WDSF Senior I Standard – Dance Sport Cup Malta

Last weekend we were in Malta for our third World Ranking competition, only 7 couples registered so it was a direct final. The participants came from Germany, Italy, Slovakia and Belgium. From the couples who already had 6 WDSF results, the lowest ranked couple was number 67 in the world. The others were higher. On paper we should end on the 7th place, which also materialised.

We had to do all five dances in a row and this was hard. Nevertheless we were pleased with our dancing and won the English Waltz from number 67 in the world. We end in 7th place overall but the adjudicators did not put us last each time.

These were the placings we received:
- 1 third place
- 2 fourth places
- 9 fifth places
- 10 sixth places
 - 23 seventh places

After this competition we enter the top 200 of the WDSF World Ranking at place 193. It will take a while to improve this position because our next international tournament will be in Cambrils (Spain) on 19 April.

Vorig weekend waren we in Malta voor ons derde wereldranking tornooi, slecht 7 paren schreven zich in dus was het een rechtstreekse finale. De deelnemende paren kwamen van Duitsland, Italië, Slovakije en België. Van alle paren die reeds 6 ranking competities gedanst hadden was het laagst gerangschikte koppel nummer 67 in de wereld. Op papier gingen we dus 7de worden en dit gebeurde dan ook. 

We dienden alle vijf dansen na elkaar te dansen en dit was hard. Niettegenstaande waren we tevreden met onze kwaliteit en wonnen we de Engelse Wals van het nummer 67 van de wereld. In de totale uitslag werden we 7de maar de jury plaatste ons niet altijd laatste. 

Dit waren onze plaatsingen: 
- 1 derde plaats 
- 2 vierde plaatse 
- 9 vijfde plaatsen 
- 10 zesde plaatsen 
- 23 zevende plaatsen 

 Na deze wedstrijd komen we de top 200 van de WDSF wereldranking binnen op plaats 193. Het zal nu wel een tijdje duren vooraleer we deze positie kunnen verbeteren want ons volgend internationaal tornooi is in Cambrils (Spanje) op 19 april.

Terpischore BDSF Ballroom Competition Senior I Standard, Nalinnes

This was our fifth national competition in Belgium and we now collected half of the promotion points to join the Championship class. It was the first time we danced in “La Wallonie”, the French speaking part of the country. It was a small dance floor and the competitions seem to be less popular. Due to the low number of participating couples, we danced together with the Championship class.

Our first round could have been better. Kristel was complaning about my stability in the arms. The second round and final was more stable and we became third out of four couples. You would think this is a poor result but it was in line with the expectations. The winners were Slawek Lukawczyk & Edna Klein, the previous World Champions and the numer two were Robrecht Krilillion & Nadia Schepens, the reigning Belgian Champions. Easy to say it was a small but high quality field.

Next week we dance a WDSF World Open Competition in Antwerp. We against the world, with more than 20 countries participating in the Senior I. I could only describe it as going back to school, learn a lot and try to do your best. We are looking forward to the “Antwerp Diamond Cup”.

Dit was onze vijfde nationale competitie in België en we hebben nu de helft van de promotiepunten verzameld voor de Hoofdklasse. Het was echter de eerste keer dat we dansten in Wallonië, het Franstalige gedeelte van het land. De dansvloer was klein en de wedstrijd leek niet zo populair. Vanwege het lage aantal deelnemende paren konden we samen met de hoofdklasse dansen.

Onze eerste ronde kon toch wat beter. Kristel was niet tevreden over de stabiliteit van onze armen. De tweede ronde was beter, meer stabiel en we werden derde van vier paren. Je zou denken dat dit een slecht resultaat is maar het lag binnen het verwachtingspatroon. De winnaars waren Slawek Lukawczyk & Edna Klein, de voormalige Wereld Kampioenen en de nummer twee, Robrecht Krilillion & Nadia Schepens, de regerende Belgische Kampioenen. Eenvoudig te besluiten dat het een klein maar sterk veld was. 

