Congress centre or the modern “Haus der Kulturen der Welt” in Berlin

This congress or event hall in the “Tiergarten” area of Berlin is a typical example of architecture which is way ahead for its time. The so called pregnant oyster, as the locals call the hall, is about 60 years old and still looks modern. We had the opportunity to take a look in the grand concert hall.

It is surrounded by a pond and beautiful gardens. On the foreground you see a wooden piece of art. We couldn’t find any information on it but it made an impression. Walking in the direction of the Reichstag, the Parliament of Germany, you find a high black marble clock tower, named the Carillon. It has a special appearance here in the middle of the park and I see no real functional use of this bell tower.

Deze congres- en evenementenhal in het “Tiergarten” gebied van Berlijn is een typisch voorbeeld van moderne architectuur die zijn tijd ver voor was. De zogenaamde zwangere oester, zoals de Berlijners dit bouwwerk noemen is ongeveer 60 jaar oud en lijkt nog steeds modern. We hadden tevens de mogelijkheid de concerthal binnen te gaan bekijken. 

Het is omringt door een vijver en mooi aangelegde tuinen. Op de voorgrond zie je een houten kunst constructie. Ik kon er geen verdere informatie hier over vinden maar het liet toch een indruk na. Als je verder wandelt in de richting van de Reichstag, het Duitse parlement, zie je een hoge zwart marmeren toren, de Carillon genaamd. Het is een bijzonder aanblik deze hier te vinden in het midden van het park en ik vraag me af wat de functionele waarde van deze klokkentoren is..

Scala and the Kolacny Brothers in Stadsschouwburg Leuven

On rare occasions, we attend a concert but were very pleased to have selected a performance of Scala and the Kolacny Brothers. This is a choir bringing a mix between classical and modern music. The girls’ choir has more than 200 members and the Kolacny Brother perform internationally. They became very popular in the USA after the movie “Social Network” for which they did the trailer music. Below I have added YouTube fragments of a modern song “I Fail” together with Regi and “Creep” from the “Social Network” movie. Hope you enjoy it. The building of the Stadsschouwburg was also impressive as you see on the pictures.

Af en toe gaan we eens naar een concert en zijn we zeer blij dat we een voorstelling van Scala en de Kolacny Brothers hebben gekozen. Dit is een koor die een mix tussen klassieke en moderne muziek brengt. Het vrouwenkoor heeft reeds meer als 200 leden en treden internationaal op. Ze werden zeer populair in de Verenigde Staten na de film “ The Social Network” waar zij de muziek voor de trailer hebben gemaakt. Ik heb enkele YouTube fragmenten toegevoegd om u een indruk te geven. Een modern lied, “I Fail” met Regi en “Creep” van de film “Social Network”. Ik hoop dat je het leuk vind. Het gebouw van de Stadsschouwburg was ook indrukwekkend zoals je ziet op de foto’s..

Support the St. Michiels church in Leuven

The "St. Michielskerk" in Leuven is very beautiful but in need for renovation. The church doesn't get enough funds from the Heritage foundation "Monumentenzorg" and because of that the refurbishing will take a lot longer. Most likely around 25 years. During my visit I met a friendly elder who explained a bit the history. Regularly there is still a mass but the church is also used for exhibitions, concerts and other events. An overview of the events can be found on their website. The AMC Brass Band playing movie soundtracks (13 July) or the Youth orchestra of London (27 August) are performing during the summer period. We are certainly going to one of the two concerts.

De "St. Michielskerk" in Leuven is zeer mooi maar is dringend toe aan renovatie. De kerk krijgt niet genoeg steun van "Monumentenzorg" en daardoor gaat de restauratie heel wat langer duren, waarschijnlijk meer dan 25 jaren. Gedurende mijn bezoek heb ik gesproken met een kerkvrijwilliger die me wat van de kerkgeschiedenis vertelde. Er zijn nog regelmatig missen maar de kerk wordt ook gebruikt voor tentoonstellingen, concerten en andere evenementen. Een overzicht van de evenementen kan worden teruggevonden op hun website. Op 13 juli speelt de AMC Brass Band filmmuziek en op 27 augustus geeft de "Youth orchestra of London" een concert. We gaan zeker 1 van de 2 concerten bezoeken..

Legends in Concert at Harrahs, Las Vegas

A friend in Las Vegas took us to the Legends in Concert show at Harrahs. At first we were a bit sceptical and our expectations were rather low. Totally unjustified, the show was very professional and the artists, well they all were great. Each show features different artists, in our show we saw: Elvis (Matt Lewis), Tom Jones (Steve McCoy), Elton John (Mitch Adams), Aretha Franklin (Denita Asberry) and Tim McGraw (Chad Givens). Most shows in Vegas are very expensive but this one has a fair price. Don't doubt, we are sure you will enjoy it.

Een vriend in Las Vegas nam ons mee naar the Legends in Concert show in het Harrahs hotel. Eerst waren we wat sceptisch en de verwachtingen lagen een beetje laag. Dit was totaal onterecht, de show was zeer professioneel en de artiesten uitstekend. Iedere show heeft verschillende artiesten, in onze voorstelling zagen we: Elvis (Matt Lewis), Tom Jones (Steve McCoy), Elton John (Mitch Adams), Aretha Franklin (Denita Asberry) and Tim McGraw (Chad Givens). De meeste shows in Las Vegas zijn zeer duur maar deze was correct geprijsd. Twijfel niet, we zijn er zeker van dat je het top zal vinden.
