Plaza del Congreso, the middle of Buenos Aires

The Plaza del Congreso is the home of the National Congress of Argentina. It is located in the middle of the city or the zero kilometer mark. This large open space is in fact a small park, the green heart of the Monserrat district with many pigeons.

The parliament or congress building is covering a complete side of the rectangular square. It is very big and looks nice with all the blue white Argentinian flags. Most of the sculptures were created by a Belgian artist named Jules Lagae. The building as well as the Neptune’s fountain in front of it were protected by fences and police. The next day the Argentinian President was going to hold a speech, so security was extremely tight.

In general the Plaza del Congreso is marvelous and is surrounded by impressive buildings. Some mansions have tower rooms and one house looks like an old black windmill hotel coming straight out of a horror movie. Kristel always says that my imagination knows no limits.

Het Plaza del Congreso is de thuishaven van het Argentijns Parlement. Het is gelegen in het midden van de stad op de nul kilometer lijn. Deze grote open vlakte is in feite een klein park, het groene hart van de Monserrat wijk met vele duiven.

Het parlement- of congresgebouw neemt een volledige zijde van het rechthoekige plein in beslag. Het is heel groot en ziet er goed uit met zijn blauw witte Argentijnse vlaggen. De meeste beeldhouwwerken werden ontworpen door de Belgische kunstenaar Jules Lagae. Het gebouw alsook de Neptunus fontein, die er voor ligt, waren afgesloten met hekken en beschermd door de politie. De volgende dag ging de President hier een toespraak houden, de beveiliging was nu reeds duidelijk zichtbaar. 

In het algemeen is Plaza del Congreso prachtig en omringt door indrukwekkende gebouwen. Sommige herenhuizen hebben torenkamers en één bepaald huis heeft de uitstraling van een oude zwarte windmolen die rechtstreeks uit een griezelfilm lijkt te komen. Kristel meent dat mijn verbeelding geen grenzen kent.

Pigeons taking a bath in the Plaza de España fountains, Madrid

Plaza España is located at the end of Gran Via and can easily be reached by metro. We walked from Puerta Sol through the shopping streets and alongside the theaters of Gran Via. Arriving you are confronted with two very large but stylish buildings. Both Torre de Madrid and Edificio España were built in the late 1950's and are still a landmark. With the new modern districts of Madrid they are no longer the tallest buildings of the city.

In the middle of Plaza de España stands the Cervantes Monument in honor of one of the most important Spanish authors, Miguel de Cervantes. He wrote the tales of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza. Large bronze statues of these two characters stand in front of the writer's column. For interested tourists you also have a souvenir market.

In one of the smaller fountains there was a group of pigeons taking a bath. It was fascinating to see the pigeons shaking their feathers, opening their wings, rolling in the water and walking in the fountain. After taking many pictures, I add two good ones to this post.

Plaza España is gelegen aan het einde van Gran Via en kan gemakkelijk worden bereikt met de metro. Wij hebben echter gewandeld van Puerta Sol door de winkelstraten en langs de theaters van Gran Via. Als je er aankomt wordt je geconfronteerd met twee grote torengebouwen, zowel de Torre de Madrid als de Edificio España werden gebouwd aan het einde van de vijftiger jaren en zijn nog steeds een icoon. Met de nieuwe moderne districten van de Spaanse hoofdstad zijn ze echter niet langer de hoogste wolkenkrabbers.

In het midden van Plaza España staat het monument ter ere van Miguel de Cervantes, een belangrijke Spaanse schrijver. Hij is de geestelijke vader van Don Quixote en Sancho Panza. Van beide figuren staat een enorm bronzen beeld voor het Cervantes Monument. De houten blokhutjes vormen een souvenir markt voor toeristen. 

In één van de kleinere fonteinen waren een groepje duiven aan het baden. Het was heel fascinerend te zien hoe zij hun veren schudden, vleugels openen, in het water rollen en wandelen in de fontein. Na het trekken van vele foto's voeg ik er twee redelijke aan deze blog toe.

The New Mosque or Yeni Camii in Eminönü, Istanbul

When we discovered the name of the mosque we thought this was a new building but it was completed in 1663, so 350 years old. For new countries like the USA and Australia, is 350 years almost impossible, for Istanbul it is new. Funny.