Volgende week dansen we een WDSF World Open wedstrijd in Antwerpen. Wij tegen de rest van de wereld, met meer als 20 deelnemende landen in de Senioren I. Je kan het omschrijven als terug naar school gaan, veel leren en je best doen. We kijken al uit naar de “Antwerp Diamond Cup”.

“Dens Gala International” Aalsmeer, a new victory on our competition list

Last Saturday we danced in Aalsmeer “Dens Gala International” in The Netherlands. In our category the Senior I A standard, we were with 10 couples and we won the competition. We were happy with our dominance on the floor, the end result and the quality of our Ballroom dancing.

This is a very popular event and became the best organised NADB competition of 2012. It was no surprise that there were many participants in all age classes. As a consequence you are in for a long evening and night. The more participants, the longer the evening will last. This year the event was organised in the dance training centre “CanDance Studio’s”, a fabulous place.

After our World open competition in Madrid, we learned a lot and applied these principles to this competition. In the first round we received 29 marking out of 35, which was very good. Since we didn’t have to redance, we had a break of four hours. We made sure to warm-up again before the semi-final around midnight. This also went well and we received 34 marking out of 35 for the final. Almost the maximum score and we were placed into the final as highest ranked couple.

Around 1:30 at night we danced our final. No, we were not tired; the adrenaline gave us a high energy level. We gave ourselves several focus points and they materialised in the final. We won all five dances and were super pleased even dough we only arrived home at 4:00 in the morning. Next week we dance in Nalinnes, a BDSF competition to qualify for the Belgian Championship.

Vorige zaterdag hebben we deelgenomen aan het “Dens Gala” te Aalsmeer in Nederland. In onze categorie, de Senioren I A Standaard wonnen we de wedstrijd in een veld van 10 paren. Onze dominantie op de dansvloer, het eindresultaat en de kwaliteit van ons Ballroom dansen stemde ons heel tevreden.

Dit populaire evenement werd in 2012 de NADB wedstrijd van het jaar. Het was dan ook geen verrassing dat er heel veel deelnemende paren aanwezig waren in bijna alle klassen. Hierdoor werd het wel een lange avond en nacht. Hoe meer deelnemers des te langer het duurt. Dit jaar werd het tornooi echter op een andere locatie georganiseerd in het danstrainingscentrum “CanDance Studio’s” te Aalsmeer.

Na onze World Open in Madrid, hebben we veel bijgeleerd en in deze wedstrijd toegepast. In de eerste ronde kregen we 29 crossen van de 35, wat heel goed is. Hierdoor dienden we geen herkansing te dansen en kregen we een pauze van 4 uur. Voor de start van de halve finale nog even goed opwarmen en alles zat goed, we werden als eerste geplaatst voor de finale met 34 crossen op 35, bijna het maximum. 

Omstreeks 1:30 ’s nachts begon onze finale. Nee, we waren niet moe, de adrenaline gaf ons de nodige energie. Alle aandachtspunten die we onszelf hadden opgelegd waren geslaagd. We wonnen alle vijf de dansen en waren heel blij, alhoewel we pas rond 4:00 ’s nachts thuis kwamen. Volgende week dansen we een preselectie voor het Belgisch Kampioenschap te Nalinnes.

Our first WDSF competition Senior I, Madrid

After a few good results in Belgian National Competitions and a good preparation, we are looking forward to our first WDSF competition in Madrid. You live towards it, when you book your flights and hotel. When the weekend approaches, the tension and eagerness to measure you with other international couples increases. The question is, how are we going to experience this?

Having fun both on and beside the dance floor is the most important element. We arrive two days before the actual competition and also want to visit the city. We are lucky to be executing our hobby and at the same time make a city trip.

How did our days look like? We took an evening flight after work on Friday and arrived late in the hotel. Luckily Spanish restaurants are open late. We dance on Sunday but the preparation starts Saturday morning. We check out the competition floor and practice area. During our morning training session we dance together with high level professional Evgeny Moshenin with Anna Oksengoyt en Steeve Gaudet with Marioara Cheptene. Immediately you try harder and produce your best possible quality. After practice we went to the swimming pool and the city centre.

