How is it to fly in the Airbus A-380?

We have been planning this for more than half a year, a flight with the A-380 from Frankfurt to Miami and finally it has materialised. Kristel is not such a big fan of flying so for her it was rather stressful. On the contrary, I love flying and was looking forward to fly in the largest passenger plane of the world.

There were in fact two gates for one plane. Gate 54 was for the upper deck and gate 56 for the lower deck of the Lufthansa A-380 double decker. It almost sounds like a London bus but it is a huge aircraft. Just look at the person standing next to one of the engines. The 1st A-380 was introduced in October 2007, so all planes are brand new. The standard A-380 version has room for 525 passengers. The Lufthansa upper deck is completely reserved for First Class and Business Class passengers. The lower deck for Economy Class passenger.

The excitement and the stress increases as we start boarding. I quickly take a picture of Kristel in her seat and buckle up. We get our first drinks before take-off. After a while comes an announcement, there is a technical problem with the one of the door sensors and it needs to be replaced. This was resolved in 30 minutes and the A-380 took its position on the runway. We expected that the departure would take as long as the Boeing 747 but we were surprised the A-380 was quickly airborne. We had a smooth flight, the food and drinks were good and the entertainment system excellent. We are very lucky we could fly business class but after a 9,5 hour flight we would welcome some progress in the research and development of supersonic flying. Could it be possible that we will ever experience that?

  3. Oh my it so reminds me of Meg Ryan in the movie French Kiss and her great fear of flying! The movie begins while she's taking a class to over come her fear, and it's the funniest thing ever! My what an amazing goose of a plane that is flying over head. It's going to land in our Miami right here in America! So awesome. Now I can hardly wait to see what wonderful photos you'll take on your visit! Enjoy you two!

  10. Must have been a great experience, right? We have seen the A380 only at the airport tour at Frankfurt.
    Have a nice week.

  11. It is a nice plane. Our daughter and SIL flew from London to Sydney in one. Poor Kristel, nothing worse than a fear of flying. I used to be like that when I was young but now its nothing. After flying in PNG nothing scares me anymore. Bring on supersonic travel or teleporting so that we can visit family in USA faster than 13 hours and Europe in 24 hours.

    Thanks for sharing!

  14. Wow what a huge plane! Bet it was a great flight. I have never been on this kind of plane, but when they get this large, the idea of flight dynamics sort of loses its meaning. hope your trip to Miami is all awesome!
