The world largest collection of van Gogh paintings and drawings, Amsterdam

In the Paulus Potterstraat in Amsterdam, near the concert building, you find the van Gogh Museum. It houses the largest collection of paintings, drawings and letters of van Gogh in the world. A total of 1.400 pieces of art. The museum is always crowded and you are not allowed to take pictures inside. We find this always very annoying but this is a museum you should still visit. We learned a lot about the life of the artist van Gogh, he lived together with his brother Theo, he loved nature, he had a troubled live and committed suicide by shooting himself.

We were not allowed to take pictures in the museum but still had to share some impressions with the readers who are not so familiar with the work of van Gogh. To do this we bought some postcards which we now add to the article. His most famous work is the “Sunflowers”. Van Gogh lived from 1853 till 1890 and is one of the most important Dutch painters. He started painting because he couldn’t find a job and was laid off by the Belgian mine industry. A self developed talent.

  4. He is one of my favourite painters next to Claude Monet...I like a lot the museum in Amsterdam, although its always so crowded in there...a lovely place to enjoy the works of Van Gogh is definitely the Kröller-Müller-Museum, close to the German border, I simply adore the mix of museum in the middle of a park:-)))

  5. What a wonderful idea to do the postcards along with your tour!!! I am very familiar with Van Gogh and know all these paintings. I have read his book of letters to his brother Theo. I think in modern times he might have been diagnosed with schizophrenia, and that his mental problems added to his talent. I get SO upset when these kind of places will not let us take pictures, especially if we are paying. I do know that the flash is not good for some things, but some places won't even let you take pictures without a flash. I will not even go to these place, I think it is very unfair. Have you heard the song Starry Night by Don McLean? It is beautiful and about Van Gogh's talent.

  16. Cityscape seems a good subject for murals. But many themes can of course be painted there, for decoration and
as a break and escape from looking at cement. This painting by American painter Charles Sheeler, http://EN.WahooArt.com/A55A04/w.nsf/OPRA/BRUE-
    8DP5GS
, would make a good mural as it is as a good painting. The image can be seen as wahooart.com who supplies
    canvas prints from original art.
