned and we won all five dances. Our first Belgium Federation Championship title is a fact.

The public was very supportive and cheered during the finals and honor dances. We were impressed with the level of the winner of Senior I A Standard, Junior A Latin, Senior II A Latin en Adults A Latin competitions. Also the other competitors danced well. After the price presentation, the Belgium Champions Wheel Chair dancing, Elien & Greet Bervoets, gave a demo. Unfortunately we had to leave before the second block of the Belgium Championship in the evening but are convinced it was also of a high standard. We are already looking forward to next year.

Voor veel dansparen is het Belgisch Kampioenschap het hoogtepunt van het jaar, hier traint men voor en leeft men naar toe. Voor sommigen wordt op deze dag het dansseizoen bekroont en anderen krijgen het signaal harder te werken. De BDSF en Dansliga organiseerden voor het eerst een Kampioenschap samen wat waarschijnlijk ook een grote uitdaging was. Als dansers waren we heel tevreden met de samenstelling van de jury: zeven juryleden uit zeven verschillende landen. Dit kunnen we enkel toejuichen voor toekomstige wedstrijden.

De ochtend begon met Debutanten wedstrijden in de Latin, we kunnen ons nog goed inbeelden hoe zenuwachtig je kan zijn als aanvangend kompetitiepaar. Wij dansten onze eerste ronde Senior I B Standaard tegen de middag en de finale een uurtje later. Als geroutineerde dansers hadden we geen stress, alles ging zoals gewenst en we wonnen alle dansen in onze klasse. Onze eerste Bondskampioenschap titel is binnen. 

De sfeer in de zaal was uitstekend. Het publiek ging uit zijn dak tijdens de finales en ere dansen. We waren sterk onder de indruk van de winnaars van de Senior I A Standaard, Junior A Latin, Senior II A Latin en Adults A Latin. Ook de andere koppels hebben heel verdienstelijk gedanst. Na de prijsuitreiking gaven de Belgische Kampioenen Rolstoeldansen Elien & Greet Bervoets nog een demonstratie. 

Voor het tweede deel van het Kampioenschap konden we helaas niet blijven maar we zijn er van overtuigd dat het van even hoogstaande kwaliteit was. We kijken al uit naar volgend jaar.

BDSF – DansLiga – Senior I Ballroom Competition organised by MkM Bocholt

It was more than two months ago that we danced a Ballroom competition. We just were to busy at work and traveled through Latin America for about 5 weeks. During this period we continued practicing but on an extremely small floor. It was almost 7 weeks ago we danced our programs and we knew this competition was going to be a challenge.

The first round was not so good. We danced in the highest Belgian national class with 7 couples and Filip kept on mixing up his routines. As a consequence, the dance quality was not as it should be. On top of that we missed physical strength; we have to work again on our condition. This will be improved soon now that we are back competing.

Our performance was a lot better in the Final. We were pleased with the floor craft, the routines were more respected and the frame was more stable. Given the circumstances, we have to accept the quality of our performance. Next week we should perform better in the WDSF of Cambrils (Spain).

We end the competition in fourth place. All three couples in front of us were of a higher level. This is the competition result of the Senior I standard, between brackets the current World Ranking (WR) for each couple:

Het was meer dan twee maanden geleden dat we nog een Ballroom competitie gedanst hebben. Het was gewoon te druk op het werk en we reisden door Zuid-Amerika voor ongeveer 5 weken. Gedurende deze tijd hebben we wel verder getraind maar op een extreem kleine vloer. Het was 7 weken geleden dat we nog onze volledige routines hadden gedanst en wisten dat deze wedstrijd een uitdaging ging worden.

De eerste ronde was niet zo goed. We namen deel in de hoogste Belgische klasse met 7 paren en Filip had problemen met de volgorde van de routines. Als gevolg was de danskwaliteit lager dan verwacht. Daar bovenop misten we de fysieke kracht, we dienen terug te werken aan onze conditie. Dat zal echter snel verbeteren daar we terug intensief trainen en wedstrijden dansen.

Onze prestatie was beter in de Finale. We waren blij met onze floor craft, de routines werden meer gerespecteerd en ons kader was veel stabieler. Gezien de omstandigheden moeten we de kwaliteit van onze uitvoering aanvaarden. Volgende week verwachten we verbetering in Cambrils, Spanje. 

We eindigen de competitie op de vierde plaats. De drie paren voor ons hadden een beter niveau. Dit is de uitslag van de Senior I standaard, tussen de haakjes zie je de Wereldranking positie van ieder koppel: (zie boven)

Terpischore BDSF Ballroom Competition Senior I Standard, Nalinnes

This was our fifth national competition in Belgium and we now collected half of the promotion points to join the Championship class. It was the first time we danced in “La Wallonie”, the French speaking part of the country. It was a small dance floor and the competitions seem to be less popular. Due to the low number of participating couples, we danced together with the Championship class.