Connected to the construction are two giant minarets and the roof of the mosque has countless small domes and some really impressive ones, architect Mustafa Aga did an excellent job. The bazaar around the mosque was originally a school.

Looking at the domes from the inside is unbelievable. Mosaics come in many colours like blue, pink and green. We see again a similar dome construction as the Hagia Sophia with four half domes to support one complete dome in the middle.

As you can see it is very busy in the New Mosque during praying times. The men stand in front of the main hall under the big chandelier. At the entrance you see a little, two floor construction, most likely for the more important visitors and the person who sings the prayers.

At this mosque you find many pigeons. The city allows them to be here and even sells food for them. Probably they want to create a setting like on the San Marco Square in Venice. For us this is one of the most impressive buildings of Istanbul and again a very friendly community. Here disappears all prejudice of the western world instantly. Thank you.

Toen we de naam van deze moskee ontdekten dachten we dat dit een relatief jonge moskee was, maar ze werd voltooid in 1663, dus 350 jaar oud. Voor nieuwe landen zoals de Verenigde Staten en Australië, is een 350 jaar oud gebouw bijna onmogelijk, in Istanboel noemen ze dit nieuw. Hoe grappig.

Op de constructie zijn twee enorme minaretten gebouwd en het dak bestaat uit ontelbare klein koepels rondom enkele grote, architect Mustafa Aga heeft uitstekend werk geleverd. De bazaar rond de moskee was vroeger een school.

Vol ongeloof kijken we naar de binnenzijde van de koepels. De mozaïeken zijn heel kleurrijk met voornamelijk blauw, roze en groen. We zien een soortgelijke koepel opbouw als bij de Hagia Sophia met vier halve koepels die de hoofdkoepel in het midden ondersteunen.

Gedurende de gebedstijden is het zeer druk in de Nieuwe Moskee. De mannen staan vooraan in de hal onder een grote luster. Bij de ingang zie je een klein tempeltje bestaande uit twee verdiepingen, waarschijnlijk voor de belangrijke bezoekers en de zanger van de gebeden. 

Rond de Yani Camii vliegen heel veel duiven. De stad stimuleert dit en verkoopt zelfs voedsel om de duiven hier te houden. Waarschijnlijk wil men een sfeer creëren zoals op het San Marco plein in Venetië. Voor ons is dit een van de mooiste gebouwen van Istanboel en de mensen in de moskee waren heel vriendelijk. Hier verdwijnen alle vooroordelen van de westerse wereld. Bedankt..

General Impressions of the city centre of San Juan, Puerto Rico

The city of San Juan is a collection of colourful houses and fantastic architecture. If you would take away the palm trees, you could convince people that you are in an old European city. In one of the more narrow streets we find a garage with a painting of a men carrying a Puerto Rican cloth, it is simple but made an impression.

In several spots around the city we are confronted with hundreds of pigeons. Some locals attract pigeons with food and help tourists to take pictures. In return from a small contribution, they will try a lot to provide you with the best possible shots. The facades of houses show many details but be careful to look where you step. The city was built on a hill. Kristel exaggerated a bit in the gym during the morning and she had a hard time climbing the steep streets. The result is a slim body but you don’t get it for free.

De stad San Juan is een verzameling van kleurrijke huizen en fantastische architectuur. Als je de palmbomen wegdenkt, kan je mensen overtuigen dat dit een oude Europese stad is. In één van de smalle straatjes vinden we een garage met schilderwerk van een man die een Puerto Ricaans symbool omhoog houdt, het is eenvoudig maar maakt indruk. 

Op verschillende plaatsen worden we geconfronteerd met honderden duiven. Sommige inwoners lokken de duiven met eten en helpen toeristen bij het maken van de meest onmogelijke foto’s. Voor een kleine bijdrage doen ze alles om voor je de beste shots te maken. De gevels zijn rijkelijk bezet met details maar pas op waar je stapt. De stad werd gebouwd op een heuvel. Kristel had die ochtend wat overdreven in de fitness met de cross trainer en de steile beklimmingen waren toch zwaar voor de onder druk staande spieren. Het resultaat is echter een slank atletisch lichaam, maar dat krijg je niet gratis..