Sunday, the day of our first WDSF Senior I competition. The first round is scheduled around 16:00 so we put in an other training session, swimming, sauna and a second training session. At 13:30 we have lunch and get ready for the competition. We still have a lot of work on make-up and hair. For a lady this takes longer than the man, so while Kristel finishes her hair, I collect our number. In which heat are we going to dance?

Just before the start of the first round, they put up the list of 24 registered couples who have to dance in two heats of 12. We dance all dances in the first heat except for the Viennese Waltz. Here we have to pay attention if you miss your heat, no markings possible.

The big moment has materialised, the start of the English Waltz and off we go. An other couple is already blocking us. It is incredably busy on the floor, everyone shows floorcraft and a high energy level. We get blown away and have no chance to dance our choreo. We have to dance small parts of our program and make use of the floor where there is enough room. Forget almost everything you have learned about dance direction around the floor. In the Tango we had similar problems.

The Viennese Waltz and Slowfox were a lot better. In these dances we had enough space for the majority of our program. During the Quickstep it became phyicallly very heavy and reduced the quality of our performance. Due to the adrenaline, we gave too much power and energy at the start of the dance.

Unfortunately no qualification to the second round and we end the competition in place 19 out of 24 couples. A hard reality check, our biggest weakness was the lack of international experience, we were intimidated by the other couples, the pressure was too high.

Was it a good decision to compete in this WDSF at our level? Yes. We learned a lot in these 10 minutes of dancing, something you can not grasp in a lesson or on national level competition. We are convinced we can do better and we don't fear a challenge. Our next WDSF competitions are already scheduled.

Na enkele goede resultaten in nationale wedstrijden in België en heel wat voorbereiding keken we uit naar onze eerste WDSF wedstrijd te Madrid. Je leeft er gewoon naar toe als je het hotel en de vluchten boekt. Naarmate de dag nadert stijgt de spanning en de drang om je op internationaal vlak met anderen te gaan meten. De grote vraag is hoe gaan we dit ervaren?

Het plezier komt voor ons op de eerste plaats. Zowel op als naast de dansvloer. We komen twee dagen voor de wedstrijd ter plaatse en gaan ook de stad bezoeken. Wat is er leuker dan je hobby uit te oefenen en te combineren met een city trip.

Hoe zag onze dagindeling er uit? Na het werk op vrijdagavond zijn we naar Madrid gevlogen met een late aankomst in het hotel. Gelukkig zijn de Spaanse restaurants lang open. We dansen op zondag maar zaterdag begon de voorbereiding, we gingen kijken hoe de vloer er uit zag en starten een vroege training. We zijn onmiddellijk onder de indruk want het niveau op de trainingsvloer is enorm hoog. Naast ons dansen Evgeny Moshenin met Anna Oksengoyt en Steeve Gaudet met Marioara Cheptene, twee heel goede professionals. Onmiddellijk ga je zelf ook een tandje bij zetten en je uiterste best doen tijdens de training. Daarna nog even het zwembad in voor we het stadscentrum bezoeken.

Zondag, de dag van de wedstrijd. De eerste ronde wordt gedanst rond 16:00 dus we hebben nog wat tijd voor een training, zwemmen, sauna en een tweede training. We besluiten rond 13:30 iets te eten en daarna ons klaar te maken voor de wedstrijd. Het vergt toch wel wat werk, make-up aanbrengen, haartooi en kledij. Voor een dame neemt dit meer tijd in beslag als voor de heer, dus terwijl Kristel de haartooi piekfijn afwerkt, haal ik ons rugnummer op. In welke heat gaan we dansen?

Vlak voor de aanvang van de eerste ronde wordt de definitieve lijst van deelnemers opgehangen, we zijn met 24 paren en dansen in twee heats. We dansen alles in de 1ste heat behalve de Weense Wals. Opletten dat we ons niet vergissen want dan kan je geen crossen krijgen.