Our first round could have been better. Kristel was complaning about my stability in the arms. The second round and final was more stable and we became third out of four couples. You would think this is a poor result but it was in line with the expectations. The winners were Slawek Lukawczyk & Edna Klein, the previous World Champions and the numer two were Robrecht Krilillion & Nadia Schepens, the reigning Belgian Champions. Easy to say it was a small but high quality field.

Next week we dance a WDSF World Open Competition in Antwerp. We against the world, with more than 20 countries participating in the Senior I. I could only describe it as going back to school, learn a lot and try to do your best. We are looking forward to the “Antwerp Diamond Cup”.

Dit was onze vijfde nationale competitie in België en we hebben nu de helft van de promotiepunten verzameld voor de Hoofdklasse. Het was echter de eerste keer dat we dansten in Wallonië, het Franstalige gedeelte van het land. De dansvloer was klein en de wedstrijd leek niet zo populair. Vanwege het lage aantal deelnemende paren konden we samen met de hoofdklasse dansen.

Onze eerste ronde kon toch wat beter. Kristel was niet tevreden over de stabiliteit van onze armen. De tweede ronde was beter, meer stabiel en we werden derde van vier paren. Je zou denken dat dit een slecht resultaat is maar het lag binnen het verwachtingspatroon. De winnaars waren Slawek Lukawczyk & Edna Klein, de voormalige Wereld Kampioenen en de nummer twee, Robrecht Krilillion & Nadia Schepens, de regerende Belgische Kampioenen. Eenvoudig te besluiten dat het een klein maar sterk veld was. 

Volgende week dansen we een WDSF World Open wedstrijd in Antwerpen. Wij tegen de rest van de wereld, met meer als 20 deelnemende landen in de Senioren I. Je kan het omschrijven als terug naar school gaan, veel leren en je best doen. We kijken al uit naar de “Antwerp Diamond Cup”.

BDSF Ritmo Studio’s Grand Prix in Hasselt – Winning Senior I B Standard

This is our fourth national competition in Belgium and in the first three ones we danced in a combined series with the A highest class. Evaluating our dance level, we requested the Belgian Dance Sport Federation (BDSF) to start in the highest class but this was refused. After showing good results in three national competitions, beating number 3, 4, 5 and 6 of the Belgium ranking (we did not face number 2 yet) and winning the English Waltz from the Belgium Champions we filed a new request to be entered in the A-class.

For unknown reasons to us, this was again refused by the BDSF and the federation added a statement in their letter that they are willing to review this request after the Belgium Championship in May. The conclusion is that they do not allow us to challenge the Belgium ranking and to our expectation to claim at least the bronze medal in the Belgium Championship.

The result of this competition was as expected, we were obliged to dance in a category below our technical level and won the competition easily with the maximum of first places, 25 out of 25. In the first round we also received the maximum markings. We became first from five participating couples but it is unpleasant for the other competitors who have to dance against us in this class.

Dit is onze vierde nationale competitie in België en in de eerste drie dansten we samen in een gecombineerde serie met de hoogste klasse, de A. Na evaluatie van ons dansniveau dienden we een aanvraag in te starten in de hoogste klasse maar dit werd geweigerd door de Belgische Danssport Federatie (BDSF). Na goede resultaten in drie nationale competities, waarbij we de nummer 3, 4, 5 en 6 van de Belgische Ranking hebben verslagen (we hebben nog niet tegen nr. 2 gedanst) en het winnen van de Engelse Wals tegen de Belgische Kampioenen, deden we opnieuw een verzoek om in de hoogste klasse ingeschreven te worden.

Voor redenen ons niet gekend werd dit tweede verzoek ook geweigerd door de BDSF samen met een verklaring: “De Raad is bereid deze aanvraag te herbekijken na de Belgische Kampioenschappen” in mei. De conclusie is dat men ons niet toelaat mee te dingen voor de Belgische Ranking en naar verwachting op zijn minst een bronzen medaille te behalen op het Belgisch Kampioenschap. 

Het resultaat van deze competitie lag binnen de verwachtingen, we werden verplicht te dansen in een klasse onder ons technisch niveau en wonnen de wedstrijd makkelijk met het maximum van eerste plaatsen, 25 op 25. In de voorronde kregen we ook het maximum van de crossen. We werden dus eerste van 5 paren maar het is echter niet zo leuk voor de andere deelnemers die tegen ons dansen in deze klasse.

Very good results in the BDSF Ballroom competition Senioren I in Ham

Yesterday we danced our third national ballroom competition of the season in Ham. This is one of the qualifications for the Belgian Championship in May 2014. Our first round was good and the adjudicators gave us 23 marks out of 25. We are very happy with this.

