Driving through the Casablanca wine region of Chile

Chile together with Argentina are the two largest wine exporters of South America. Both countries are from the so called "New World". Chilean wine in particular has become very popular in Europe and the quality is improving year by year. Compared to the French wine, Chile offers excellent price quality products. Don't hesitate to try and compare.

Our wine cellar contains a wide range of Chilean wines and in particular we like the Louis Felipe Edwards house which offers many grape varieties like Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabarnet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Carmenere and Malbec. We particularly like the LFE900 Malbec but quality comes with a price even when the wine originates from Chile. It is an excellent wine house and also bigger five star hotel chains like the Mandarin Oriental start working with this brand.

The Casablanca region can be found between Valparaiso and the capital, Santiago de Chile. The landscape and mountains on our drive are amazing and our guide explained why this is such a good wine region. During the day temperature is rising and the vineyards receive sun light all day long. At night it becomes cold. These seem to be ideal circumstances.

Plaza Sotomayor and the Naval Headquarters, Valparaiso

This square is one of the landmarks of Valparaiso with buildings of the Port Authorities and the Naval Headquarters. The Navy building is called Armada de Chile, which in facts means navy. It is about 100 years old and contains blue and grey marble. The decorations make this an exceptional building which has a dominant place on Plaza Sotomayor.

In the middle of the square you find a monument for the Navy Captain Artura Prat, who died in the naval Battle of Iquique. His ship the Esmeralda was sunk by the Peruvians. He is one of the most commemorated heroes of Chile with statues, ships, squares, streets, universities and even his portrait is printed on Chilean bank notes. Below his statue you see the ethernal flame burning.

Monthly blog report and Top Commentators of September 2014

What we feared last month has now happened. We could not publish every day and skipped in total five days. Not being so active and closing our blog for comments from robots has resulted in a drop of hits to about 240.000. We wrote about Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, Spain and Chile. We end our article with the collages of and the list of Top Commentators.