De muziek van de Engelse Wals vangt aan, het grote moment is aangebroken, hier gaan we dan. We worden bij de aanvang reeds geblokkeerd. Wat is het druk op de vloer en iedereen beweegt zo groot en energiek. We worden gewoon overdonderd en hebben geen plaats om onze choreografie te dansen. Dan maar ontwijken en stukjes van het programma gebruiken. Vergeet bijna alles wat je hebt geleerd over dansrichtingen, je danst waar er plaats is. In de tango hadden we gelijkaardige problemen.

De Weense Wals en Slowfox gingen wel beter. Bij deze dansen hadden we het grootste deel genoeg ruimte voor ons programma uit te voeren. Tijdens de Quickstep werd het conditioneel heel zwaar waardoor alles wat zwakker werd. Door de adrenaline hadden we niet genoeg onze krachten gedoseerd. 

Spijtig genoeg geen kwalificatie naar de tweede ronde en we eindigen op plaats 19 van 24 paren. Een harde confrontatie, onze grootste tekortkoming was geen internationale danservaring te hebben, we zijn gewoon zwaar geïntimideerd geweest, de druk was te groot. 

Was het een goede beslissing op ons niveau deel te nemen aan deze wedstrijd? Het antwoord is ja. We hebben zo veel bijgeleerd in die 10 minuten dansen, dit leer je niet op een les of nationale wedstrijd. We zijn overtuigd dat we beter kunnen presteren en gaan de uitdagingen niet uit de weg. Onze volgende WDSF wedstrijden staan al op de planning.

BDSF Ritmo Studio’s Grand Prix in Hasselt – Winning Senior I B Standard

This is our fourth national competition in Belgium and in the first three ones we danced in a combined series with the A highest class. Evaluating our dance level, we requested the Belgian Dance Sport Federation (BDSF) to start in the highest class but this was refused. After showing good results in three national competitions, beating number 3, 4, 5 and 6 of the Belgium ranking (we did not face number 2 yet) and winning the English Waltz from the Belgium Champions we filed a new request to be entered in the A-class.

For unknown reasons to us, this was again refused by the BDSF and the federation added a statement in their letter that they are willing to review this request after the Belgium Championship in May. The conclusion is that they do not allow us to challenge the Belgium ranking and to our expectation to claim at least the bronze medal in the Belgium Championship.

The result of this competition was as expected, we were obliged to dance in a category below our technical level and won the competition easily with the maximum of first places, 25 out of 25. In the first round we also received the maximum markings. We became first from five participating couples but it is unpleasant for the other competitors who have to dance against us in this class.

Dit is onze vierde nationale competitie in België en in de eerste drie dansten we samen in een gecombineerde serie met de hoogste klasse, de A. Na evaluatie van ons dansniveau dienden we een aanvraag in te starten in de hoogste klasse maar dit werd geweigerd door de Belgische Danssport Federatie (BDSF). Na goede resultaten in drie nationale competities, waarbij we de nummer 3, 4, 5 en 6 van de Belgische Ranking hebben verslagen (we hebben nog niet tegen nr. 2 gedanst) en het winnen van de Engelse Wals tegen de Belgische Kampioenen, deden we opnieuw een verzoek om in de hoogste klasse ingeschreven te worden.

Voor redenen ons niet gekend werd dit tweede verzoek ook geweigerd door de BDSF samen met een verklaring: “De Raad is bereid deze aanvraag te herbekijken na de Belgische Kampioenschappen” in mei. De conclusie is dat men ons niet toelaat mee te dingen voor de Belgische Ranking en naar verwachting op zijn minst een bronzen medaille te behalen op het Belgisch Kampioenschap. 

Het resultaat van deze competitie lag binnen de verwachtingen, we werden verplicht te dansen in een klasse onder ons technisch niveau en wonnen de wedstrijd makkelijk met het maximum van eerste plaatsen, 25 op 25. In de voorronde kregen we ook het maximum van de crossen. We werden dus eerste van 5 paren maar het is echter niet zo leuk voor de andere deelnemers die tegen ons dansen in deze klasse.

Very good results in the BDSF Ballroom competition Senioren I in Ham

Yesterday we danced our third national ballroom competition of the season in Ham. This is one of the qualifications for the Belgian Championship in May 2014. Our first round was good and the adjudicators gave us 23 marks out of 25. We are very happy with this.