We are with 7 couples in the final and the quality is very high. We took a few technical points into account for our last round and worked hard on it. Most of our technical expectations materialised. We end the competition in 3rd place and are extremely happy with this result.

The first place went to Slawek Lukawczyk and Edna Klein the former World Champions and Blackpool winners. The second place went to Robrecht Krikilion and Nadia Schepens, the current Belgian Champions and number 31 in the World Ranking. We became third and even became 2nd in the English Waltz. For the first time we won against Paul Vanden Rul and Nini Kuypers, the number 96 in the World Ranking.

We are surprised we already get these results after returning to the competition floor since two months and are looking forward to the BDSF competition in Hasselt on 5 January. Below, we added a video of our presentation dance in the Final, the English Waltz.

Gisteren dansten we onze derde Nationale Ballroom wedstrijd van het seizoen te Ham. Dit is een van de preselectie wedstrijden voor het Belgisch Kampioenschap in mei 2014. Onze eerste ronde was goed en de jury gaf ons 23 plaatsingen (punten) op 25. Hier zijn we heel blij mee.

We waren met 7 paren in de finale en de kwaliteit was enorm hoog. We namen enkele technische elementen mee voor onze laatste ronde en werkten er hard aan. De meeste technische verwachtingen werden dan ook ingelost. We eindigen de competitie op de derde plaats en zijn ongelooflijk blij hiermee.

De eerste plaats ging naar Slawek Lukawczyk en Edna Klein, de voormalige Wereldkampioenen en Blackpool winnaars. De tweede plaats ging naar Robrecht Krikilion en Nadia Schepens, de huidige Belgische Kampioenen en nummer 31 op de Wereldranking. Wij werden derde en zelfs tweede in de Engelse Wals. Voor de eerste keer winnen de tegen Paul Vanden Rul en Nini Kuypers, het nummer 96 op de Wereldranking. 

Het is een verrassing dat we reeds deze resultaten halen na slechts twee maanden terug competitie te dansen en we kijken al uit naar de BDSF wedstrijd te Hasselt op 5 januari. Hieronder vind je een video van onze presentatiedans in de Finale, de Engelse Wals.

A good performance at BDSF Ballroom competition – Rose de Leyn, Brugge

In our second competition of the year which is part of our preparation for the 2014 season we were faced with a small but high quality field. There were only four couples in the Championship Class but some had name and fame.

We arrived a few hours early to get a feeling of the floor during one of the breaks. The size was just fine and we were set for the start. We danced two rounds and were pleased with our performance although we became 3rd out of 4 couples.

The winners of this competition were the Belgian Champions (Robrecht Krikilion and Nadia Schepens) who are placed number 37 on the world ranking. We didn’t come close, yet. The number two (Paul Vandenrul and Nini Kuypers – Nr. 94 on the World Ranking) also won against us last competition but this time it was a very close call. We won two dances and they three with the smallest difference. We can’t wait until the next encounter because we are closing the gap.

Tijdens onze tweede wedstrijd van het jaar dat deel uit maakt van de voorbereiding van het 2014 seizoen stonden we tegenover een klein deelnemersveld van hoge kwaliteit. Er waren slechts vier paren in de hoogste nationale klasse en sommigen hadden naam en faam. 

We waren reeds enkele uren voor onze starttijd van de partij om de dansvloer uit te testen tijdens een pauze. De grootte van de vloer was voldoende en het gevoel was redelijk, we zijn klaar voor de start. In beide ronden waren we tevreden over onze prestaties alhoewel we derde werden van vier paren. 

De winnaars van de wedstrijd waren de Belgische Kampioenen (Robrecht Krikilion en Nadia Schepens) die 37ste staan op de wereldranking. We kwamen niet in hun buurt, op dit moment. Het paar dat tweede werd (Paul Vandenrul en Nini Kuypers – Nr. 94 van de wereldranking) versloegen ons reeds vorige wedstrijd maar deze keer was het zeer nipt. Wij wonnen twee dansen en zij drie met het kleinste verschil. We kijken al uit naar de volgende ontmoeting want we komen dichterbij.

BDSF - Dansliga Retie: Success on our first Senior Ballroom Dancing competition

We were planning to start the Senior competitions from January 2014, in line with the WDSF rules (World Dance Sport Federation) when Kristel reaches the required age to attack the world ranking. The Belgium Federation decided to already apply these rule from September 2013, so we grabbed the opportunity to start three month earlier.

However, due to starting 3 months earlier, we had to intensify our training schedule in order to have some physical strength to compete. We are not in top form yet but for the next competition on November 3 in Brugge we will be better on all levels, as well physically and technically. It was about 8 months ago that we danced for the last competition so the tension was high.