We are with 7 couples in the final and the quality is very high. We took a few technical points into account for our last round and worked hard on it. Most of our technical expectations materialised. We end the competition in 3rd place and are extremely happy with this result.

The first place went to Slawek Lukawczyk and Edna Klein the former World Champions and Blackpool winners. The second place went to Robrecht Krikilion and Nadia Schepens, the current Belgian Champions and number 31 in the World Ranking. We became third and even became 2nd in the English Waltz. For the first time we won against Paul Vanden Rul and Nini Kuypers, the number 96 in the World Ranking.

We are surprised we already get these results after returning to the competition floor since two months and are looking forward to the BDSF competition in Hasselt on 5 January. Below, we added a video of our presentation dance in the Final, the English Waltz.

Gisteren dansten we onze derde Nationale Ballroom wedstrijd van het seizoen te Ham. Dit is een van de preselectie wedstrijden voor het Belgisch Kampioenschap in mei 2014. Onze eerste ronde was goed en de jury gaf ons 23 plaatsingen (punten) op 25. Hier zijn we heel blij mee.

We waren met 7 paren in de finale en de kwaliteit was enorm hoog. We namen enkele technische elementen mee voor onze laatste ronde en werkten er hard aan. De meeste technische verwachtingen werden dan ook ingelost. We eindigen de competitie op de derde plaats en zijn ongelooflijk blij hiermee.

De eerste plaats ging naar Slawek Lukawczyk en Edna Klein, de voormalige Wereldkampioenen en Blackpool winnaars. De tweede plaats ging naar Robrecht Krikilion en Nadia Schepens, de huidige Belgische Kampioenen en nummer 31 op de Wereldranking. Wij werden derde en zelfs tweede in de Engelse Wals. Voor de eerste keer winnen de tegen Paul Vanden Rul en Nini Kuypers, het nummer 96 op de Wereldranking. 

Het is een verrassing dat we reeds deze resultaten halen na slechts twee maanden terug competitie te dansen en we kijken al uit naar de BDSF wedstrijd te Hasselt op 5 januari. Hieronder vind je een video van onze presentatiedans in de Finale, de Engelse Wals.

A good performance at BDSF Ballroom competition – Rose de Leyn, Brugge

In our second competition of the year which is part of our preparation for the 2014 season we were faced with a small but high quality field. There were only four couples in the Championship Class but some had name and fame.

We arrived a few hours early to get a feeling of the floor during one of the breaks. The size was just fine and we were set for the start. We danced two rounds and were pleased with our performance although we became 3rd out of 4 couples.

The winners of this competition were the Belgian Champions (Robrecht Krikilion and Nadia Schepens) who are placed number 37 on the world ranking. We didn’t come close, yet. The number two (Paul Vandenrul and Nini Kuypers – Nr. 94 on the World Ranking) also won against us last competition but this time it was a very close call. We won two dances and they three with the smallest difference. We can’t wait until the next encounter because we are closing the gap.

Tijdens onze tweede wedstrijd van het jaar dat deel uit maakt van de voorbereiding van het 2014 seizoen stonden we tegenover een klein deelnemersveld van hoge kwaliteit. Er waren slechts vier paren in de hoogste nationale klasse en sommigen hadden naam en faam. 

We waren reeds enkele uren voor onze starttijd van de partij om de dansvloer uit te testen tijdens een pauze. De grootte van de vloer was voldoende en het gevoel was redelijk, we zijn klaar voor de start. In beide ronden waren we tevreden over onze prestaties alhoewel we derde werden van vier paren. 

De winnaars van de wedstrijd waren de Belgische Kampioenen (Robrecht Krikilion en Nadia Schepens) die 37ste staan op de wereldranking. We kwamen niet in hun buurt, op dit moment. Het paar dat tweede werd (Paul Vandenrul en Nini Kuypers – Nr. 94 van de wereldranking) versloegen ons reeds vorige wedstrijd maar deze keer was het zeer nipt. Wij wonnen twee dansen en zij drie met het kleinste verschil. We kijken al uit naar de volgende ontmoeting want we komen dichterbij.