The BDSF decided to let us start in the second highest class, the Senior I B. For this competition there were however no other couples in the B, so we had to start in a combined ABC class with four couples of the highest national class.

We gave it our best try. We took into account the last technical tips from our trainers and started the competition. It was a smaller floor than in The Netherlands, we had to dance five dances in a row and Filip had nerves. Nevertheless, we captured the second place from seven couples, beating 3 out of the four couples from the highest class. We are happy with the result and are positive for the competion in Brugge.

We waren van plan te starten bij de Senioren in januari 2014, in lijn met de WDSF (World Dance Sport Federation) reglementen, wanneer Kristel de vereiste leeftijd bereikt om de wereld ranking Senior I aan te vallen. De Belgische Federatie besloot echter de nieuwe regels reeds in september 2013 in te voegen. We grepen deze kans en begonnen drie maanden eerder dan gepland.

Door 3 maanden eerder te starten moesten we meer training sessies inlassen om toch een beetje onze conditie op te schroeven. We zijn nog niet in top vorm maar tegen de volgende competitie op 3 november in Brugge, zullen we op alle vlakken beter zijn. Zowel conditioneel als technisch. Het was 8 maanden geleden sinds we nog eens aan een wedstrijd deel genomen hebben dus de spanning was te snijden.

De BDSF besloot ons te laten starten in de tweede hoogste klasse Senior I B. Voor deze wedstrijd waren er echter geen paren in de B dus mochten in een gecombineerde klasse ABC dansen. Er waren 4 paren uit de hoogste nationale klasse aanwezig, een uitdaging. 

We deden ons best. Nog even de laatste tips van onze leraren doornemen en we begonnen er aan. De vloer was kleiner dan Nederland, we moesten vijf dansen op rij afwerken en Filip had heel veel zenuwen. Niettegenstaande deze beperkingen werden we tweede van zeven paren en versloegen we 3 van de vier A klasse paren. We zijn blij met het resultaat en kijken met een positieve instelling uit naar de wedstrijd in Brugge.

Disappointing result at the Benelux Championship 2012

The Benelux Championship was organised by MDC - BDSF in Antwerp this year. We consider the Benelux as one of the most important competitions of the year and were looking forward to a good result. The last few weeks we intensified our training and could see real quality improvement.

At the competition we were happy of our dancing but did not qualify for the second round. We were very surprised of this. In the redance round our quality and movement even improved but still not good enough to make it in the second round. Luckily next week at the Holland Masters we will have a new chance to achieve a better result. Our coach will be present next week to give feedback and tips during the competition.

Het Benelux Kampioenschap werd dit jaar georganiseerd door MDC-BDSF in Antwerpen. Wij aanschouwen het Benelux als één van de belangrijkste wedstrijden van het jaar en keken uit naar een goed resultaat. De laatste weken hebben we onze trainingsfrequenties verhoogt en was er wezenlijk vooruitgang geboekt in danskwaliteit. 

Op de competitie waren we blij van de dansen die we hebben gebracht maar werden niet geplaatst voor de tweede ronde. Dit verbaasde ons sterk. In de herkansing verbeterde onze kwaliteit en beweging maar het was nog steeds niet voldoende om te kwalificeren voor de volgende ronde. Gelukkig krijgen we volgende week een nieuwe kans op de Holland Masters en hopen we het daar beter te doen. Onze trainer zal volgende week aanwezig zijn om feedback en tips te geven gedurende de wedstrijd.

BDSF Ballroom competition in Ham, Belgium

This was our first BDSF (Belgium Dance sport Federation) competition since more than two years. We knew that these competitions always have a low number of participants and it was also the case this time. In our class, the CD adults, there were only two couples. We and Joeri Van der Veken & Banckaert Nina. Joeri and Nina won all ten dances, so we have to admit they were the better couple. We get 7 first places out of a possible 50. We will meet each other again in Hasselt in a few weeks time. We hope to improve our scores against them in that competition. Evaluating our own performance, we danced well and it was a good training. We are certainly not disappointed.

Na twee jaar was dit onze eerste BDSF (Belgische Danssport Federatie) competitie. We wisten dat deze wedstrijden weinig deelnemers hebben en dit was nu ook het geval. In onze klasse, de CD adults, waren we slechts met twee paren. Wijzelf en Joeri Van der Veken & Banckaert Nina. Joeri en Nina hebben alle tien dansen gewonnen en waren overtuigend beter dan ons. We kregen wel 7 eerste plaatsen op de totaal van 50. We gaan elkaar terug ontmoeten in Hasselt binnen enkele weken. We hopen dat we dan onze score tegen hen kunnen verbeteren. Uit onze zelfevaluatie concluderen we dat we goed gedanst hebben en het was een goede training. We zijn zeker niet ontgoochelt.
